Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata has publicly admitted the Wii’s momentum has slowed and that a failure to deliver any decent games has soured the public to the console.

His statements were made after the company had to announce a 58% drop in net profits and a 43% drop in Wii sales…

Along with the nosediving sales, he frankly admitted the Wii was having difficulties:

“The Wii has lost momentum. We’ve been unable to keep introducing good software, and the favourable mood towards the console has cooled.”

In April he admitted that “the Wii’s position is perilous,” but it seems he has done nothing much in the mean time to rectify matters.

The recent Wii price cut, made in response to the PS3 Slim’s release, did have a positive effect on hardware sales, but this does not disguise the fact that the most notable Wii title of late is nothing but a remake of a 25-year-old Mario game – possibly Nintendo will have to do better than rehashed fitness games and remade “classics” if it wishes to compete with compelling line-ups from Microsoft and Sony…

At least they are aware of this fact.
Pretty much everyone who brought a Wii just has it sitting untouched collecting dust.

They've realized it all along, but never trust what people says in the industry.

Everything they say is in order to give their product a better image. If the big boss gives off a lousy image, people think the product's lousy too.

Now, everyone knows that the Wii isn't exactly doing well lately. By admitting their faults, it's like that they're going to rectify the matter, thus insinuating that there will be improvement (which you don't have to believe of course).

There will be no improvements. They're releasing new consoles in 2011. Possibly late 2010 if they rush it.

I don't see much of a reason to buy a new DS, because the hardware it'll be made with will be coming to smart phones soon.I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo releases more DS models in the mean time.

I guess it's hard to please older gamers who have a hard time getting used to new games.

As I have seen, my friends still prefers the old school Pokémon games, while the kids prefers the hi-tech Platinum game.

Even I have a hard time enjoying Nintendo's newer titles for longer periods. The longest was SSBB, but only for a year, unlike Melee which leasted 3-4 years.

I would say just get the PS3 now since I doubt MS's next console will be out any time soon. Plus the PS3 has Valkyria Chronicles and Uncharted, so it is worth it.

My 360 and PS3 are played a lot, while my Wii sit there doing nothing until I feel like playing Metroid or Zelda.

And I sincerely thought the Wii has potential...

Well now that I think about it, most gamers I know don't like to workout or even move a lot, and most people I know who do workouts have little interest in game consoles... so there you have it.

Yet I really liked DragonBall Z Tenkaichi Budokai 3 (sp?) for the Wii, it really makes you sweat doing all the fighting moves..

Mine didn't last long enough to collect dust and I live in a desert. I got rid of it as soon as I beat Radiant Dawn. That was the only reason I bought it after all. Although I will admit now that the game line up isn't all that bad, especially with Tales of Graces coming out this year. I could see myself getting another one eventually, especially if Tales of Graces makes its way state side.

That is the precise problem with them. Where are all those titles that make Nitendo what is was.

It is really sad to see them not doing well since they are the ones offering the casual and non-gamers the ideal console amongst the 3.

Its plain folly for them to challenge the PS3 and Xbox360 head on.

yup mine is just sitting there after beating Zelda. I think its more related to the laziness of swing around your arms to play certain games. At least some of the more recent games aren't like that.

Yup I sometimes play games for 8-12 hours in one sitting (except for bathroom breaks and getting a drink of water). I doubt I can last that long flailing a nunchuck around nonstop. Me needs a regular controller, yo.

Whenever I play a friend's Wii, I do the same thing. Having played SSB on the Game cube, trying to play it with a Wii controller made me want to put the Wii in a large rocket and shoot it at the moon.

(I wonder if NASA gets rid of crap that way)

Its also because 'novelties' die fast. what console developers don't realize is that games make the console not vice versa. they need a platform which will entice the developers. just take play-station for example. with the ps2 they made the perfectly timed jump to DVD, which resulted in more games being produced on their console as opposed bad choice of cartridge by nintendo. with the PS3 they made somewhat of a premature jump to blue-ray, which is probably the reason why initially more games were produced on 360, and why they are currently doing better now and the future.

I haven't bought a Wii, but I've had a helluva good time at parties where the hosts had one, along with fun "party-type" games.

Watching one of my workmates frantically "milking a cow" - it looked like he was jacking two invisible guys off, one with each hand - made me laugh so hard I fell to the floor.

Mine are played about equal. PS3 one day, 360 the next. Wii, gets a decent amount when a new Metroid, Zelda, or Resident Evil game comes out, but after that it sits there doing nothing.

Well you see, this is how i think console play time works.
360 = Time spent with friends
    PS3 = Time spent alone
Wii = First couple minutes of interest before boredom

So it's obvious what kind of people prefer what kind of console. As not only the games available reflect that, but the fanboys too.
Iunno about you guys but I'd rather play a 4 player game with friends than rub my cock on a single player epic designed to distract you from your pathetic life.

360 = Time with friends? Are you kidding? Ragging on online players via a headset is the most interaction you can get versus any party game a Wii has? You suck, and I pity you. Please die in a fire.

Indeed. I knew it was going to die sooner or later but I still think the lineup is quite enjoyable. I mean, I absolutely loved Super Mario Galaxy, Fire Emblem, Metroid Prime 3, Mario Kart Wii, and even Wii Music. And I'm still wuite looking forward to some of the soon to be released games like New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Tales of Graces, Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Metroid: Other M.

Besides, that's about as much as my allowance can handle.

Strangely enough, 95% of those games you listed are first party games.

Just reinforces the whole idea that the Wii has no decent games.

Why waste money developing for the Wii when people keep buying the same Mario, Zelda, and Metroid shit over and over again as well as WiiFit and WiiSports.

Nintendo should become the next Sega and become a publisher instead.

Publish Mario for PS3 and Xbox 360. That would be grand.

Also sell accessories for its games.

Yeah, that makes sense, considering their consoles have been outselling their all competitors combined. Not to mention the ridiculous profit they get out of it (in that regard, the Wii probably has the PS2 beat by now).

The wii lasted so long because it's a 'family' console and it was cheaper than any of the other 'new' consoles at the time. As opposed to the majority of games on the xbox or 360 the wii has tons of games for the kiddies where parents don't have to feel like they need to monitor their play too much. It is targeted to a much different gamer market than the other consoles.

For me, after I hacked my wii, it became far more useful as an internet terminal and dvd player among other things. So it gets more use than my xbox and ps3.
