“Why is Crime in Japan Lower Than in Christian Countries?”

“I heard most japanese people are an atheist. But why is crime in Japan lower than in many Christian countries?
why are they well-mannered?”
The problem of atheist crime and Christian moral perfection is certainly a vexing one.
The illiterate and pathetically ignorant drivel posted on Yahoo! Answers in response to this question is hardly worth reproducing here, but 2ch’s response is as edifying as ever:
“Wrong: Atheists.
Right: Polytheists.”
“Because the eyes of other people are more scary than those of God.”
“The Sun watches down on us so we can do no wrong.”
“Because we don’t have any religious wars.”
“Isn’t it because religion itself breeds violence?”
“We’re not really atheists though. And what’s called an atheist overseas is practically a cultist, like some kind of atheist religion.”
“You can’t watch late night anime in prison. That makes for a polite society.”
“Piety destroys character.”
“It must be genetic. Just look at those damn Koreans!”
“Because we’re Japanese.”
“Religion serves as an expedient means of making the uncultivated or ignorant obey the law.”
“Because you can only believe in yourself.”
“’They’re clever because they eat lots of fish.’
I don’t think Japanese are smart, but I do think the person who wrote this is an idiot.”
“As expected of someone from a place where they don’t each much fish, he’s pretty stupid.”
“If you compare them to America, the crime rates in most countries are just a joke.”
“Not revering a single god doesn’t give rise to useless prejudice.”
“Religion is a weapon of mass destruction.”
“You can do whatever you like if God forgives you.”
“We aren’t without religion.
December is Christmas.
The New Year is Shinto.
The funeral is Buddhist.
The marriage is Christian.
There’s no more faithful people!”
“It’s almost like you can’t have morals, happiness or love without religion to them. Their culture has been hijacked, hasn’t it?”
“’It’s because they are 98% one people.’
This is a big factor – mixing in different cultures and religions causes public order to deteriorate.”
“The reason is because sex is completely tolerated.”
“Society is a harsher master than any God. The punishments actually happen after all.”
“Crime may be rare and manners good, but it is stifling here.”
“Look at the troubles after the war or in the Showa period, and the crime rates then. Japanese society is currently stable, that’s why crime is low. Individualism vs collectivism or whatever are just secondary factors.”
“Overseas, atheists get suspected of communism. In Japan, it’s the Catholic priests and the Buddhist monks who are the communists.”
“Japanese only believe in capitalists and men of power.”
“I’d like to ask those American fellows the opposite – just why is it the religious folk are the ones with the worst manners and the highest levels of crime?”
“In the US, there’s one god for 300 million people.
In Japan, there’s 8 million gods, that’s 1 to 15. Plenty for everyone.”
“Let’s just put it down to bushido.”

Religion as a salad bar isn't such a bad thing.
It's really rather simple.
Christianity is very convenient. Rather than being something like a big brother watching you to make sure you do what you're supposed to christianity is more like a drinking buddy watching your back, and always making sure you never get in trouble.
Rape a woman? Just reaffirm your belief in jesus as your "saviour" and you ticket to heaven is stamped again.
It shouldn't come as surprising, though. What interest would anyone really have in belonging to a religion that makes you actually behave in a manner besides the one you feel like behaving in at that very moment?
Buddy jesus has got your back.
west - live once
east - nirvana/reincarnation etc
Christians believe Jesus will return to Earth and bring the dead to life... that's not living once in some peoples book...
uh huh.. more like
west- you got 1 chance, haven or hell after death
east - you reincarnate till you got nirvana, after that you`re always happy and don`t give a fkuc.
it`s pretty much the same, but west`s religions are like "om nom nom believe in us or burn bithc. dont ask or you wont get virgins from allah." and east is more like "got any doubts? awwright, go ask someone, find answer, you dont have to believe without proves."
Err... it's because they're Japanese?
Because they believe in Buddhism which is not a god but a way of life?
Because they're humble and helpful people?
Because in Japan, firearms aren't commercialized?
Because "God" works in mysterious ways?
Where is the middle?
You know that Japan is east AND west of the US, depending on which way you go.
Anime, manga and the asian chicks. You don't get either of those in jail do you?
