China Tries to Censor Foreign Countries

China claims not to interfere with the internal affairs of other countries, but many are now alarmed by its efforts to enforce its own brand of totalitarian censorship on other countries, with several recent cases highlighted.
The BBC describes how the Chinese consulate brazenly “urged” the International Film Festival, held recently in Melbourne, to ban a film about a Uighur critic.
The director of the festival was shocked by this official attempt to censor the event:
“It came down to [the consular official] saying we need to justify our decision to include the film in the programme. It was a remarkable display of confidence and arrogance.”
The festival went ahead and included the film, but was then mysteriously subjected to a sustained campaign of hacking, threats and spam, with some going so far to threaten the director’s family.
The hackers defaced the website with a Chinese flag, and other Chinese participants swiftly withdrew their films, leaving little doubt as to where the trouble originated.
Although interest in the film actually increased dramatically following the fracas, the intimidation still made the event organisers reconsider how they include such films in the future.
Another similar case was documented at the recent Frankfurt Book Fair – the event was told to ban two dissident writers, which it initially did but then backtracked on. When they were finally allowed, their participation triggered a walkout by part of the Chinese delegation.
China even complains about nations allowing critics to enter their countries, having recently told Japan it should not allow the Uighur dissident over whose film it was so concerned to enter the country.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry says such actions do not constitute interference:
“I believe the Chinese government has not violated the principle of interfering in others’ internal affairs.”
A Chinese environmental campaigner, one of the writers China attempted to ban from the fair, explains bluntly:
“China is using its economic influence to threaten its trade partners in order to censor what they don’t like.”
With such a ruthless, corrupt and headstrong (or quite possibly terrified) government, such tactics are unsurprising, but with so many companies vulnerable to commericial blackmail stemming from their desperation to do business in or with China, the real scale of the problem could be much larger – how many such companies or even governments would be willing to publish or support opinions critical of China’s government if they had to forego commercial or political relations as a result?

China is scary.
Get ready for WW3.
From me to the Chinese government, suck my cock.
This is old news consindering the Beasty Boys been through the process in China of being band to never sell there music in that Country because they supported "Free Tibet" Movement in 1996-2009.
Oh come on. You hear occasional news that South Korea also censors a lot. From "Pro-Roh MH" to North Korea. Censorship is also necessary for democratic countries.
Sad reality.
I hate china so very deeply. I have never considered myself racist, but that idea takes a flying leap off the sears tower when you mention the Chinese.
Who china think they are?
The ruler of the earth?
Get back to your gate, China!!
Well, its the world's fault for recognizing the "legit" government to be Beijing instead of the rightful government in Taipei.
This is not the first time that commie country have tried to butt into other country's internal affairs. Most notably Korizumi's regular visits to the war memorial.
Suck to be it, I live in "Syonan-to". So WTF are they up to. Mean their woman's cut worth more than the rest of the world?
What's that? China denying people basic human rights, and threatening foreigners' lives, with people too scared to fight against it due to China having the world's economies in its pocket?
Sounds like terrorism to me. Let's "liberate" the fuck out of China if we finish up with Iraq.
What's up with human rights, it is something decided by the society itself. Every country (or even smaller communities) have different definition of human rights. There is no such thing as universal human rights, UDHR is just a mere guidelines. Just see the white haired dude in white suit ruling over syonan-to freedom of speech, freedom of expression and freedom of assembly are restricted there.
OK, I'll stop here, I don't want to get sued for slander.
Actually the geneva convention defined basic human rights.
Obama is getting his ass kicked by terrorists in both Iraq & Afganistan, & now he's got the Nobel Peace Prize. I wonder when he'll be finishing up, if he's not planning to withdraw anyway regardless of the current situation.
The more they ban, the more it shows how backwards/inferior compared to other countries, just like an ostrich.
fuck chinese corrupted officials, their daughters, and their daughter's daughters for what they did to their own people
China just became the second Israel.
Prostesting at foreign countries for mentioning Nazi's in a slightly positive way, and requesting Monies and free Submarines from joke-nations such as Germany who ridden with guilt and self-hating.
This sure is proven to be quite effective.
And since China is a pragmatist country, of course they will adopt such effective policy.
The U.S. is on top of the list of countries that China can strongarm, especially with the hundreds of billions dollars worth of U.S. Treasury bills that they own... who knows how much some of the other western nations owe them.
The problem is a major of nation require China's inexpensive goods or another major recession would occur..
Listening to you idiots about which country is what! is funny they make imaginary lines call it a name in you live in this fake circle I'm from france I'm from china
bunch of morons labeling spots like gangsters label street corners who gives 2 fucks where your sorry asses resides since you all be part of it some day its called EARTH..
Imagine........
John Lennon was right.
Shut up or I'm going to kick your sorry ass no matter where it resides...
dude, your so damn awesome!!!!
Here, kiss my ass, idiot
Go fuck yourself cunt.
