Gaming Media Fawns Over “Flawless” Bayonetta

Bayonetta has been praised to high heaven by gaming rags the world over, but it seems the atrocious nature of Sega’s PS3 port is something they are keen to avoid any mention of.
The Xbox 360 version is hailed as a paragon of the genre by the international gaming press, getting a highly impressive if rather suspect metascore of 93% over 17 reviews:

However, the PS3 version, widely acknowledged to be a disaster, still manages an overall metascore of 91%, despite the porting issues:
IGN on the Xbox 360 version – 95%: “The 360 version is vastly superior to the PS3 version on a technical level, so PS3 owners fortunate enough to own a 360 should absolutely avoid the PS3 copy.”
IGN on the PS3 version – 82%: “If you have no other choice but to purchase the PS3 version, you’ll still get a kick out of it. Just be ready to be exorbitantly patient.”
Other PS3 reviews doll out top scores with scarcely a mention of the platform differences. Bayonetta’s marketing machine seems to have done its work well indeed…

Just one of the reasons I never pay attention to video game scores/reviews.
Zidus, you are really one of the few smart gamers out there. Scores and reviews based off the current checklist are flawed.
The inaccuracy of the scores are also based on threats these gaming websites get from the publishers. The publishers decides what they want people to read and what they don't want people to read.
If they paid more, they have more say on the content.
On that note, if you still feel the need to gather info about it, then it's better to look in less unofficial places like gaming blogs and such.

I don't know about the game, since I haven't played it yet, I was actually referring to the blatant hiding of facts from certain "big name" gaming sites. The hiding of the PS3 flaws for example, that's why I never pay attention to reviews and scores.
so question then... why is the 360 version superior to the ps3? can anyone explain? i have all systems, but if i'm gonna get this title i'd also like to know what bugs happened in the ps3 that the 360 didn't have
EDIT: Oh and if the fact it's only loading times and a few shades here and there, then there's no point. I'd be getting the PS3 version then
loading times means that each time you press Start you will have to wait. Each time you find a new object on the level you will have to wait for the image and description to load. When you press Start to skip the cutscene - yes, you will have to wait for the menu to appear. Level loading times are ~25 seconds or so.
also, if you can't stand low framerate, avoid the PS3 version.
The game is great but remember:
Video game rating sites will ALWAYS rate big buck games with top scores, even if they are not that good. How do you think they earn money?
Still, you have to admit that big buck games would always get better rating than a lower budget game with the same faults.
Like Aion is a completely soulless clone of what is defined with "mmo", similar to Shaiya or Rappelz but with pretty puppy eyes. Aion will still get a higher rating just because of the bigger buck put on the stake.
Also think Modern Warfare 2 or Guitar Hero 5. Being a sequel of something good will automatically put the game above average, even if it IS average or bad.
FF XIII has both of those factors combined.
Clive Barker's Jericho, Blacksite, Kane and Lynch, anything with Tony Hawk in its name, Dawn of Mana, Lair, Aion, Alone in the Dark, etc. were all either critically panned or received lukewarm ratings - and these are just a few big budget games of the last few years. And let's not forget all the small titles (Braid, Trine, Torchlight, Puzzle Quest, Galactic Civilizations II, Darwinia, Sins of a Solar Empire, etc.) that get the opposite treatment.

Why do games get such absurdly high review scores these days? I blame the moron fanboys that live by the motto "Anything less than a 85% is garbage!" If some Nintendo kiddy game doesn't get anything higher than 90%, then it's obvious that the reviewer doesn't know games and should be burned at the stake.
So now we keep getting games with a review score of 85 - 100%, even from trash like Resident Evil V, just to satisfy the frothing fanboys. Small wonder these 85%+ review scores are so worthless thesedays.
Goes to show reviews can't always be trusted.

Every review is ALWAYS going to be biased one way or another, one person's great story might be another one's trash, etc etc.
PS3 only onwers who would be buying this dumb down port would be real ashamed or simply has no taste. get GOW3 instead.

