Man Infects Wife with HIV “So She Would Have Sex with Me”

A man who secretly infected his wife with HIV so she would be willing to have sex with him faces a possible 14-year sentence.
The 35-year-old man, an immigrant resident of New Zealand, tested positive for HIV in 2004 when he arrived in the country, though his 33-year-old wife and child were uninfected.
His wife subsequently agreed to stay with him to preserve the family, and initially consented to having protected sex with him. Later she would refuse him sex out of fear of being infected:
“I just wanted to maintain the relationship for the sake of the children. He insisted on staying and he mentioned that he was not worried about sex any more. All he wanted (was) to see the children grow with both parents under one roof.”
However, her husband was apparently so desperate for sex that he concocted a scheme where he would secretly infect her with his own blood whilst she slept so that she would once again willing to sleep with him, and be unable to leave him.
Noticing only a mark on her leg, it was four months before she learnt she was infected, thanks to the results of a medical check-up:
“All he said [was] he was sorry. He said, ‘I used needles on you because I wanted you to be the same as me so that you can live with me and you won’t leave me’.”
Police soon suspected her infection came from the husband as she had repeatedly tested negative for the disease during a year-long abstinence from sex.
The man, who admits the offence, faces up to 14-years in prison on charges of willfully infecting another with a disease.

I find it absolutely hilarious how little credit give to the role of sexual relations between people.
This is tragic, simple as that. The guy just wanted to be with his wife. Does that condone him? No, and he shall be punished either way. But all this blind, unprecedented rage, please. Morality is not perfect.
Plenty of people cheat. Is it a deal breaker? Most of the time it is. But some couples are able to get past that. It does not make it right, but it should not be held as a death sentence.
It was great they tried for the kids, but the guy should have realized he would not be able to handle living under the same roof with the woman he loved, and decided to go with a weekend meeting thing.
But as things are, he made a mistake, and he shall be punished in more ways than one. He deserves that, but not animosity from strangers.

Note that he is an immigrant, and that the NZ authorities did not bar him from entry despite his clearly pre-existing medical condition, which they would now have to subsidize treatment for. Not only are the authorities putting NZ residents at risk from infection, they are also squandering taxpayer money. This is the real scandal.
The 2nd question is where the immigrant family is from. Obviously this detail is being obscured for PC reasons, but really, some profiling might have screened the man out and prevented this tragedy.

check it out. If they had sex without a condom, each time he would only have a .1% chance of infecting her. They could have sex several times a week for years and she would still have a low chance of being infected. And that's without a condom. Why didn't they just use a condom?

Its still the husbands fault though. He even said himself that he didn't care about the sex just as long as his family would stay together. The agreement is through sickness and health. Not health only if you get a sickness I'm walking. That's logic of marraige and the contract terms.
You can't sit in a marraiage and then deny your husband sexual intimacy. Now I will be lenient and say you can stop the intercourse, but you still have to provide an alternative sexual suggestion.

I think the wife should also face some sort of punishment/sanction for the emotional abuse/stress she placed on her husband. Then again with being infected she recieved a death sentence, so maybe not.
It's a romantic thought, but a marriage vow isn't the same as a legally binding contract. The laws and contract are pretty much limited to getting tax breaks and hospital visitation rights. He wasn't honest to her in the first place, either because he previously knew he had a possibly fatal sexually transmitted disease but didn't share this information, or by gaining this disease, possibly through cheating even, and hiding it. These are reasons enough to walk, never mind the disease.
Secondly, she never actually left him.
Third, plenty of married couples do not have sexual relations. They're not required for marriage, although they do make things easier.
Fourth, as you learned in your high school health class, protected sex is not guaranteed to ward off STDs.
We don't know the circumstances surrounding how the man got HIV. If he was born with it through his mother and therefore was not at fault for having the disease, then what you said about the woman's behavior is probably true-- she could have been more open in finding sexual alternatives, although genital contact is out of the question (so perhaps something with toys, although some couples aren't comfortable with that kind of thing). However, if he obtained it through infidelity (which may be quite possible, considering that in all of their previous sexual escapade, she escaped uninfected), she's certainly not obliged to him at all. However, in no case is she obliged to continue to have sex with him.
I think she should be obliged. When people are single they can have sex with as many people whenever wherever and not think twice. When you get married you only get that person. sexual aggression or non aggression shouldn't be penalized.
If that's a problem don't get married.
