A survey reveals what boasts and bragging the Japanese find the most annoying in their friends, with the list most probably resonating the world over…

The ranking:

1. They boast about their success with the opposite sex

2. They boast about how much money they have

3. They boast about how miserable they are

4. They boast about how popular they are

5. They boast about all their brand goods

6. They boast about their children

7. They boast about their spouse

8. They boast about how busy they are

9. They boast about poor health

10. They boast about not sleeping

2ch offers alternatives such as “not watching TV” and “hentai sex,” to say nothing of “I have no friends.”

I know this dude that end up being proud of himself when he doesn't sleep or eat over a longer period of time. Then complain about getting sick and being miserable afterwards...

I know a girl who pretty much boasts that she got raped when she was younger. Or.. so she says. Maybe she just wants attention. I don't know. I might believe her though if she wasn't boasting it all over the place.

Oshaikeuchi, rape is like the holy grail of attention whoring. A girl can milk that literally her entire life, for a never-ending supply of sympathy.

Not to downplay the seriousness of rape, but honestly, no one wants to hear about it. That's what a psychiatrist is for.

Sad but true. I have an old friend who always brought up her "rape." I really don't believe her as she does not seem that emotionally effected. But that's fucked up to think that someone would do that just for attention.

Maybe the girls above enjoy being raped and are asking for it, or some sex, in their strange ways? I don`t understand their behavior, but i can`t boast about knowing too much of how women think. Who does?

Whoa, Oshaikeuchi! We only got to know you one day ago in the forums, and you already manage to make a first post, which gets upvoted to infinity too! XD Way to go.

Anyway, I really agree with the discussion going on here. It's obvious some people boast about their misery so that they'll get some attention. Also, I aqlso used to have a classmate who used to boast about how she got raped when she was younger. It was annoying as fucking hell.

This makes me want to just tell people they're massive attention seekers when they say something like this. I think I'll do that, next time someone does it to me.

Not necessarily, there's this one guy I know who is a genius but though he's book smart, he's not smart socially. He pisses people off left and right because he'll brag about how smart he is or he'll say something less direct but equally annoying about his "superior" intelligence. Ugh.

A smart person who's not socially retarded, knows how to dumb themselves down to other people's level.

Acting smart all the time, even if it's not on purpose just rubs other people the wrong way. They'll think you're bragging even if you're not trying to.

That said, unless I'm dealing with someone professionally, I'll shut them down completely if they try to start a conversation with me about celebrities or reality tv shows. There's a limit to how far one can dumb themselves down...

No I think when the intelligent people are boasting, it goes a little more like this:
"Didn't you KNOW that was gonna happen"
    instead of
"I wouldn't have been so stupid" <- insult

boasting isn't really worth it, because a week later you could lose everything anyway

'has to do with' is different still

talking about non-personalised experiences and the world around you is different to saying 'oh, i have a sexy girlfriend... isb;t she sexy, bet you wish you had a girlfriend as awesome as mine'

Well Ayu, I thin talking about oneself with a friend from time to time is OK; but there are a shitload of interesting things you can comment in a normal conversation withoug being boring. Just a suggestion of a few topics: current political events, new technologies and discoveries, events in economy and the market, etc, etc.

Even petty things make for good conversations. Like the deliciousness of the curry in that Indian restaurant (which can easily be expanded into a conversation on what makes a good curry or Indian Curry vs Anywhere else).

“I have no friends.” - Sad, but true. What makes a friend anyway? People I know and hang out with? As the idealist I am, I can say I have no friends.

Because that's what society expects of people.

People that drop you the moment you're in need of help, aren't friends.

And that's why I'm proud of my friends. There's this one time I got into a car accident (albeit a minor one), and most of them showed up to see if I was ok (it was at night and we just finished spending the night out and they started wondering what was taking me so long).

How can you boast about things like poor health? Doesn't boast mean something like "beeing proud of"?

    Comment by Anonymous
    05:49 03/12/2009 # ! Neutral (0)

Some people crave attention to the point that they rely on things that you wouldn't normally consider being 'proud of' as a conversation point.

For example, 'I got NO sleep last night man, I'm so awesome I don't even need it.', or 'I've got a huge cut on my ballsack, it looks deadly.'

It can also be boasted as a Woe is Me, I suffer so much. Pity Me, Feel bad for Me, worry about Me, Me, Me.

I have a very close friend who does that sort of thing sometimes. She'll talk about how she's So busy she just so tired all the time and all that. I think she's just seeking validation, like she's awesome and works hard and she's trying to prove it by being whiny and pompous. When really we all work hard, long hours and we All get tired. It doesn't make you special, and you don't need to act like you are for me to give a damn about you.

    But everyone has their issues.
