I already know that the VN is better since adapting that convoluted story line in 2 hours while still keeping everything intact IS IMPOSSIBLE!
...BUT I am hyped none the less. That shit is just too good and even after getting mangled a bit the outcome is still sensational, just like it was with the anime and this is set out to be a better experience right out of the box (with more budget and better arc to follow).
Why do I get the feeling the movie will be the same basically as the series? I doubt they're going to be able to focus on the characters in any greater detail in the movie than they did in the tv series since it's only like 2 hours. (even if it was 3 hours it wouldn't matter anyway).
Number 2, is that this movie will probably just be a cookie cutter of the series, except probably with more lens flares to make it cool and shinny. I wouldn't count on there be anymore intense sex scenes like there are from the visual novel. Just because it's a movie doesn't mean nowadays it'll open it up to more intense scenes like that since I'm sure there's a rating system and certain theaters won't show it. They'd want it to be open to a broader audience.
Now this doesn't mean I don't WANT it to be a bit more like the visual novel, what it means is I highly doubt it will happen due to the spinelessness of the japanese anime industry as of late. I think this movie is just opening it up to get more people to shell out bucks for stuff they already seen, and it's not like this hasn't been done before (i'm looking in your direction evangelion).

The first part of the game that you have just beaten, and that the original anime was 80% based on, is called "Fate". The second and vastly better route is called "Unlimited Blade Works", and that is the route this movie is following. The manga is also following this route. The third route, which has by far the most complex and deep plot, but which is considerably darker in theme/tone, and that I doubt will ever be animated, is called "Heaven's Feel". Have fun playing the rest of the game btw. It is very much worth the time to finish it. An awesome experience. :-)

Definitely my favorite route from the VN, here's hoping they do the route justice..also also for some Rin sex. Gotta love that tsundere charm. The Shirou vs servant fights should be epic if they are even a little faithful to the fights in the VN.

hmm, i've played the Visual Novel. Gotten all 40 Tiger Stamps. Gotten 5 days of playtime, etc. And I still like the anime. Sure it could be better but it certainly has its charms. After all it's what got me into the Visual Novel to start with. :3

Having watched the anime, I have always felt that Rin is the main actor. Heck, even Rin is the first to appear in the OP (Ol' eyebrows Shirou has had enough screen time already). My greatest F/SN wish is to see Rin having her own story arc. No, doujin don't count...

You only feel that way because you've only watched the anime. Play the visual novel, and Shirou being the main character becomes apparant. He's also neither the idiot, nor the weakling he is in the anime, in the UBW route (which this movie is following), or the game in general. And I have to warn you now that while UBW has Rin as the main heroine as opposed to Saber, it is also the route with the largest focus on Shirou out of them all, as it is the route that actually tells his story, and the truth about him. And I love it. That said, Rin-chama FTW! ^^ She's defenitely my favourite character in the series. Though Archer and Lancer (he's nothing special in the anime, but totally awesome in UBW in the VN) are really awesome as well. Agreed on the zettai ryoukki btw. ;D
Experiencing the Visual novel has always been my intention since me done watching the anime back in late 2007, but my inability to read moon runes hindered me. mirror moon's F/SN translation project [http://mirrormoon.org/projects/fate_stay_night] was my hope, but back then, it was WIP. Now, with the project done, it's just a matter of time searching for the game to finally fire it up!

If you've gone through the visual novel, you'd be able to understand why the anime is a piece of shit. It's as simple as that.
It's mostly because it's inferior to the path in the visual novel that it's supposed to recreate, and I agree with those sentiments.
The anime sucks because it tried to mix the three paths and failed horribly, even on the path (Fate route it was heavily based on. Shiro for example is an idiot in Fate, but the VN gives him some inner monologues to explain his behavior. These monologues weren't in the anime so he still comes of as an idiot for no apparent reason.
Also because they tried to mix the routes, character development and plot points were either dropped early and forgotten, or come out of nowhere. Take Shiro's fighting ability for example. In Fate he is a sucky fighter usually relying on Saber and Rin to bail him out. In UBW he becomes a fairly competent fighter by observing and copying Archer (which also serves as foreshadowing). In the anime Shiro learns to fight mid-series for no apparent reason, then towards the end his fighting skill just....disappears.
As much as I like F/SN, I think it's lame that the fans of F/SN bash the anime version. With all the hatred the TV anime gets from F/SN fans, I'm surprised they're even bothering with a movie. If the anime adaptation was so awful, wouldn't it be better to just let F/SN die in obscurity?
You're listening to the bitchy rants of a few otaku? The real truth is that Fate is revered as an anime and it's ratings then and standing now reflect that. It introduced many of us to Saber and just for that it's pure win. I love the VN and the anime and consider them to be independent of eachother. Sitting in judgement as to how closely an anime sticks to it's source is the territory of those who gave ascended the highest ranks of loserdom.

As an anime fan, and as a fate/stay night fan, I think that they can try to make a good adaption at least with UBW. If they succed, I won't hunt them this year :D.
