Anime otaku are despairing over the news that the Winter 2010 anime season will see only some 16 new series airing, compared to 24 the year prior, a decrease of a third.
The list of new Winter 2010 anime runs along these lines (give or take a few depending on what is included as “TV anime”):
Baka to Test to Shōkanjū
Chowder
ChuuPara
Dance in the Vampire Bund
Durarara!!
Gundam UC
Hanamaru Youchien
Hidamari Sketch×☆☆☆
Kaitou Reinya
Katanagatari
Ladies versus Buttlers!
Nodame Cantabile Finale
Okami Kakushi
Omamori Himari
Seikon no Qwaser
Sora no Woto
Winter 2009 saw some 24 titles, and Winter 2008 26 or so.
The flood of low quality moe anime over the past few years seems to have proven unsustainable, if not highly damaging, just as many predicted – just whether this is the popping of an unsustainable bubble to be followed by a gradual recovery, or the symptoms of a longer term decline remains to be seen…

LOL! THE MOE-POOL HAS ALL BEEN USED UP.... SOMEONE NEEDS TO MAKE A SUPER-ORIGINAL STORY TO ATTRACT NEW ATTENTION.
EXAMPLE:
-A STORY OF A GIRL WHO FOUND HERSELF IN THIRD-PERSON, LIKE IN A VIDEO GAME?
-OR ITS APOCALYPTIC EARTH AND A GIRL IN A GIANT CANISTER SLEEPS UNTIL ALIEN-HUMANS FOUND HER
YOU KNOW? SOMETHING THAT PROVOKES THOUGHT...
^ If these are examples of a super-original interesting story, I'd keep my moe anime and their decline, thanks.
Though provoking... LULZ
As always, the 'moe-factor' gets the blame. Nice to know that people still like looking for scapegoats in all the wrong places.
If the current market trend is anything to go by, moe is what's keeping the industry ALIVE right now. While there are other types of shows that are also successful (Bakemonogatari for example), moe is, last I checked, the largest dominating factor, the biggest seller and thus the biggest contributor to the anime industry's wealth.
True, a bit more variety would be appreciated, but to pinpoint it to one 'problem' (especially one that's highly debatable in terms of it actually being a problem) is pure guesswork.
Take note that the world is still in an economic crisis and Japan has also caught onto it. A better idea is to wait and see if this trend continues after the current recession is over. THEN you can start pointing fingers (hopefully in the right places then).
Bakemonogatari is a moe show.^^U
As long as there are 2 decent shows, it'll be like any other season for me. Hopefully things will pick up for the Spring/Summer seasons.
Anyone remember what TV anime was like before 1996, the year of Evangelion? It was pretty limited, let me tell you- most anime was OAVs and movies. Evangelion started the boom, with classics like Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Utena, Escaflowne and Love Hina following in its wake. This boom has continued for over a decade, but now I think it's simply run out. And yes, I blame the endless torrent of crappy, unambitious, plotless moe/fanservice crap.
Hopefully the amount of crap animes have been reduced and all that remains are the good ones. Good anime like Chowder...?
You know what, an anime version of Chowder would be hilarious, like Super Milk Chan.
unicorn and dance in the vampire bund is the only series i'm looking forward to
Lack of ZnT 4 disturbs me
Go read ZnT light novels, they're far more interesting than anime. ZnT TVs have been going downhill from average 1st season to crappy last one, and if this trend continues, 4th season better not happen.
How easily we forget there is a world wide economic recession crisis.
This is a very yellow headline by the way.
Omamori Himari yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesssss!!!!!! (>_<)
Someone needs to make totally unoriginal and derivative anime in which scantily dressed schoolgirls run around flashing their boobs and panties, are hot for each other, and want to have sex with their brothers.
Did you miss the past year of anime?
The sun has finally set on the moe empire...
Ohh.. Seikon no Qwaser... I wonder how fucked up the TV release will be.. :S
On a side note...
Nodame!!!! Damn and there's also an upcomming Live Action Movie. Can't wait!!!!
oh lol.
They said in Seitokai that they're making an anime for BakaTest. Nice it see it actually going through.
YES FINALLY Hanamaru Youchien!
ITS TIME FOR UBER LOLICON PRIDE.
Yeah, this definitely isn't finalized... but eh.
I notice not many of the bigger studios have shows on this list...
