Final Fantasy XIII’s development process appears not have been quite as thorough as might be hoped – a rather severe bug has been uncovered:
For a highly linear console game developed by a team of several hundred it seems rather curious that such a bug should survive the testing process; just how hard it is to reproduce is not clear however.

If you dont know how to reproduce it, then you cant blame any sort of gameplay or team yet...
This looks like a symptom of the console overheating. Same thing often happens on PC's when the graphics card is overheating.
It looks like Sazh is shooting a music video...
"just how hard it is to reproduce is not clear however."
Right, for everyone saying this is unacceptable, remember that bit. Final Fantasy XIII has sold over 1.5 million copies. Which probably means it has 1.5 million people playing it.
If this is a bug that has been found by about a few dozen people, then it is a nothing bug. I encountered something similar in Uncharted 2, AND I had it freeze on me. But so what? As long as it isn't consistently game breaking, sometimes these things sneak through. On occasions, QA misses something.
I agree, if anyone can encounter this bug just by running along the wall in one of the levels, then that is poor. If, however you have to put a character in a certain position and then jump on them with another character and whilst mid-air accessing the menu and equipping a certain item or something stupid, then you can't blame QA for missing it. In CoD4 doing something like that could allow you to jump outside the map. MW2 had the Javelin glitch. It happens.
Why does artefact throw the word 'linear' around like its an insult, nothing wrong with linear, infact I prefer linear rpgs to open ended 'where the fuck am I supposed to go now' rpgs.
This kinda happens in those kind of sandbox-style games like GTA. You fall through something and you're in it. My friend calls it the area of warped shit
This isn't a bug, this is just what happens when you consume too many drugs
why is it that there is always shitty text flying everywhere in japanese streams ? O.o
it's maddening
That's the comment system that niconico video uses.
wooh~ feels like I've been eating one too many brownies~~~
This whole article is rubbish. It's easy to see that this footage was taken by a SquaerEnix testing officer. Thje player is deliberately manipulating the glitch by panning and scaling. Anyone who has seen the debug mode for FF7 will understand this. It;s the testing officers job to look for things like this so that they don't make it to the final release of a game.
Debug modes (like the afore mentioned ff7 debug) are usually the result of strenuous testing such as this, chich is where game cheats come from.
Only a graphics glitch, it's not severe at all. At max a Class B bug. It doesn't make it impossible to finish the game, actually I suppose going into the menu fixes this.
haha classic hall of mirrors effect.. seriously amateur stuff.. square enix pull the finger out.
I don't see what the big deal is. Sure, it's a MINOR problem, but if anyone manages to get outside the regular map like that, they are obviously either trying to do it themselves, or extremelly unlucky.
It's also known as the 'hall of mirrors', it happens when the game engine has nothing to render, and therefore tries to render infinity. It happens in almost every game because thats how game engines work. Something most likely forced him out of the map/bad collision zone, similar to how sometimes you would just fall through the floor in the older GTA games. Anyone who has ever used the Unreal editor or Source will know what it is.
Thats what happens when you run it on PS3
Wow... Good thing the 360 owners get to benefit from the PS3 beta testing of this game... They oiught to have that fixed by the time it hits the States...
BLACK MAN IN SPPPPAAAAACCCCEEE....
That why it took so long to bring them back to Final Fantasy
I blame it on the chinese.
Anons 1,2, and 4 are correct. Falling out of a map (where there are no textures) will cause you to see endlessly into the skybox, without anything to overlay or go against; every frame that is rendered is not dropped producing that "sticky-mirror" effect. This is common in all games, therefore is not a "glitch" or "bug".
LOL. Looks like Sazh, Lightning and Vanille have just discovered their hidden 2D fighting powers.