Buddhism is only a minor religion in Japan and the major religion is Shinto but even that is pretty minor since most people in Japan don't take part in the religion except on holidays and that is because of tradition rather then the religion.
you're still young you won't understand
make us understand then
For "atheists" they seem to enjoy believing in a lot of spirituality nonsense. It may not be religion, but it's still ridiculous.
I'd like to know where you get your info from 11:15 Anon. Most "atheists" aren't spiritual either.
I can't think of anything supernatural that I base my life around. Try again Anon 11:15.
He was probably referring to the Japanese people commenting in the article.
i got friend went japan with, he Christian but can't visit temple and shrines. Whatsup with that? I am not religious in any way but that mentality is pretty wrong, don't you think so?
see Buddha, look away, see temple, afraid and distance away. Is that how Christianity is taught?
It must be nice thinking you know everything.
@ anon 04:54
East and West is relative to the UK, not the US.
YOU ARE ALL BEYOND HOPE. YOU HOLD OPINIONS ON SUBJECTS YOU HAVE NO KNOWLEDGE ON.
@Chris
"Atheists" was in quotes precisely because actual atheists wouldn't believe in the spiritual nonsense that the Japanese people tend to, despite making the claim that they are atheists.
don't look at the crime rate, look at the suicide rate LOL
..........
religion is a weapon of mass destruction, ftw!!!!!
............
the crime in Japan is lower than other countries because they respect the religion, opinions and points of view of the other people, the usa people is close minded they hate each other because of the skin color, religion and the appearance
amen sankaku brother. preach it to the heavens where all shall hear and repent of their evil ways so We can all start fappin to the lolis of the most high japan!
In actuality its just because most of the people that claim to be Christian are just assholes. They say they are Christian by default because it's the norm, but really they have probably never read a word of the bible let alone follow it... But there are no requirements to SAY and CLAIM your a Christian so... there really isn't much anyone can do...
The REAL Christians are the 1s running food shelters and joining the salvation army (or living nice peaceful lives)... the others are just the retards rocking the boat...
People who are products of Jesuit education are most especially the retards rocking the boat.
Don't forget the ones who go around the world trying to "save people's souls" by guilt-tripping them into believing a work of fiction.
You don't need to be deluded to be charitable...
It has been said, "Religion can make an evil person do good. But only religion can make a good person do evil."
The problem is faith and all of the things it brings with it. With faith, there is always an excuse, a way out, something to make you feel good, even if what you're doing is terrible. As long as you feel a certain way or do a certain thing, you'll still get the pie in the sky when you die. You don't have to deal with the reality of the situation when your head is in heaven. You don't have to deal with people when you can simply label them sinners and leave them in the care of your imaginary friend in the sky.
It seems the answer to the original question is education. Compare it a different way - what is the one key demographic that is the best indicator of the presence of faith in an individual or group? Education. In the same way, what is an important (perhaps not the best) indicator of crime rate for an individual or group? Education. And what is one thing that tends to be worse in more religious nations than more secular nations? Education. Japan has rigorous education and has lower crime rate (and lower religiosity). Same with Germany, England, the Scandinavian countries, etc. Conversely, more theocratic nations have significantly worse education and crime rates. It's because religion fears education, because education breeds critical thought, the enemy of faith. Look at what's taught in religious schools and you'll see exactly what I mean.
The sad thing is, that many people who are "zealous" Christians are way worse than the "I'm Christian but don't give a damn"-type that's prevalent. Especially when following a moral code that actually makes sense.
oh yeah, there's this retard in you-tube doing that, I ignored him cuz he just wouldn't listen to reason. he kept saying my religion was wrong, dammit.
@thanto_
The thing is... religion isn't making anyone do ANYTHING. It's PEOPLE. They are doing it themselves or other people are manipulating them into doing it. PEOPLE are the ones responsible for twisting religious texts out of context and then other PEOPLE are responsible for following their obvious lies... How can a religion that says to love yourself and your enemies and to not judge people be responsible for so much hate? The reason is PEOPLE don't want to do that, so they make stuff up and other PEOPLE don't want to do it either, so they follow them... Religion isn't responsible for hate PEOPLE are...