Gundam Unicorn, Durara! and Dance in The Vampire Bund is there. I'm still gonna enjoy the winter anime despite the lower number of titles.
Less moe? Finally. Maybe they will start with some real shows after 10 years.
Geez. You sounds like a old man preaching while seated in the park feeding the ducks. In my times the anime was all good and shiny, with intelligent plot, magistrality executed twist, elaborated characters, photorealistic quality and.. and... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz....
Donwrated comment? Yes, the truth hurts.
Chowder lol reminds me from cartoon network
Can't wait for Seikon no Qwaser and Dance in the Vampire Bund.
There's Gundam UC. Fuck the rest.
What about unconfirmed shows? IIRC, Shakugan no Shana season 3 should air in the Winter 2010 season as well.
You do know the lack of anime this season is due to the Olympics right? I mean its better to run less during a big event then have shows preempted as Canada kicks everyone's ass up and down the ice rink. Remember the fiasco 2008 summer games was?
This season's going to be just fine, don't freak out. Vampire Bund, Unicorn, Nutbladder Sketch, Durara, Nodame Cantabile all will almost undoubtedly turn out to be perfectly watchable. At least, if you're not some ignorant faggot.
That's not even taking into account series that were totally under the radar that wind up being sleeper hits, of which there is usually at least one per season.
Also keep in mind that Gainax is doing Hanamaru Kindergarten. They'll make it entertaining, trust me.
Well, the economy is shit now, so it's expected anyway
I fap at Omamori Himari
It looks like fansub groups will b put on the competitive mark with so many fansub groups after 16 series, this winter will be epic.
Chowder? The "Chowder" from the Cartoon Network? I think that's funny. If the Anime bubble has indeed burst, it surely needs a rest and a deep inner-search into it's purpose in life and what it wants to achieve in the future. It is up to the producers and creators if they want to continue providing an endless (and tiresome) litany of panty flashes and sexually charged plots regarless of logic and reason, or to create, once in a while, thoughtful and critically noticeable material.
And nothing of value was lost!
I think I count like 3 or 4 shows there. I literally can't tell most of them apart.
Cobra is the proff things will now get better, it was that kind of animes that started the cult that later lead to the anime fandom everywhere.
Fuck yes, Hidamari
Hmmm, the abundance of moe-loli/slice-of-life anime I see....seriously this shit is getting old.
Anime sucks right now.
It was to be expected. The big players in the industry in Japan said they'd be doing so anyway (the world economy helped somewhat). Less moe/ecchi series is good for the industry since the market is flooded with it. *insert Chappelle pussy jk here*
That being said, I'll be looking forward to Dance in the Vampire Bund, Gundam UC and Seikon no Qwaser.
Why do Hanamaru Youchien seem to be a parody spinoff of World Embryo?
The characters are very similar.
Look on the sunny side.
Maybe they will start concentrating their resources on a few good shows, Instead on just shelling out a lot of mediocre shows, then marketing the hell out of the few that manage to actually sell moderately well.
"Gundam UC" isn't a series, Artefact, it's a continuity. Furthermore, Gundam Unicorn isn't a series either.
Gundam unicorn? I thought the release was set to be in spring not winter
Thank God. Maybe now we'll get some quality over quantity out of Japan.
WOOHOO! NODAME!
Well it doesnt seem like anime is going away. Prolly aint good for the American market though. Then again it's never really taken off over here.
That's odd, that's not what I'm hearing. I'm not hearing "I want a more diverse catalog of shows" or "I want some deeper shows" from the other users, I'm hearing things along the lines of "I want moe/fanservice shit gone". See the difference?
All I hear is you guys equating moe or fanservice to a lack of quality and continuously rant as if though their very existence is the reason why the anime market is in the state it is right now. The might help to broaden their audiences, but that's not what what the anti-moe/fanservice users are wanting, based on what they're saying. All I see is a bunch of idiots trying to look for a scapegoat.
For now I plan to see (the list may increase as the season): Okami Kakushi (Ryukishi07-sama!!! *-*), Baka to Test to Shōkanjū (Popular ligh novel), Dance in the Vampire Bund (It looks to be awesome), Ladies versus Buttlers! (Fanservice is always good), Sora no Woto (KyoAni-fagism lol)...
For the rest I will see 3 or 4 episodes and make my conclusions.
new interesting animes!!! one of the best moments of the year!!!
I want to see the vampire one. I have enough of that twilight crap.
