Ghibli’s Karigurashi no Arrietty Adapts “The Borrowers”

ghibli-unveils-karigurashi-no-arrietty-the-borrowers.jpg

Studio Ghibli has announced its next movie will be an anime adaptation of famous children’s story “The Borrowers,” to be entitled Karigurashi no Arrietty with a theatrical release due in 2010.

The movie will be an adaptation of Mary Norton’s famed “Borrowers” series of children’s novels, begun in 1952, which describe the adventures of a race of tiny people living amongst normal humans.

However, instead of being set in fifties England the story will be transposed to the Japan of 2010, with the titular protagonist Arrietty being a 14-year-old girl.

Cinematic release is due in the summer of 2010, doubtless with an international release planned in short order after this.

With the novel already a classic, Studio Ghibli looks set to strike gold once more…

So this is the new Ghibli film that was leaked (by an American student during his school field trip to Ghibli studios and posted on /a/) a few days ago ...

    Surprisingly, I'm actually anticipating this.

There was a live action movie made in 1997 called the Borrowers based off the books as well. I watched it but I don't remember too much about it. It played on cartoon network once at least, but I don't know if it went out in theaters. It's about this 4inch high people living in this house. When the owner dies this rich real estate agent wants to tear down the house and build apartments. The Borrowers fight to save their home from the big people lol.

There have been earlier Hollywood and UK treatments. Since it uses western source material, this one has a good chance of being Ghibli's biggest seller EVAR! outside Japan.

Little elf-like things that live around people. "borrowing" food and the like.

Kid finds them, takes them in, them almost killed, heartwarming ending.

    Good ol' classic stuff.

I suppose after so many stinkers and 3D films, people don't take Disney serious now, but there was a time when Disney rivaled Studio Ghibli. (And if Princess and the Frog sparks a return to 2D animation, Disney could return to that status.)

psst the princess and the frog was a good movie. Would recommend it to anyone who was a fan of the last 2d disney movie, which i belive was tarzan. Had everything i remembered disney did right back then.

Main character personality, had singing moments, the bad guy being excentric.

The last 100% 2D Disney Movie was Lilo and Stitch, with Treasure Planet being the last movie to include any 2D elements at all. After that it went all 3D.

Now, Disney owns Studio Ghibli. However, Disney (US) hasn't made anything worthwhile recently that can actually rival a Ghibli (Japan) film.

I love Totoro... It might only be boring if you watch it with "adult" eyes..

Remember when power rangers were really good, and if you watch it again it's like "OMG WTF have I been watching!?"

But if you watched Totoro when you were still little, and if you watch it again, you'll still appreciate it...

So anyway, I'm going to look forward this Miyazaki's modern magic...

I didn't really like Power Rangers either. I was about 11 at the time so maybe I was too old for it too. My brother really liked it though. He used to pretend he was one at times and one time he leaped off the couch and uppercut me in the jaw, chipping my tooth. Needless to say, I was not happy.

But yeah, you're probably right. I've only recently seen My Neighbor Totoro and didn't think much of it. It's the only Ghibli film I've seen that I didn't really like. Nausicaa is still my favorite though. It seemed to leave more of impression on me than all the others. I guess because it was a highly moral film.

Who, exactly, will be directing? "Studio Ghibli" does NOT automatically mean "Hayao Miyazaki".

Personally, I think it'd be nice if Isao Takahata handled it. He's probably the most underrated and underappreciated anime director in the world.

Isao Takahata is working on something else, "The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter", also scheduled for 2010.

It's highly likely that Miyazaki will be workingo n Karigurashi no Arrietty.

Ghibli has been trying to get new, younger directors to take over the reins though so it's not for certain yet. However, iirc, Miyazaki was signed on to direct another 3 films in 3? years with Ghibli, so there is a high possibility that he'll be directing this one.

Hiromasa Yonebayashi is directing this one; he was an animator for recent Ghibli films like Ponyo and Spirited Away.

LeGuin), Castle of Cagliostro (a Lupin III adventure), Whisper of the Heart (manga by Aoi Hiiragi), My Neighbors the Yamadas (manga by Hisaichi Ishii), and The Cat Returns (Hiiragi again)?

Nice of you to prove my point. Maybe I should have phrased it in another way:

"Can't they think up any new stories at all? Pathetic!"

But I thought of Nausicaä, which was a manga from miyazaki, so I didn't phrase it in another way. (Yeah, I know Nausicaä isn't really from ghibli.)

From the movies you listed I know everyone (except for the yamadas) and I only liked Mimi wo Sumaseba. The rest wasn't watchable for me. (And oh boy, was I looking forward to earthsea, 'cause I knew all the novels and damn, how could they fuck up such a good story so very, very bad, I still wonder. Probably it's because they were short on screen time or just didn't care 'cause all those ghibli-fanboys will like it anyway.)

No, you're just twisting things. Nausicaa was made by the Ghibli staff, but they weren't Studio Ghibli back then.

Studio Ghibli was the KyoAni of its time.

And even "Ghibli fanboys" as you put it say Earthsea sucked. What the fuck are you talking about?

    >No, you're just twisting things.
    >Nausicaa was made by the Ghibli
    >staff, but they weren't Studio
    >Ghibli back then.

Acutally you're misinterpreting things. Besides, I didn't just say Gedo Senki sucked. I was saying that Hotaru no Haka, Majo no Takkyuubin, Howl no Ugoku Shiro, Gedo Senki, Lupin Sansei: Cagliostro no Shiro and Neko no Ongaeshi sucked.

^ This. You're pretty much retarded. No one proved your point further, actually, you were just proved wrong, period. Studio Ghibli has been adapting stories into their films since they were formed so to even imply that they ever made original stories is just flat out wrong and ignorant. Like the above anon already pointed out, Nausicca was before Ghibli was formed(and to be fair, Castle of Cagliostro was, too). You can try to backpedal all you want but all it's going to do is make you look even more retarded.

    Also, Ocean Waves? Really?

Actually I myself pointed out, that Nausicaä isn't really from ghibli.

    > Studio Ghibli has been adapting
    > stories into their films since
    > they were formed so to even imply
    > that they ever made original stories
    > is just flat out wrong and ignorant.

Then you might want to tell me who is the original creator of mononoke-hime...

But actually it doesn't matter. You just proved my point further silly Anon. The point still is ghibli avoiding telling new stories. If they did tell us a new story at some point in time isn't really important for the present lack of new stories, you know.