I once heard a story, a boy who said if you lie and don't ask forgiveness you go to hell... The Christians around him threw paper balls at him. Why throw paper balls at someone when he is quoting the bible? It's because they don't want to hear the truth, they don't want to hear that they commit blasphemy everyday... so they just ignore it, and persecute him for telling the truth... Does the bible make them lie? No it discourages lying... THEY ARE THE 1S LYING, AND IT'S NO ONES FAULT BUT THEIR OWN!
Your right though... if PEOPLE acted educated and smart they would know the ones doing bad things in the name of religion don't represent the religion itself.
That is not Christianity. A true christian who believe Jesus Christ died for their sins don't go out and think oh i can sin and just ask for forgiveness.
The simple fact is children aren't taught any morals so they grow up and do whatever come into their head. Without morals there is nothing to stop them from doing what feels good and children can get away with it a lot of times without anyone knowing. Their have been many stories on sankaku of that very thing.
The reason Japanese has low crime rate is long and complicated but if you understood the society to a certain extent you would find that it is the way there society is simple as that. With everybody taking a place of humbleness there is little to get angry about etc etc for every subject not covered
I could go into great length about this subject but it takes to long to type it all up
Kids aren't taught what is right and wrong. Morals are a whole other thing, mostly BS laws reared from religious zealots.
@09:26~ever notice that most of the kids that are screwed up and end up on here for doing screwed up things are from the U.S. and are most likely from christian homes? stick that in yer pipe and smoke it, asswipe!
>implying morals and 'right and wrong' are separate concepts
@15:51
if you lived here in the united states you would know that the media loves to blow religious crimes out of perspective and that more crimes happen in non religious families then those that live in religious homes. you are just one of the ignorant masses that make this ha horrible planet to live on
people who are taught morals also learn a sense of right and wrong. morals is just another way of saying right and wrong.
Low crime rate in Japan is nothing to do with religion, moral, education. People think its embarrasing, not cool(kakkowarui) to commit crime. Whole relatives and friends are looked down and it means dead.
your a idoit its not like that
your a idoit
hahahahaha
You're BOTH idiots.
Ha ha. -_-;;
I know that you hear of some crazy stuff in the America's but just from what I've read on this site about crimes in Japan all I gotta say is HOLY SHIT I thought America was bad but this is stupid. Granted I do have profound respect for the Japanese and there culture and all those crimes could be just the bad eggs of the millions of citizens there but just 'WOW' at some of the shit they get away with. Surprised there isn't more vigilante justice over there.
that is the sort of 'christianity' the mass media and organized state peddles to the people for its own gain.
there are very few true christians in this world and most who claim to be one, know they dont really understand the religion. This is the same with all religions.
It's simple, we were educated like to be so.....The first and most important lesson for all Japanese elementally school kids is "Don't annoy other people" 2nd lesson is "Don't disturb the order, Just do like others are doing" we were not taught any religious manners but all Japanese kids are pounded these 2 big rules into their head over and over every day
as rascist as this sounds its because japan has an exceedingly low immagration rate unlike the US, smolians cause alot of problems <.<
Are you for real!? Japan HAS immigrants! You just don't see them displayed ANYWHERE!
Many religions make for a more tolerant society. That simple.
Whereas America! with it's one MAIN religion(christianity) and it's many versions make a shit hole and a breeding place for hate crime and confused children.
Religion = good-for-nothing, but war!
Nooo War= people who cant mind their own religion and have to push their own ideals on to others.
war = a fight for resources/land
Science = creates the tools for war.
And science isn't inherently religious, is it? So it could be considered the "religion" of the non-religious.
Science is pretty much the polar opposite to religion.
Then knowing that the Pontifical Academy of Sciences under the Roman Catholic Church exists must blow your mind then.
Science is a religion
science is everything, and you know its there.
god... he could be taking a shit and you´d never know it.
@04:43
There are also YEC supporters who claim to be scientists and that earth is 6000 years old because.... um god made it. It says so in a really old book that was rewritten so many times that nobody has a fucking clue what it looked like when first written.
@04:59
Religion is belief in the supernatural. Science is belief in the rational. If you can't difference between the two, then you've clearly had too much science education. And probably too much religious brainwa... *cough* education.
"Science = creates the tools for war.
