China’s Dried Puppy Meat Trade

The latest grotesque delicacy to come from China is apparently dried puppy, demonstrating that in China the phrase “dog-lover” has an unfortunate additional nuance.

Dog meat is also famously popular in neighbouring Korea, although not normally as jerky. China also enjoys a substantial trade in cat meat

Meat is meat. It doesn't count if it's swine, cow or dog. Just imagine, what would be for a religious Indian to watch the killing of a holy cow. For us it's a common thing thou.

Only one thing is disturbing: No, not that the dog is the so called "best friend" of the men, but the flesh of the meat-eating animals is oftenly unpalatable. In our culture we eat only herbivorous animals.

06:16 Anon observing that this was on Rotten.com ages ago shows how retarded it is to have this on Sankaku Complex.

I was kind of hoping we were done with the HURRR PEOPLE DOING BAD THINGS TO ANIMALS, especially in China since it's not uncommon to skin animals alive or beat them to death.

Yes, it's an issue of food but Americans don't skin cows alive or bludgeon them to death, they get shot in the head and die instantly.

Well Americans got the money and the technologies to kill in a single shot. If you ain't got the tool, sunny, use what ya got. This is life and people gotta do what they gotta do to make a living. This act is far worst than killing another person for personal gain. So before you say cute, just take a moment and put yourself into the shoes of those killing these cute little critters. After all, we're on top of the food chain, and if we don't eat what we want, than are we really on top?

you know the sad part about this is?

Dogs are well known to be mans best friend

Don't get me wrong im not trying to be the voice that tells people what they should eat. It's just that the animal has a high trust in humans compared to most animals not to mention loyal and for it to be stabbed in the back just to be eaten...man...that is just I don't even know what to call it....

Yes I do understand that the meat you eat is no different from theirs, it still just doesn't feel right

Chinese (well, people 15,000 years ago in Northern China) domesticated dogs the earliest though, so they've had a longer relationship with dogs than anyone else. Best Friends, dinner buddies.

    Comment by Anonymous
    07:44 15/12/2009 # ! Neutral (0)

Anom is right. Only reason why dog eating started and persist in some cultures like South Korea and Native American is because that was the ONLY type of animal they had to domesticate. Cows, sheep, and goat originated in the Middle East, and it took time for beef to spread to the other corners of the world. Naturally, humans raised and ate what was available locally. In the case above, it was domesticated wolves.

The Native Americans didn't have access to anything other than dog till the Europeans came. Even when they started raising new animals for meat, dog stayed as an acceptable food item cause that was what they were use to eating.

The issue is also cultural. As Kir Royal says, dog has a special place in Western society as a mammalian companion. But in China, a man's best friend is not a dog. Its a cow that can plow a field, pull your wagon to town, and shit out fuel for your cooking fire. To a Chinese, a dog is useless for anything other than FOOD. When the decision comes whether to eat a valuable cow or a useless dog, Sparky ends up on the dinner table.

Perhaps now in China, the idea of chewing on a mutt doesn't fit their palette these days since its gotten easier to feed one self.. Doubtful that's the case out in the outlands far from a big city though. Probably where most of those pictures comes from.

Dog feasting is still popular back from where I was born in vietnam so canines rank high on the menu in many third world countries to this day.

    To Anom on 08:48:

Noticed that i said "raised for meat". Yes, Native Americans had access to game meat such as bison an deer, but these animals are not DOMESTICATED. Plentiful bisons were only available to Plain natives, but in Eastern USA natives could only count on dogs that they raised themselves for a steady supply of meat. Hunters don't always get the chance to bag a deer everyday, and small game like porcupine are not nearly enough to supplement the meat larder, hence dogs were mostly commonly available meat on the menu.

I think the story is bias, American's use to eat dogs in the early turn of the colonization. Not to mention Pigs are actually smarter than Dogs, yet are eaten as well. By what measure is it acceptable and unacceptable? Is it intelligence? Abundance? Character? Cuteness?

Also the article plays utter ignorance to the how main stream or should I say lack of mainstream the food is. Especially considering the popularity of "Bush" meats in European countries which account for most of the deaths of wild animals in foreign countries, such as gorilla meant, monkey brains, and other such exotic foods.

Though I would never eat a dog, I would also never judge another culture on their practices of food. Especially when there is a trace of it in my own culture.

France has eaten dog meat, Germany has eaten dog meant as common food by the way, Native American's used dog meat, as well as many expeditions in early America along with many colonists.

This article is ignorant, and it makes me wonder about the many other stories on this side, about how inflated they might be.

Good thing the Chinese kill swiftly then! Not like in America where egg chickens stuck in the same cage their whole lives or broken-kneed cows surrounded by their own shit never get to live at all.

NO ONE skins things alive to eat them. That's incredibly inefficient.
