“I heard most japanese people are an atheist. But why is crime in Japan lower than in many Christian countries?

why are they well-mannered?”

The problem of atheist crime and Christian moral perfection is certainly a vexing one.

The illiterate and pathetically ignorant drivel posted on Yahoo! Answers in response to this question is hardly worth reproducing here, but 2ch’s response is as edifying as ever:

“Wrong: Atheists.

Right: Polytheists.”

“Because the eyes of other people are more scary than those of God.”

“The Sun watches down on us so we can do no wrong.”

“Because we don’t have any religious wars.”

“Isn’t it because religion itself breeds violence?”

“We’re not really atheists though. And what’s called an atheist overseas is practically a cultist, like some kind of atheist religion.”

“You can’t watch late night anime in prison. That makes for a polite society.”

“Piety destroys character.”

“It must be genetic. Just look at those damn Koreans!”

“Because we’re Japanese.”

“Religion serves as an expedient means of making the uncultivated or ignorant obey the law.”

“Because you can only believe in yourself.”

“’They’re clever because they eat lots of fish.’

I don’t think Japanese are smart, but I do think the person who wrote this is an idiot.”

“As expected of someone from a place where they don’t each much fish, he’s pretty stupid.”

“If you compare them to America, the crime rates in most countries are just a joke.”

“Not revering a single god doesn’t give rise to useless prejudice.”

“Religion is a weapon of mass destruction.”

“You can do whatever you like if God forgives you.”

“We aren’t without religion.

December is Christmas.

The New Year is Shinto.

The funeral is Buddhist.

The marriage is Christian.

There’s no more faithful people!”

“It’s almost like you can’t have morals, happiness or love without religion to them. Their culture has been hijacked, hasn’t it?”

“’It’s because they are 98% one people.’

This is a big factor – mixing in different cultures and religions causes public order to deteriorate.”

“The reason is because sex is completely tolerated.”

“Society is a harsher master than any God. The punishments actually happen after all.”

“Crime may be rare and manners good, but it is stifling here.”

“Look at the troubles after the war or in the Showa period, and the crime rates then. Japanese society is currently stable, that’s why crime is low. Individualism vs collectivism or whatever are just secondary factors.”

“Overseas, atheists get suspected of communism. In Japan, it’s the Catholic priests and the Buddhist monks who are the communists.”

“Japanese only believe in capitalists and men of power.”

“I’d like to ask those American fellows the opposite – just why is it the religious folk are the ones with the worst manners and the highest levels of crime?”

“In the US, there’s one god for 300 million people.

In Japan, there’s 8 million gods, that’s 1 to 15. Plenty for everyone.”

“Let’s just put it down to bushido.”

    It's really rather simple.

Christianity is very convenient. Rather than being something like a big brother watching you to make sure you do what you're supposed to christianity is more like a drinking buddy watching your back, and always making sure you never get in trouble.

Rape a woman? Just reaffirm your belief in jesus as your "saviour" and you ticket to heaven is stamped again.

It shouldn't come as surprising, though. What interest would anyone really have in belonging to a religion that makes you actually behave in a manner besides the one you feel like behaving in at that very moment?

Buddy jesus has got your back.

    uh huh.. more like

west- you got 1 chance, haven or hell after death
east - you reincarnate till you got nirvana, after that you`re always happy and don`t give a fkuc.

it`s pretty much the same, but west`s religions are like "om nom nom believe in us or burn bithc. dont ask or you wont get virgins from allah." and east is more like "got any doubts? awwright, go ask someone, find answer, you dont have to believe without proves."

Buddhism is only a minor religion in Japan and the major religion is Shinto but even that is pretty minor since most people in Japan don't take part in the religion except on holidays and that is because of tradition rather then the religion.

They say they are Christian by default because it's the norm, but really they have probably never read a word of the bible let alone follow it... But there are no requirements to SAY and CLAIM your a Christian so... there really isn't much anyone can do...

It has been said, "Religion can make an evil person do good. But only religion can make a good person do evil."

The problem is faith and all of the things it brings with it. With faith, there is always an excuse, a way out, something to make you feel good, even if what you're doing is terrible. As long as you feel a certain way or do a certain thing, you'll still get the pie in the sky when you die. You don't have to deal with the reality of the situation when your head is in heaven. You don't have to deal with people when you can simply label them sinners and leave them in the care of your imaginary friend in the sky.

It seems the answer to the original question is education. Compare it a different way - what is the one key demographic that is the best indicator of the presence of faith in an individual or group? Education. In the same way, what is an important (perhaps not the best) indicator of crime rate for an individual or group? Education. And what is one thing that tends to be worse in more religious nations than more secular nations? Education. Japan has rigorous education and has lower crime rate (and lower religiosity). Same with Germany, England, the Scandinavian countries, etc. Conversely, more theocratic nations have significantly worse education and crime rates. It's because religion fears education, because education breeds critical thought, the enemy of faith. Look at what's taught in religious schools and you'll see exactly what I mean.

The sad thing is, that many people who are "zealous" Christians are way worse than the "I'm Christian but don't give a damn"-type that's prevalent. Especially when following a moral code that actually makes sense.

    @thanto_

The thing is... religion isn't making anyone do ANYTHING. It's PEOPLE. They are doing it themselves or other people are manipulating them into doing it. PEOPLE are the ones responsible for twisting religious texts out of context and then other PEOPLE are responsible for following their obvious lies... How can a religion that says to love yourself and your enemies and to not judge people be responsible for so much hate? The reason is PEOPLE don't want to do that, so they make stuff up and other PEOPLE don't want to do it either, so they follow them... Religion isn't responsible for hate PEOPLE are...

I once heard a story, a boy who said if you lie and don't ask forgiveness you go to hell... The Christians around him threw paper balls at him. Why throw paper balls at someone when he is quoting the bible? It's because they don't want to hear the truth, they don't want to hear that they commit blasphemy everyday... so they just ignore it, and persecute him for telling the truth... Does the bible make them lie? No it discourages lying... THEY ARE THE 1S LYING, AND IT'S NO ONES FAULT BUT THEIR OWN!

Your right though... if PEOPLE acted educated and smart they would know the ones doing bad things in the name of religion don't represent the religion itself.

    Comment by Anonymous
    09:26 30/12/2009 # ! Neutral (0)

That is not Christianity. A true christian who believe Jesus Christ died for their sins don't go out and think oh i can sin and just ask for forgiveness.

The simple fact is children aren't taught any morals so they grow up and do whatever come into their head. Without morals there is nothing to stop them from doing what feels good and children can get away with it a lot of times without anyone knowing. Their have been many stories on sankaku of that very thing.

The reason Japanese has low crime rate is long and complicated but if you understood the society to a certain extent you would find that it is the way there society is simple as that. With everybody taking a place of humbleness there is little to get angry about etc etc for every subject not covered

I could go into great length about this subject but it takes to long to type it all up

I can't give you any statistics, or facts or evidence but hurry, vote away even more of your liberties and privacies so we can keep you forever safe from PHANTOM CRIME."

Reminds me of the craze in America in the 80's for convicting "satanic day care centres" where dozens of people went to jail all over the country after psychologists used "repressed memories" to convince people they'd been abused. Every single conviction was overturned and the whole craze was just national idiocy.