And science isn't inherently religious, is it? So it could be considered the "religion" of the non-religious."
Looks like someone has never heard of the fact that machines have no moral conscience. Science doesn't create a moral framework for life in the same manner as religions do.
You're a dumbass, you know that?
religion= force people with science to create tools of war
Science doesn't kill. People do.
Biology created cures for the worst diseases.
Mathematics allows us to casually talk like this from across the world.
Chemistry made the industrial revolution and mass production possible.
Physics taught us to move faster than horses would allow us.
Medicine, computers, aviation, combustion, plastics, electricity, agriculture, robotics...
How many lives has your precious religion saved?
over 9 thousands?
Something can be rational without being true. Something can be rational without being likely.
Some religions are rational. Whether they are true is a separate issue.
"How many lives has your precious religion saved?"
I'm in Australia, and we recently got a saint declared or whatever. Her miracles? Apparently her prayers cured cancer. And then the church was like "well of course prayers can cure cancer!". Sigh...
...only for 10 payments of $39.95, or pay now and buy one get one free!
first off science has killed a ton of people
without science we wouldn't had swords to kill with or guns OR chemical weapons OR nuclear bombs.
not to mention science is also responsible for the mutation of any number of infections and virus
it has done more harm then it has done good.
by comparison religion has only been used by extremist to kill people
AND extremist religions used science to do it
If you saw some christian actually heal someone miraculously you wouldn't believe it because its got to be some sort of trick
mass production made it possible to inflict death on a larger scale then ever they made tanks and bombers on assembly lines they mass produced death in fact I would say death is all humans want to produce no "religion" will ever change that and we will all wipe each other out with our mass produced death bombs....
so I'm just goin to fap tell i die
without science we wouldn't had swords to kill with or
FU FU FU
Swords were made during the time science didn't yet exist.
Big sticks were found whenever someone found a reason to bash another one's head in.
Weapons have little to do with science and more to THE BURNING RAGGGGGGGGGGGE to KILLLLLLLL.
Imma take away yer science and science-post yer overpriced computer to my house.
Wow. Science is not a belief system (which include both Buddhism and Christianity) but a method of verifying ideas.
I guess you could call "religion" a belief system with beliefs (ideas) that don't change.
Also, what someone said above about humility made a lot of sense. Americans (me too) are NOT taught to be humble, our society seems to idolize pride, whether glamorous or notorious. Our media treats criminals the same way as they would treat heroes. Just a thought.
I don't really think religion is the reason their crime rates are so abnormally low, i think it's because cops in japan are more worried about the police's image than actually catching criminals.
Why is crime lower in Japan that other countries? Because it's full of Japanese people.
Why do people smile at you when you smile first in Thailand? Because it's full of Thai people.
Why do people talk with their hands all the time in Italy? Because it's full of Italians.
It's more of a cultural thing than a strictly religious issue IMO.
Why are people fat in the United States of America?
Because it is full of states! No... Wait, what?
from what this site has at least pointed out in many different articles, most japanese are very unwilling to report crimes done to them. They fear public reproach and disgust more than the justice they could receive.
EX: man who raped 50 women or more and still wasnt reported.
This is the truth. For some sad reason nobody in japan likes to report crimes and when they do it's already to late for a lot of things.
lol at the butthurt weaboos downvoting this indisputable truth.
It is surely not the sole reason for the low crime rate, but to deny it has any effect is intellectual dishonesty.
Being honest, surely a lot of crimes are not reported, in all countries. Specially if youre part of a minority.
"Phantom crime" is the cry of communists and paranoiacs. It's also one of feminism's favourite tricks...."I know that the crime statistics say that you're safe but you have to be afraid (and buy lots of products and services that we'll market to you for your security) because there is PHANTOM CRIME running rampant. I can't give you any statistics, or facts or evidence but hurry, vote away even more of your liberties and privacies so we can keep you forever safe from PHANTOM CRIME."
Reminds me of the craze in America in the 80's for convicting "satanic day care centres" where dozens of people went to jail all over the country after psychologists used "repressed memories" to convince people they'd been abused. Every single conviction was overturned and the whole craze was just national idiocy.
Japanese inflict more damage upon themselves then on others.
How about comparing suicide rates?