I don't get it. Both versions look exactly the same to me from what I've seen. In fact, PS3 seems to have slightly better textures than the Xbox360, if you ask me - which is typical of every multiplat game in stores so far.

if she wasnt so ugly i would kinda care, but its soooo obvious that those reviews are crap. i mean come on DMC4 was god awful and a step back from 3 in every way. it lost its combat styles, it lost its story, and it lost dante for half the game. yet it still got 9.4 and 5 out of 5. dont be fooled by these stupid sell outs. im so sick of not being able to get a decent review anymore...
Every copy of DMC from 2 to 4 must be dumped in the pacific ocean to stop humanity from degradation.
I just finished playing dmc4 yesterday and I have to say it really rocks and is just as good as 3. (Okay I didn't play 1 and 2, so don't be surprised)
why is it that whenever theres a multiplatform game the PS3 version is shitty and the XBOX version is highly appraised?

This is why I never trust this website when it comes to video game reviews/opinions. They exaggerate so much. And most of it is opinion anyways - and an opinion I disagree with 70% of the time.

Wow, IGN gave the PS3 version 13% less? That must mean the port is fucking awful in comparison. I only have a PS3, and was looking forward to this, but didn't expect it to perform this bad. Fuck this crap. I'm not buying it until they fix their issues (if ever, but probably not). Oh well, what a shame.
The combo system and the moves/weapons you get are really nice and the levels take you through several twists you would not expect in an action game to keep the gameplay interesting.
Omg I love this game I plan on getting as soon as it comes out. Idc if it takes some of my games to trade in but that game is mine from the pre-order :)
Can't really trust metacritic there. We still don't know what their "algorithm" is, nevermind the very fact that it's an aggregate site.
They put a 100 for 1up even though that site gave the game an A and their highest score is A+. They do that stuff specifically to avoid metacritic but it really just does nothing but make metacritic misinterpret them.
The PS3 version has some framerate and loading time issues, but that doesn't automatically make it a bad game. It deserves the scores it got, and I think IGN was too harsh on it.
You should definitely get the 360 version over the PS3 version if you have the option, but the PS3 version is still excellent in its own right.
I think the game is awesome, the gameplay is great, the combo system is better than any dmc, (i have played them all) the music is like some 90's anime soundtrack it reminds me to sailor moon. if you dont play it because you think she is ugly you are an asshole, do you play uncharted or god of war because you think they are handsome? coff coff fag coff. i play the 360 pal copy.

Sorry, but DMC still has one of the best combo systems to date. And Bayonetta's soundtrack does suck. It is a good game with a fresh atmosphere to gaming, but hardly the best, and will be nowhere near a classic in the near or distant future.
I don't really look much into game reviews and scores... It depends on the player to see if he enjoys it or not
hmmmmm....I was going to get the Ps3 version, then I heard about the issues, so i downloaded the demo on my 360, it looks really good and so I'll wait for 360, on the other hand I got the demo for Dante....either is buggy or is bad, I got not only bored at the ridiculous combat but mostly at how buggy it was, that was on my Ps3...I think I will wait and rent Dante but I'll buy GoW3.

Ah sounds good then, I do have a ntsc-j xbox360 but am already backlogged on games I haven't gotten 1/4 the way through yet. Will add this Xbox360 one to the buy list. I trust in sankakucomplex reporters info.
Wasn't the US & European version remade with the help of Sony? For the end of january 2010.
Read a official sony blog entry that they sadly failed to reduce the loadtimes by any significant amount.
Perhaps the problem is too deep imbedded to be patchable as a afterthought?
I'm wonder if this game will get a director's cut ot special edition later on that resolves the problems + bonus content
It makes me laugh that the PS3 version still sold far more in Japan. Just goes to show that they flat-out refuse to buy a western video game system despite some excellent games. Seeing both XBOX systems have been a disaster in Japan, it makes me wonder if Microsoft will try again, or just give up on the Japanese market and rely solely on localization companies to port Japanese titles from other systems.
All that aside, I suppose I will give Bayonetta a shot, but probably not before I hear what others close to me have to say about it.
