Azusa and her moe blob supporting characters appear here time shifted a decade into the past, in classic nineties style.
The nineties restyling of contemporary anime characters has also been taken to even greater extremes – “I Made Mio into a Nineties Character.”
Of course, there are some who might view all this as a substantial improvement on the homogenised moe blobs so common of late…

yui and riko fail! everyone else is pretty gudd!
90's & 80's style was far better and detailed that the shit we have now.
Wait until we built a time machine. But it would be sad for you to have to thank future technology for sending you to the past.
true
Do roughly drawn strokes on the cheeks and inconsistent faces make them equals to detailed? I think and bet not.
If you can appreciate vintage anime: you are a faggot; and a POSER. Any real anime fan can enjoy anime regardless of the year it was made.
I wouldn't mind watching such a 90s-style anime. I just don't want to see still pictures like this.. makes me want to laugh hard
I, for one, welcome my childhood back.
I personally prefer 80s-90s anime style over modern designs but this just doesn't look right IMO. I think the only K-on character that would look good in 90s style would be Sawa-chan.
90's anime was awesome.
but but but this was moe back in the 90s!!!
Looks like 80s not 90s.
yui creeps me out... azusa is fine though
Ritsu Awesome Face
If they were really drawn in a nineties style they would have looked good but that picture looks like crap. They failed at making them into a nineties style drawing.
Now, it's not bad, but it just doesn't feel right.
i don't like very much that style, i'll take the modern style
...Disgusting
I prefer this to the modern moeblob garbage.
Mio looks so... different...
And Ritsu's mouth is so... big...
I lol'd so hard 'coz whoever made this got it. XDDDD
I don't like the actual moeblob, but... DO NOT WANT D= This is horrible, look at their mouths! /=
So, how it should be?
It should be more like Marvel-DC like?
Now they need something like VF-19 custom to act like SOUND FORCE.
That 90th style is very much Macross!!
WTF have they done to Ritsu?!!!
.... she looks more like a Totally Spies character than a 90's anime chick to me..
Soooooooo.....
Wrong.....
*vomit*
my stomach.........those 2 words gave me a dtomach virus
It kinda takes away the Moe
awesome! reminds me of the old Gundam animes :D
I get more of a Gunsmith Cats vibe looking at that image.
Give Azunyan a leather jacket, a CZ-75 airsoft, tuck up her twintails and I bet she could do a convincing Rally Vincent cosplay.
Oh yeah I was thinking of old manga like that but I couldn't put my finger on it! It's kinda interesting how the art techniques have evolved for anime and manga over the years, they started rather similar, but now not so much so.
Admittedly though that was not my first thought. I was INSTANTLY reminded of Outlaw Star when I saw this.
Now that was a cool art style!
Recently, due to Christmas and stuff, I've been reminded of the War in the Pocket OVA. Mainly the ending,... ;_;
a) anime is already plural
b) if gundam is the only 90s anime you think of when you see this, you fail
plus you're surely fat and lonely
a) anime is a loan word, it can be used either way
b) you're an idiot
If it can be used as plural then it's fair to say it's plural. Animes, on the other hand, just sounds fucking retarded.
Also cocks
Now if only the plot could get nineties-fied too....
my only complaint is that she has boobs there
Why are you looking for plot in a slice-of-life show...?
Azumanga pulled it off. Then again, Azuma can actually write decent characters worth a damn; I can't claim the same for the slacker who makes K-ON.
Bizarrely enough, I thoroughly enjoyed Lucky Star and K-On! and thought that Azumanga Diaoh was way too childish...
Now I will fap to this nice image of the K-ON cast.
sooner or later i'll be hearing people who can fap to a stick girl drawing.. i really don't know if that's desperation anymore.. and Ritsu looks like a smiling monkey here, wth have they done to her?
>sooner or later i'll be hearing people who can fap to a stick girl drawing..
I take it you haven't read or watched Genshiken, then?
People who can't fap to 2D characters have something wrong with their brains...
EPIC TRUTH from Madarame...
