The World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Report 2009 has ranked Japan as being the developed nation with the least amount of gender equality, ranking it below such nations as China in a report which claims to “assess countries on how well they are dividing their resources and opportunities among their male and female populations.”
The rest of the report throws up some odd rankings…
1. Iceland
2. Finland
3. Norway
4. Sweden
5. New Zealand
6. South Africa
7. Denmark
8. Ireland
9. Philippines
10. Lesotho
11. Netherlands
12. Germany
13. Switzerland
14. Latvia
15. United Kingdom
16. Sri Lanka
17. Spain
18. France
19. Trinidad & Tobago
20. Australia
Scores range from 0 to 1, and “can roughly be interpreted as the percentage of the gender gap which has been closed.” The full report can be examined on the World Economic Forum’s site.
The presence of Scandinavian countries at the top of the list should surprise nobody, but a ranking of sixth for the country with some of the highest rates of sexual violence against women in the world immediately calls into question the criteria used.
Not even making the top 20, the US placed 31st and Canada 25th.
Japan’s score has improved 25 places to 75th on list since 2008, but it is still ranked lowest amongst all major developed nations by a substantial margin.
Even China managed to place 60th, despite being a nation where in some rural areas women are still bought and sold by marriage brokers, and where factory owners openly boast of preferring female employees as being more tractable.
The report is also scathing of other Asian nations, with Islamic countries unsurprisingly dominating the lowest levels of the ranking as hard as they dominate their female populace.
However, Singapore manages only 83rd place, and South Korea only manages 115th, barely above the likes of Iran and Saudi Arabia. Not far in fact from Yemen, placed dead last at 134th.
A report which manages to produce such questionable rankings certainly deserves to be treated with scepticism…

Wait, am I missing something?
Last time I checked men did better in every job out there, so it's only natural that men are worth more than women in current society, and especially considering that the world is overpopulated right now, so the main use of a woman (making children) has lost it's importance.
Gender equality is the modern religion, it's bullshit based on flawed concepts and ideologies.
Maybe you should check again, asshole.
Low gender equality in U.S., alright.
This is what MRAfags actually believe.
He never pointed out what the "flaws" in all religions are.
-1
And not a word on WHAT gender EXACTLY prevails in quantity. Male? Female?
Equality is also derived from order, stablity, religion, and cultural origins. IF the scandivanian tradition was to rape and pillage then how the hell did they get to the top?
Simple. They kicked themselves in the ass to change..and size doesn't matter if the whole country urges to change.
Whatever the reason they might have. Change is something that can be done nationally.
equality is just a word from Latin
not From English.
LoL
I take it you are refering to the Vikings when you talk about our tradition of rape and pillage? Bear in mind that Finland didn't even have Vikings, and I don't think there were many of them in Sweden either. It was mostly a Norwegian and Danish thing, and Iceland largely consists of decendants from Norwegian and Danish Vikings, so yeah. However, an important misinterpretation by the rest of the world that I'd like to clarify; Not all of us to be Vikings, and not all of the Vikings used to go on voyages, raping and pillaging. I otherwise agree with your statement though. :-) Personally, I'm named after a Norwegian Viking King, which I do admit I think is kinda cool. ^^
*used to be Vikings*
No suprise that all the scandinavian countries are in the top ten because women seem to have more rights than men here -.-
like some people said above me, women pretty much have more rights than men here in Scandinavia...
Malaysia is 101st.
>o<
I can understand why China is ranked above Japan.
Japan represents the old, traditional China where women are considered nothing else than furniture, along with nations like Taiwan and South korea, who are also heavily influenced by the feudal Chinese Culture. China itself was also like this before the Communist Revolution, just watch movies like "The Red Latern" about wealthy men and their bunch of concubines etc.
China is ranked above Japan because of Communism, where Gender Equality is enforced by a dictatorship. Everyone has to work in a communist system - no exceptions. So women will of course gain power and rights through their financial contributions in the family.
Also, even Mao himself said back then, that 'Women shall bear the other half of the heaven'. So it's nothing to wonder about.
In fact, Chinese women in general are pretty bossy and non-traditional nowadays. There are only either dominant tsundere, expierienced amazones or caring onee-sama types of women in China. No submissive moe-blobs like in more traditional asian countries.
You, sir, are fucking right.
Long live China.
long live the CCP.
Long live Communism
Long live Socialism.
Yet the moe blobs are desired. As the saying goes, American salary, Chinese cook...
Wow i live in Latvia dint know my country is ranked so high xD
Lol lost 4 places :D
YAY AUSTRALIA... even though 20th... still kicks like 100 other countries...
Eh. It's not about the rate of sexual violence, but how it is handled by authority. So a surprise that the US, where rape is considered a "pre-existing condition" for insurance purposes (http://huffpostfund.org/stories/2009/10/rape-victims-choice-risk-aids-or-health-insurance), manages the top 100.
Utter bullshit
I live in Finland, and I must say that it deserves the second place. Equality is greatly valued here, almost to the point where it's annoying.
That's because you have Feminazi
in your country .
Nordic countries ftw. And South Africa. wth. There's some weird ass countries in the top 20. But I guess people should first check where the numbers come from before interpreting them the way the want to.
Quite funny to think that these white Asians have something in common w/c are very significant just like in this case. In Japan, women are never treated as equal to men, mostly they are treated as a sex figure. That also goes to S. Korea except the sex part. And also to China except the sex part too.
Mind the gap.
>>Singapore
>>83
LOL
Finland is second because here women are more equal then men these days :D
Notice that as gender equality increases birth rate declines...
Wrong
Notice how Philippines got up there, 12th highest birth rate in the world.
And I doubt that the countries under it have higher birthrates.
Damn... I'm surprised my country (Latvia) made it into the top. Guess things ain't as bad as they seem (at least in this regard).
Sri Lanka? Really?
Had to throw in another Anti-China comment, eh, Sankaku Complex?
Had to throw in another The Truth of China comment, eh, Sankaku Complex?
fixed
Fuck yeah Iceland.
Whos that in the picture?
Why am I not surprised that the Philippines is in the list?
because it is obvious. Duh!
I didn't see this coming, that we finns are in 2nd place. Because in some professions, it's not even rare that women have about 15% lower salary than men (the difference used to be about 20% so we have improved a little, but still...)
where the hell is Indonesia?
Wheres Canada?
My thoughts exactly. Canada does not have huge gender gap issues, and has improved in that regard over the years. At the very least, Canada should be 15, not 25.
But given that South Africa is 6, I have a strong feeling that the methods used to gain such statistics are very strange.
I stop caring about the gender gap along time ago. mainly because its waste of energy to complain about. So what if women have more unfair restrictions than men. Men have unfair restrictions to be lazy. You only have one life, every human being has a right to be able to freely choose whatever they desire even if it means stealing and killing. Its there choice, and no person should tell them they can't do this and that. Its your own rights, not the government or society pressures, as a animal and human to live freely. when I look at Eskimo tribes I never seen so much freedom and equality in my life. Mainly because its to cold to be bullshitting around on petty issues such as race and gender. Seriously who cares if someone tells you cant do something because you're a woman, tell them to go fuck themselves and do it anyways.
no wonder there's so many feminist
you got a problem w/ that, buddy?!!! >:-(
yes.
eat your Braindead Brain.

Ufffff.... nº 17 and OVER France, this is a bit good. My country is not really popular when it comes to equality (mostly in salaries)
Interesting, NZ on top of AUS....
They should be on par
