Princess Robot Bubblegum Scores Critical Hit

princess-robot-bubblegum-tentacle-raep.jpg

The latest DLC episode for Grand Theft Auto IV features a typically biting satire of the less than healthy state of the current anime market in the form of Princess Robot Bubblegum, astutely lampooning just about every genre and even the woeful dubbing so beloved of US anime fans…

You can see the fittingly oppai laden and tentacle laced video below:

Few could fault its grasp of the current state of anime.

The DLC itself, Episodes From Liberty City – The Ballad of Gay Tony, is bought and paid for by Microsoft, so anyone without the Xbox 360 version can just forget about owning it.

there poking fun of how the media veiws anime ,they think its nothing but smut and dirty things.
while the media hates video games as well and the the games there are adds for games that are violent which are advertised for kids.

there poking fun at mainstream media as well as stereotypes. plus its kinda like what midway did with mortal kombat.

I know that you can watch "TV programming" inside the game. So, I take it that this is one of the "commercials".

Poking fun at the mainstream media? Haha, no. This is what the makers of the video actually believe.

They're trying to poke fun of anime, which they know nothing about.

The accurate portrayal that is bullshit? Lol. If Rockstar think they are clever for doing this they can think again because if these stereotypes aren't already obvious to you, you fail regardless. It's like poking fun Loony Toons for being random and funny... Or star wars for being a science fiction movie. Somewhat of a captain obvious effect? To me at least.

Both DLC episodes come out on a stand-alone disk tomorrow as well:

No nipples? I think you're thinking of pre-2000 stuff, with numerous girls who were Barbie-like in their lack of nipples and utterly featureless crotches.

Nowadays they're usually just more careful about positioning so that they could actually conceivably be hidden. Or they could just go ahead and show them, like Kallen's.

    Oh but 2000s means 2000-2009, that's 9 years;

surely they now opt to make DVD sales-boosting stuff with all nipples but this stuff was surely still popular in early 2000s.

    Non-existent nipples being pre-2000?!

    I disagree:

    Rumiko Takahashi's
    Fire Tripper OVA (1985)
    Ranma 1/2 (1989-2002)
    Urusei Yatsura (Lum) (1981-1986)
and probably in her other works too.

    Bubblegum Crisis OVA (1987-1991)

    Tenchi Muyo! series (1992,1995 & 1997)

    Just to name a few.
There's more out there from the 80's and 90's than you might think. I agree though, it's not like today where any female in almost ALL Anime no matter how young or old shows nipples. Sometimes that's not a good thing! ^_^'

I don't know, it's arguably more of parody of the 80s and 90s stuff, if it was moeblob it would be about kawaii schoolgirls.

What a lot of fans don't realize is there has always been moeblob stuff, but far less shows made it over to the west.

Now we have instant fansubs, almost every show coming out is subbed and ready for you. so obviously we get a lot more of the crap.

    23:42 28/10/2009 # ! Neutral (0)

Lol, that's what will happen when you're too ignorant to think that the 90's only have stuffs like NGE and the 2000's ONLY have stuffs like K-on.

Stop using the word "all" when you only know >10% of it.

It's true that not all of it has that style, but there are patterns and trendy styles that are used more than othersevery generation. It's just the way the industry evolves over time. I can guess an anime's release date within a couple of years just by seeing the art because of it, and I'm pretty artistically challenged so I guarantee someone with more talent for this sort of thing can point out things in better detail.

True words indeed. All things go in trends and the current scaling trend happens to be moe type anime. So? There are plenty of non moe anime, which I wont need to name, starting from 2000 and onward. Art, such as paintings and painting style went through phases as well.
80s, 90s were heavily focused on mecha anime yet has it stayed that way? No. Things change as the times change and moe is the 'in' thing. So if you dont like it, sit it out, or ride the wave if you do.

Sure, there are a lot of moe moe anime these days and its much more commonly publicized. Most people look to anime for its entertainment purposes, thus moe and slice of life sells the most, generating profits. Companies go where there are profits. Easy connection. But its not only moe anime, and never has been nor will probably never will be. There are action/philosophic/horror/romance etc. etc. genres of anime out there, but the more complicated they get, the smaller the audience target.

Simply view animation industry as a pyriamid in mind, with moe on the bottom with its largest variety and more complicated philosophic/political anime at the top, such as Ghost in the Shell (of which type, there are few).

People can bitch and always will, but to state that the industry is now totally moe, is a overgeneralization but one that you could obviously debate to be true or false. I would argue false as I have stated before.

I love Rurouni Kenshin but.. maybe no thanks. I think I had enough watching two fighters paused in the middle of their fight to talk about their past and agenda for 20 minutes only to finish it with a single quick flash slash. (And there we have ppl bitching about Bleach season 2 had too much dialogue instead of fighting)

I'll say bring back Samurai Champloo and Basilisk (with new characters maybe).

Gritty and cool? Maybe. But anime's always been perverted and over the top. Futuristic anime isn't nearly as common as it was. This looks to me like it's more inspired by Armatage III, Dirty Pair... stuff like that. I wouldn't really call this a satirical representation of the "current" market. The only current anime this reminds me of is Queen's Blade. Then again, we're talking about the US market, aren't we?

Besides, nobody likes huge racks anymore. Petanko is IN.
