60% of Japanese Agree “Children are Unnecessary”

Government surveys of the Japanese population reveal unprecedented numbers no longer see having children as “necessary,” with some 60% of men and women in their twenties and thirties seeing no need to bother reproducing.
The Cabinet Office public opinion polls, covering over 3,000 people, found an overall 38.7% of men and 46.4% of women saw no need to have children.
Of these, 63% of those in their twenties and 59% of those in their thirties had no interest in children.
Additionally, 55.1% of respondents opposed the statement “The husband should work outside and protect the family,” an increase of 3% from the previous survey.
The government explains the changes as being because “diversification of people’s ways of life has proceeded.”
Many are interpreting these results not so much as a lack of interest, but rather a lack of ability – general perceptions of both marriage and childrearing are that they are prohibitively expensive for those of only average means…

Nothing strange. Live in Japan for a while and you will understand. For a salaryman/woman a child is only the cost. In a society, where everything is very expensive and a human lives only on the salary children are absolutely unnecessary. In previous ages, where people lived in majority on their work in the field, children were a big help and evidently the insurance policy + retirement fund. When parents were too old to work in the field, children work and give protection and welfare to their parents. In situation, where retirement funds are obligatory for everybody and guaranteed by the state, no one wants to have children - it is always better to have pension funded by children of which raising costs were covered by other "jackasses".
yeah, except for the obvious problem the article's about - who replaces these people? Yes that makes sense from a purely monetary standpoint, however, that purely monetary standpoint is founded on a concept humans invented - basically money is make-believe, like time. Concepts our culture is built upon, and inseperable from.
These people have rather lost touch with some basic logic here. It's not a very well-thought out plan, kind of like using gum to seal a proverbial dam leak - sure it's incredibly cost effective for the moment, and works. But you're setting yourself up for amusing New Orleans-sized dam-related problems in the future...
Perhaps if the cost of living wasn't as high, people'd have money to raise children. However, that probably doesn't solve the "we don't need kids at all" mentality the Japanese seem to have - it's not worth the trouble to them.

It's has always striken me as ironic that, all while birth rates in Japan have plunged, the overall ethnic japanese population across its many colonies worldwide has enjoyed a fairly healthy net growth. However that buys the motherland nothing, because nationalistic types have a hard time accepting even the idea of ethnic "pure" japanese descendants acquiring full citizenship.
I believe that in the end, when only about 17 ethnic japanese remain in the islands, they will start to more seriously consider the need for immigration - but then, they'll probably prefer to give citizenship rights to androids. -_-
Accepting such results in a cavalier manner will be detrimental to their nation, or have they forgotten that their birth rate is fukken low. This should spur a copy of the well-known Swedish(?) govt program to encourage procreation for the betterment of Japan.
Otherwise, easy takeover for China or N. Korea in the future.

Having kids just to support the economy is likely the dumbest justification imaginable. Fuck the economy, it's not like that pattern of thinking can be sustained.
But Japan WILL suffer in the long term if rival nations refuse to limit their numbers. Granted I see the Chinese and people in India eventually having troubles feeding billions where everyone else is feeding millions.
All Japan has to do is TOTALLY close their borders and they will do just fine. It's the same with the US, all they need to do is shoot illegal Mexicans on sight and problem solved. Not that they can, as they let too many in and then allowed them to vote.
It's not about room either. Canada has room to waste, yet our population still needs to EXPAND to maintain the economic status quo.
But I have a son, and I think he's the best thing that ever happened to me. Picking a career over having kids, on the basis of a career is 'better' is fucked in the head thinking. Abstaining from having kids on the basis of you can't provide for them might be a good reason though. But there is one firm rule. If you wait till 'you can afford them' get used to being childless.

The reason they gave about these results shows how unable they are to maneuver around this obstacle(and a whole many others like teen prostitution etc).
I think that as long Japanese have their racial trait of having complete and unwavering faith in their leadership the problems are only going to escalate :S.

Africa isn't a problem. The average family is lucky if two of their 5+ children reach adulthood. In some African countries half the population has AIDS (which there is spread by heterosexual sex - the husbands fucking others than their wives e.g. because of being lonely working in a faraway city to support his family), and a lot of children who die before the age of 7 because of being born with AIDS. Essentially, they HAVE to outbreed the amount of child deaths lest they all die out - and no, that would not be a good thing no matter how much the KKKers want it to be.

I have nothing to say against this trend. I don't ever want any children either, nor do I see the point of marriage, since I'm an atheist, not to mention it only brings disadvantages and no advantages, especially in case of any future divorce, if that should happen. And lord knows our planet earth would be happy if our numbers went down a little instead of continuing to grow. Course, I wouldn't want the japanese to die out, that would mean no manga or anime. ^^ To anyone thinking I'm too extreme: careface.

Japan does not have a birthrate problem, they have an overpopulation problem. There are too many retired people chasing after the salaries of too few people coming into the system. The reason people aren't having kids is because it costs too damn much and thus doesn't make sense logically. That is the market cooking up a solution to the population problem. There are too many people competing for too few resources, so the cost of everything rises and living becomes that much harder. Bringing less people in the system is exactly what they need to reign in the cost of living. Instead of fighting the cure they should be embracing it. Maybe they'll have some elbow room in a couple generations if they keep it up.
If Japan depopulates down to like 100,000 Japanese then the people that say the Japanese are going extinct might have a point, but we all know that's not going to happen.

Actually, the chances of giving birth to a baby with genetic defects increases as early as age 25. If a woman wants to have children she should do it before she's 25. Evolutionarily and throughout the majority of human history, women have been bearing children from their early-mid teens. Go against evolution and suffer the consequences at your baby's risk.

I really haven't checked how much these testube babies are good for.And i even don't know how long they are using that.
But a 40y old women can have more problems which could effect the childs health,eh even when test tube are there,it's still the same genetical risk i think.But hey those are just some increased factors,they don't need to happen at all.
