Ghibli’s Karigurashi no Arrietty Adapts “The Borrowers”

Studio Ghibli has announced its next movie will be an anime adaptation of famous children’s story “The Borrowers,” to be entitled Karigurashi no Arrietty with a theatrical release due in 2010.

The movie will be an adaptation of Mary Norton’s famed “Borrowers” series of children’s novels, begun in 1952, which describe the adventures of a race of tiny people living amongst normal humans.

However, instead of being set in fifties England the story will be transposed to the Japan of 2010, with the titular protagonist Arrietty being a 14-year-old girl.

Cinematic release is due in the summer of 2010, doubtless with an international release planned in short order after this.

With the novel already a classic, Studio Ghibli looks set to strike gold once more…

Apparently this movie will be directed by someone named Hiromasa Yonebayashi and not Hayao Miyazaki, according to Wikipedia.

So the movie will take place in Japan, but the main character still has an English name. Can anyone explain that?

Are they people who borrow without permission? Since they are small and all, so they don't really ask. Fail

Definitely looking forward to it. But I hate that they're changing the setting to Japan. They should keep it more faithful to the original.

Not interested. Each Ghibli film gets crappier. Or maybe its just because I'm getting older?

I wish Miyazaki would direct something for a more mature audience, like Nausicaa or a new Lupin film.

So why is it that Japanese adaptations of Western stories are gold, but Western adaptations of Japanese stories are shit?

I'm going to predict how this adaptation will go.

The female character will act exactly like Ghibli's previous female characters. She will also look like Ghibli's previous female characters, only more obviously white.

Then comes the usual Ghibli themes: Environment / Pollution / God / Politics / War.
    Which results in more browbeating.

I'll watch it. But I've gotten tired of Ghibli stuff to be honest. It's overrated.

Wow, I'm so excited! I used to love watching the American movie adaption when I was younger. Though I did always feel it was meant to be animated and not played by live actors.

"with the titular protagonist Arrietty being a 14-year-old girl"

She always HAD BEEN a 14 year old girl in the novel.

I love Totoro... It might only be boring if you watch it with "adult" eyes..

Remember when power rangers were really good, and if you watch it again it's like "OMG WTF have I been watching!?"

But if you watched Totoro when you were still little, and if you watch it again, you'll still appreciate it...

So anyway, I'm going to look forward this Miyazaki's modern magic...

    You got it backward.

Mature adults and little children love Totoro.

It's the ones in between that find it boring.

Uh, I see where it says Ghibli, but nothing about Miyazaki being involved in it. There ARE other directors/producers in the studio over there you know.

I didn't really like Power Rangers either. I was about 11 at the time so maybe I was too old for it too. My brother really liked it though. He used to pretend he was one at times and one time he leaped off the couch and uppercut me in the jaw, chipping my tooth. Needless to say, I was not happy.

But yeah, you're probably right. I've only recently seen My Neighbor Totoro and didn't think much of it. It's the only Ghibli film I've seen that I didn't really like. Nausicaa is still my favorite though. It seemed to leave more of impression on me than all the others. I guess because it was a highly moral film.

There was a live action movie made in 1997 called the Borrowers based off the books as well. I watched it but I don't remember too much about it. It played on cartoon network once at least, but I don't know if it went out in theaters. It's about this 4inch high people living in this house. When the owner dies this rich real estate agent wants to tear down the house and build apartments. The Borrowers fight to save their home from the big people lol.

There have been earlier Hollywood and UK treatments. Since it uses western source material, this one has a good chance of being Ghibli's biggest seller EVAR! outside Japan.

Kid finds them, takes them in, them almost killed, heartwarming ending.

    Good ol' classic stuff.

Now, Disney owns Studio Ghibli. However, Disney (US) hasn't made anything worthwhile recently that can actually rival a Ghibli (Japan) film.

I suppose after so many stinkers and 3D films, people don't take Disney serious now, but there was a time when Disney rivaled Studio Ghibli. (And if Princess and the Frog sparks a return to 2D animation, Disney could return to that status.)

psst the princess and the frog was a good movie. Would recommend it to anyone who was a fan of the last 2d disney movie, which i belive was tarzan. Had everything i remembered disney did right back then.

Main character personality, had singing moments, the bad guy being excentric.

The last 100% 2D Disney Movie was Lilo and Stitch, with Treasure Planet being the last movie to include any 2D elements at all. After that it went all 3D.

Also Princess is the first one to have a job, works hard, and the prince actually has flaws.
