Final Fantasy XIII’s development process appears not have been quite as thorough as might be hoped – a rather severe bug has been uncovered:
For a highly linear console game developed by a team of several hundred it seems rather curious that such a bug should survive the testing process; just how hard it is to reproduce is not clear however.

This ain't a bug, watch the video again.
Black men are always high.
From my experience in games, it's actually an unfinished texture.
Not really a bug or glitch.
It's known as "the void" in games. It's when there are no textures to be drawn in that area, like a skybox or otherwise. And so anything that is drawn on to it in a frame, like the foreground characters and such, appears to stay there because nothing else is drawn over it.
This phenomenon itself is not the bug, but the fact that the player was able to reach such an area, or that something in the game went wrong that exposed the void to the player's view.
Yea its not really a bug. But thats practically inexcusable >.> I mean gah. How does something like that slip through with all the time put into that?
In the Daggerfall era, the fabled "Void" was actually useful, that's why no one ever claimed it was a bug.
mmm, it's like when you jump/fall out of a map in source
Still knowing the couse it doesn't solve the problem. Something needs to be done.
to get to the void something needs to be done, so the solution here is to not do anything.
lold.. coz i was high, coz i was high.. la la la la la la
i used to go to school before i got high...
Did Someone Divided 0?
racist....please die
Who, me high? I'm never high. (b~_^)b
Anyway, it's quite the interesting type of bug, almost liek a music vid Jimmie Hendrix would've put together. "The Void" isn't the easiest bug to find or reproduce. Lucky stiff.
Well that was weird.
This glitch deserves to have its RPG.
^have it's own RPG.
Edit button is pretty useful you know
I don't know if Anons can edit. I'm thinking not, otherwise all the Anons would be editing each others comments... witch could actually get interesting.
It's not even "it's own RPG". Its own RPG is the way to do it. Never apostrophe "its" when implying ownership. 'It's' means 'It has'.
'It is."
'It is.
'It is.'
This glitch deserves to have its own RPG.
man you fail hard
It seems it would make for a better story than XIII's very own, though...
the slaps to the face continue...
This seems like the kind of bug that would happen in an MMORPG.
Oh and happy new year, everyone.

Sorry couldn't help myself.
If that was for the PS3 version, I'm fearful for the 360 version O.o
He got out of the map. That type of bug almost always happens outside maps. It's not even hard to do in most games.
Is this an isolated case or is it happening to a number of players?
Yeah, not a bug at all.
Commonly known as a Hall of Mirrors effect.
It happens when you walk out of an area and it has no textures, no surfaces, nothing. If you spend too much time in the hall of mirror area, the game can even lock up from a lack of ressources...well, that was my experience from when I was modding UT3.
Obviously, you have no idea what a bug really is. The fact that the player was able to walk out of the map is a bug in the game itself.
Noooo, the actual arrival into that area is a bug yes.
However what's depicted here isn't, it's totally normal and can happen IN ANY GAME if you manage to out of bounds.
So yeah, stop putting your foot into your mouth. If the guy actually showed which collision area flubbed up, then you can call that a bug since yeah, managing to get out of bounds is indeed considered one. The out of bounds area isn't.
How did he get there indeed...
From the videos I've seen. All you can do is: Walk/Run. Jump using designated action points.
So.... how the hell did he/she walk/run out of a textured area or used a pre-designated action-jump to jump out?
Propably jumped against each corner he could find, and finally found one that let him through..
This guys right
Just because you identify some of its characteristics and give it a name doesn't mean it's not a bug.
What you have is a bug with known characteristics and a name.
Don't be a douche, Anon. There are plenty of successful games, with WAY worse bugs than this common occurrence when you leave the playing area. As if it won't get patched soon after release, if not before the US? Pfft, there are too many mindless saps willing to make a big deal out of the smallest negative information on anything.
The visual artifacts aren't a bug. That's like saying it's a bug if the game crashes when you try to attack after having somehow equipped a potion as a weapon. You got there because of a bug, sure, but why would go out of there way to make sure situations that aren't supposed to happen are handled anyway? That would be like putting an extra set of wheels and a driveshaft on the roof of a car.
> That would be like putting an extra set of wheels and a driveshaft on the roof of a car.
hmmm... brilliant!
For my experience in games, it means stupid quality control
It's not a bug.
Almost any game has this effect, it's unavoidable. Surfaces with no texture will "reflect" what's in front of it. If it's your character, and you move the camera, it'll cause a line of overlapping reflections.
I once downloaded a Silent Hill map for Garry's Mod and forgot to put the skybox texture in the right folder, causing this effect on a MASSIVE level. Again, it's really unavoidable and the best developers can do is hope their players don't find ways out of the maps and in to these areas.

Because you didn't but the texture in the right folder made it a bug, it's a bug because it wasn't not the intended result. If they got out of the map it is a bug that shouldn't have happened.

HAHAAHAHAHAHA!
I hope that was a sarcastic laugh
Man i love sankaku, but all these posts trolling about ffxiii are getting on my nerves. God forbid there be a missing texture anywhere in the game! Honestly I've barely played a single game this generation without at least one bug like this, this isn't really newsworthy.
well said.
Maybe such things are expected in other games, but not in a final fantasy. SE really shouldn't be dropping the ball with their number one ip, ever.
Well, to give an example, there is the blue hell in GTA4 right? And Assassin's Creed II freezes if you double assassinate too many times in a row. I've had RE5, DMC4, and Uncharted 2 freeze once or twice, and even had Modern Warfare 2 crash a few times. The point is no matter how important the IP is, these things are always slipping through the cracks in this generation.
To make a big deal out of this one while ignoring others that genuinely affect gameplay (like some of the freezing glitches in the games I mentioned) is showing an anti-ffxiii bias. That's all fine and good, this isn't a respectable news source or anything so it's not required to be unbiased per se, but I'm just getting annoyed by it. Or, sankaku could just be trolling, in which case I'm even more annoyed.
yeah it doesnt matter how important the ip is , theyll be buggy however we are allowed to comment on said bugs, i dont know why ff freaks think we are not allowed to comment on the quality of a ff game, and if we do suddenly we are trolling
"To make a big deal out of this one while ignoring others that genuinely affect gameplay"
"RE5, DMC4, and Uncharted 2"
We don't normally cover these games so why would you expect us to cover their bugs? On the other hand we do cover the likes of FF rather frequently, so why wouldn't we cover a bug?
cept the funny thing is 90% of the trolling is from people with no idea if any ball has even been dropped.
they're just a bunch of parrots.
"i know it sucks because its linear!"
all (well, most) of you know squat. i'm pretty sure you've all played dozens of games as linear or more so than FFXIII (and yes i've actually played it) and liked them just fine. you people are ONLY whining because "linear" and "Final Fantasy" are together.
"thats enough!"
no, it really isn't. because just as linearity works just fine in other games, most of you trolls HAVE NO IDEA if it works for FFXIII cause you haven't actually played it, you've just been performing your best parrot routines.
