Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata has publicly admitted the Wii’s momentum has slowed and that a failure to deliver any decent games has soured the public to the console.
His statements were made after the company had to announce a 58% drop in net profits and a 43% drop in Wii sales…
Along with the nosediving sales, he frankly admitted the Wii was having difficulties:
“The Wii has lost momentum. We’ve been unable to keep introducing good software, and the favourable mood towards the console has cooled.”
In April he admitted that “the Wii’s position is perilous,” but it seems he has done nothing much in the mean time to rectify matters.
The recent Wii price cut, made in response to the PS3 Slim’s release, did have a positive effect on hardware sales, but this does not disguise the fact that the most notable Wii title of late is nothing but a remake of a 25-year-old Mario game – possibly Nintendo will have to do better than rehashed fitness games and remade “classics” if it wishes to compete with compelling line-ups from Microsoft and Sony…
Is there really anything wrong for enjoying the Wii just for the Nintendo games? They are pretty good
You get your money’s worth anyway.
For now, Nintendo wins with their cheap consoles and substantially larger profit margins.
The Wii gets some games with high production values… No More Heroes, Tales of Graces, Monster Hunter 3, and Silent Hill: Shattered Memories come to mind.
Since I enjoy playing games like Muramasa while waiting for other great games like Fragment I don’t care about the sales. Did you ever care about sales the sales of Dreamcast when you were playing games like Ikaruga and Shenmue? If your answer is yes, then you don’t know how to really enjoy videogames.
I was obviously too interested in finding out where sailors hung out in shenmue than the sales of a system. Anyways, I honestly agree that the dreamcast had so many awesome games, it’s a shame that it segas marketing screwed it over.
It’s true SEGA just doesn’t seem to care anymore about a high quality product. They know what the SEGA fanbase wants; Streets of Rage, Guardian Heroes, Alien Soldier, Jet Grind Radio, Shenmue, Shinobi, Panzer Dragoon and last but sure as hell not lease Gunstar Heroes. Some of the best s♥♥t I ever played from SEGA seemingly forgotten by the higher ups of the company because they think it won’t sell. If any of those games get a modern update it’ll sell even if SEGA marking department screws it over because the fans will speak the truth.
Never once in the interview did they say the Wii has “No decent games”. That’s just a phrase auto-generated in video game articles that are not about the PS3. It’s just the logic of Sony’s company whore squad, er, I mean Sankaku Complex.
Just how would you like us to believe it is best translated then?
Iwata: “Wii has lost Momoentum” is all that is needed, and factual for that matter.
As much as I hate to admit it (I’m a Nintendo fangirl, after all) I’ve got to agree. I recently went through a list of RPGs, Strategy RPGs, and other such things to make a list of games to get once I have a wii. I couldn’t even find a dozen games between the five or six genres I searched that weren’t remakes or ports which interested me.