Oh My Goddess OVA! was a 80s anime (1989) and the graphics and drawing was good and even better than the new and remade Oh My Goddess in my opinion.
4 years off, the first OH MY GODDESS OVA episode was sold in 1993. The manga had only just started in 1989.
True that, the narrow foreheads are really turn-off.
Looks like Slayers to me.
i tried but not working... need more filter
90...ah....those were some shitty years in my country...but I love the art stile.
Exactly my thoughts too, dude. And the style WAS better. Aww...well, but it's futile to tell those kiddies today anyway all they see is "sum oldshit" and continue watching their naruto etc.
You are just nostalgic old fags. And sorry but no. That doesn't look better. Sometimes we have to appreciate the age we live.
Yes i am. More doesn't always mean better. That more must be properly put in the image to look better and that's not the case here. Also some things need a simpler look for what they want to show. You can't make moe anime with very detail shading and lot's of other staff because the pic will become too serious and realistic.
You can even draw animation with each frame having the art style of Mona Lisa but it won't be anime anymore, it would be something else no matter how well detailed it would be and lot's of us won't like it.
If what you hate is moe in general then it's not the 21st century art that you hate but moe anime. Just watch something else like Texhnolyze, Hellsing or something else.
You are implying that actual shading and lines is not better?
I'm sorry, but moeblobs are just lazy looking. Like the artist was too skittish to finish the work himself and he's just leaving it for the fans to finish. Buncha bullshit.
Make me some real art, like they used to.
I'm anon from 22:35 and i agree with above anon but i wasn't even referring to the above picture, which may or may not be fitting. I'm not a nostalgiafaggot or so you are too: You can't deny the fact that something is lost since they don't use cels anymore. EVERYONE says that if they were born before '85. this has nothing to do with nostalgiafaggotry at all, it's just that a lot of kids those days can't or won't appreciate aome nice handycraft and are happy with their factory-produced anime where too often one chara looks exactly like the other. Of course some anime where mocked to use "stencils" even back then but there just were more diversity than today. Look at Lina Inverse, Gundam, Record of Lodoss War...

Except this isn't representative of 90s style. As I said in my earlier post, the likes of Sailor Moon, Urusei Yatsura, and Ranma were. Most anime had the same approach as it is now (except for those 10 second detailed reaction faces that older action anime did a lot or some OVAs), and it didn't look anywhere near as good. When you compare TV anime especially, and even many OVAs and movies to many now, it's not close. Compare Minky Momo to Shugo Chara, Ranma 1/2 to Inuyasha 09 (comparing them since they're both Takahashi), Dragonball to One Piece and Dragon Ball Kai; The Getter Robos and GaoGaiGar to Gurren Lagann, GaoGaiGar Final, and New Getter Robo; Nausicaa and Kiki's Delivery Service to Howls Moving Castle and Spirited Away , Ghost in the Shell to Ghost in the Shell Innocence. The list can go on. What about the rage of style and animation (and the amount of animation) we have now? You would never see something like FLCL/Gurren Lagann/Dead Leaves, Mononoke, Mind Game, or Dennou Coil in the 80s. The problem with nostalgiafag arguments is that it is ALWAYS full of cherrypicking. They carefully select movies and OVAs, or screenshots from an anime and treat it as if it's representative of the anime and era.
And no, shading lines does not mean superior. At the end of the day if you're lineart and coloring isn't good it doesn't matter how good your shading is anyway. This is just a style in itself (look at the Macross OVAs for instance which really pulled it off), which you use depending on the style you're going for. Anime--no--just art in general has pretty much always been this way. You don't want a cute light hearted slice of life anime like K-ON, Lucky Star, or Azumanga Daioh to have heavy shading. You put heavy shading in an anime like Hellsing.
Cel animation is what I really loved about older anime art. At it's best, it's absolutely beautiful and digital animation hasn't been able to reproduce it's type of beauty yet. However, digital animation allows studios to produce high quality art even on smaller budgets (see SHAFT anime), and there is a lot more range of animation and art styles.
I am fine with someone liking older anime art, but not when it is based on blatant nostalgiafaggotry/cherrypicking.