cool
I've wanted FFXIII for a really long time, but I'm glad Artefact let us know about this bug so I won't waste my money on this piece of shit.
Omfg... it's just one glitch I mean all games have a dang glitch in it or two. And before japan actually gives us the copies of it they go into the game and fix the glitches.
UNLIMITED CARACHTERS WORK
I blame X360 development.....
why does sankaku hate ff13 so much?
Because it gets more hits, and more hits mean more money.
Lol trippin' game trips, haha.
I'm just glad PS3 and Xbox360 are patchable. Imagine this kind of "failure" in a Wii game. Waiting forever to be fixed.
I am willing to bet that there is no wasting of resources going on. The player just fell through the world geometry, or it isn't being drawn for some reason.
Since nothing is being drawn below the skybox and characters, the pixels that had nothing drawn to them on the current frame will keep the color from last frame.
They can write a color to the entire color buffer before drawing so you won't see the leftovers from last frame, but it's a waste to write a color to the entire color buffer, because you are supposed to have the ground and sky drawn over it anyways. This is why any good game should have this bug if you can get outside the level when you were not supposed to be able to.
Finally someone who knows what is happening -_- a missing texture won't cause this, missing geometry however will.
Man i love sankaku, but all these posts trolling about ffxiii are getting on my nerves. God forbid there be a missing texture anywhere in the game! Honestly I've barely played a single game this generation without at least one bug like this, this isn't really newsworthy.
well said.
Maybe such things are expected in other games, but not in a final fantasy. SE really shouldn't be dropping the ball with their number one ip, ever.
"To make a big deal out of this one while ignoring others that genuinely affect gameplay"
"RE5, DMC4, and Uncharted 2"
We don't normally cover these games so why would you expect us to cover their bugs? On the other hand we do cover the likes of FF rather frequently, so why wouldn't we cover a bug?
Well, to give an example, there is the blue hell in GTA4 right? And Assassin's Creed II freezes if you double assassinate too many times in a row. I've had RE5, DMC4, and Uncharted 2 freeze once or twice, and even had Modern Warfare 2 crash a few times. The point is no matter how important the IP is, these things are always slipping through the cracks in this generation.
To make a big deal out of this one while ignoring others that genuinely affect gameplay (like some of the freezing glitches in the games I mentioned) is showing an anti-ffxiii bias. That's all fine and good, this isn't a respectable news source or anything so it's not required to be unbiased per se, but I'm just getting annoyed by it. Or, sankaku could just be trolling, in which case I'm even more annoyed.
yeah it doesnt matter how important the ip is , theyll be buggy however we are allowed to comment on said bugs, i dont know why ff freaks think we are not allowed to comment on the quality of a ff game, and if we do suddenly we are trolling
cept the funny thing is 90% of the trolling is from people with no idea if any ball has even been dropped.
they're just a bunch of parrots.
"i know it sucks because its linear!"
all (well, most) of you know squat. i'm pretty sure you've all played dozens of games as linear or more so than FFXIII (and yes i've actually played it) and liked them just fine. you people are ONLY whining because "linear" and "Final Fantasy" are together.
"thats enough!"
no, it really isn't. because just as linearity works just fine in other games, most of you trolls HAVE NO IDEA if it works for FFXIII cause you haven't actually played it, you've just been performing your best parrot routines.
Final Bugstasy XIII
HAHAAHAHAHAHA!
I hope that was a sarcastic laugh
boohoo! dont walk outside the map then! *plays dragon age and does the infinite stat points cheat and also the leveling cheat* oh no! a bug! what a bad game!!!! *continues playing*
Square Enix you fail do something diferent
anon you fail do something different
look´s you fall off the map
gpu is dying, next...
Yeah, that's what I was thinking. It could be a bug, but if nobody else can reproduce it, the fault is more likely to be with the console it's running on.
It's not a bug.
Almost any game has this effect, it's unavoidable. Surfaces with no texture will "reflect" what's in front of it. If it's your character, and you move the camera, it'll cause a line of overlapping reflections.
I once downloaded a Silent Hill map for Garry's Mod and forgot to put the skybox texture in the right folder, causing this effect on a MASSIVE level. Again, it's really unavoidable and the best developers can do is hope their players don't find ways out of the maps and in to these areas.

Because you didn't but the texture in the right folder made it a bug, it's a bug because it wasn't not the intended result. If they got out of the map it is a bug that shouldn't have happened.