Chinese here loling at the mainland government. Pathetic, glad that I wasn't born there and that my roots are from Hong Kong and not mainland.
actually this had always been the way our gov done things especially when concerning the (or so-called) separatists,,,and all you guys should know that if you read newspapers,
i dont see the reason it's worth being a new post,,,,
just, no such bashing posts for too long?lol
I always find it funny when a website gets hacked for some reason though. I wish I could do things like that.
So very much like China. Their goverment think it's people are just bunch of sheeps, they have no need to know the truth. Now they telling that every goverment must think in similar way? Man, fuck you mister Chinese President whatever your FUCKING NAME is.
I think it's blatantly obvious that you're making an ignorant comment. You're not even educated enough to know the Chinese president's name, so how can people take your opinion seriously?
"China Tries to Censor Foreign Countries"
Again/Still?
Watch out for Chinese hackers, Sankaku.
I doubt they're any more competent than the pathetic Korean hackers we had a while back...
I [redacted]
the news only show china's good part, but they din't show they shadows~
The Saddest thing is that Everybody on earth knows aaalll about the Shadows part.. But Nobody do nothing... WE NEED GUNDAM POWER RIGH'NOW!!!
China seems downright surprised every time their attempts to censor something so it doesn't pain their country in a negative light overseas gets MORE attention than whatever issue they're trying to censor.
The festival might get a few thousand people interested in the issue. The heavy handed tactics used to try to shut them up make bigger waves than the Uighur problem and that reverberates to MILLIONS hearing about china pulling draconian censorship measures to suppress the knowledge that they're mistreating a minority.
Then they always seem surprised that they get called on trying to censor it.
They should do what we do in the US. Find a sensitive issue that affects a group, when we get called out on it, we "promise to address it" and say "it is such a shame that this is happening," then do absolutely nothing to fix it. We in the US are masters in the art of bullshitting the media, China should learn from us and come up with more believable lies.
Two words fuck them.
They can try and control what goes on inside their borders even though history has proven ttime and time again that it's futile.
But the hell with them trying to say what people watch and read about outside their borders.
amen
A woman leaded a violence in Urumqi, killed thousands of Chinese people there, and made a movie to explain what she did was right. So Chinese government banned this movie. That's it.
This will all stop when China implodes within the next 10 years. You cannot hide your corruption forever.
China is in Asia! Melbourne is in Australia! why cant they mind there own fucking business? I mean threatening a international film festival that's being held outside of their own country, WTF?
And these mother fuckers were supposed to be communists, radicals. What's up with all these conservative policies? These fuckers betrayed the revolution and are now reactionaries. They should be removed from power.
What? Chinese censorship? No way!
we
I'm a Chinese too,i know Chinese is a bullshit,but i love Chinese very much,because i am a fucking CHINESE!
i'm a chinese and i hate china now...
luckily i wasn't born in china xD
These Goddamn Red Commies are becoming a problem. It's time to nuke the fuckers.
I never liked China once even tho Im chinese.
For you Hong Kong people, you guys and girls rule, and I am sorry that you are in the Epic Fail of China. I find Hong Kong to be a cleaner place then China. Also its true, Main Land China, is really crazy, but going after books and movie's outside of China...I have no words for it, my mind draws a blank.
Well later
From America, with LOVE!!
I'd say that our government is weak and sucks at PR management, rather than being headstrong & arrogant. They're too afraid that the publication of these movies would trigger "unrest" & "turmoil" within our state. They should've labeled the incident as terroism & anyone supporting it terrorists, just as USA did with 9/11. They're reluctant to do so because it will make things sound bad & threaten the "stablity" of the nation esp. on & before the 60th anniversary. Had that happened, any sensible Chinese would support the government's stance & denounce movies that praise criminals & terrorists. (If it's about environment & corruption that'd be different, but generally Chinese think that we can manage these issues on our own, and telling the foreigners about that is often viewed as wimpy & sometimes, due to our historical trauma, traitorous) the They did terribly on rallying (or rather, manipulating) the people into believing what they want them to believe, while the western media excels in doing so. Then the only option left for them is banning & censoring.
啧啧
China's arrogant surely not strange to the world, they have a tendency to look down on other country form middle age or sooner than that. That's also explain why they hate Japanese so much, they price being crushed by a nation much smaller then them.
This kind of reminds me of something else. I think there was like a European game company or something and they made a game of some sort depicting the US as the bad guys for once and they got in shit for it or something. Then I they argued back about how some American games freely blow up terrorists and the armies of foreign countries. Well, I guess this would be a milder version of foreign censorship.
When you have the Uighur dissident leader attending that certain Melbourne film festival as a guest of honour, it becomes a protest rather than a exercise of freedom of speech.
So China has every right to complain.
C'mon.
An Independent film festival, it seems to me, can choose it's own guests of honor.
People not running the film festival? They can shut the hell up.
I smell dog meat and wontons on this post.
I smell actual facts from someone who actually bothered to take a look at the other side of the picture
And an arrogant wanton fag.
Even if it was a country at war with China, Chinas actions would still be outright fascist(as in: the use of coercive force in a civil relationship between countries) and frankly illegal. It is a violation of the sovereignty of a nation as well as an offense towards any and all free speech(regardless of country).
