Ghost in the Shell Live Action Going Strong

Masamune Shirow’s legendary cyberpunk franchise Ghost in the Shell has had its Hollywood adaptation in the works for some time now, with the latest news being that Dreamworks has assigned Laeta Kalogridis as lead writer.
Seasoned writer Kalogridis is taking over from Jamie Moss, who was originally set to adapt the popular Japanese franchise to a more western market.
She has written scripts for a number of Hollywood films, and is also involved with the Hollywood adaptation of Battle Angel Alita, apparently with few disasters to her credit (although she did help write a Tomb Raider movie).
Also involved in this project are Avi Arad, Ari Arad and Steven Paul of Seaside Entertainment. Avi Arad, formerly of Marvel, has been involved with many of Marvel’s TV and movie adaptations, including such titles as Spider Man and The Hulk.
Dreamworks has planned this adaptation as a “Live Action 3D”, presumably implying a heavy CG component, just as with the anime and even manga versions.
Fans will undoubtedly be watching with bated breath to see how Hollywood handles this major franchise and whether another embarrassingly successful rape ensues.
With such titles as Ghost in the Shell and Battle Angel Alita in the works (and less promisingly, Akira), it seems Hollywood may now be doing more to further the fortunes of anime as an art form than the industry itself, which appears lately to have devolved into obsessively cannibalising an increasingly sterile set of schoolgirl themed titles for the sake of a narrow niche market… Even Hollywood has a long way to sink before it reaches the depths of the moe boom.

I disagree, Stephen Spielberg is the Producer last I heard, He's already an accomplished sci-fi filmmaker, and he also did the movie, A.I., which had many of the same themes as GitS as far as the nature of the relationship between Artificial Intelligence and Sentience.
I admit there's still a chance of horrible failure but I'm slightly optimistic for this one.
We'll our fingers crossed... but I think for most of us fans even if it's good... because of the differences we'll probably won't like it. Hard when you're used to a story and you see it with changed names, look, language etc.

Well there's a slight chance they might not completely screw it up.
As long as they stick with a SAC style story line and avoid butchering it in the name of being politically correct they might not screw it up.
Rape or no rape, this kind of stuff does pour huge amounts of money into the anime industry. You can certainly choose to ignore the final product, but hope that it continues so that studios can come up with better products.

Let me just add that the James Cameron Battle Angel Alita project has been scrapped the last I checked. Ghost In The Shell is my favorite series, and I hate to say this but this is most likely going to be an ''Epic Fail'' They need to leave this in the hands of where it originated from! The problem is that we as Americans just can't come up with our own ideas so we have to take what isn't ours. Take Cowboy Bebop The Movie for example with Keanu Reeves - another ''Epic Fail'' If these ideas ever see the light of day, they will just be dark marks/shit stains on shows that are perfect they way they are. GHOST IN THE SHELL ROCKS!!! so I'm definitely keeping my eye out for this. I hope it won't be a disappointment like the other Hollywood adaptation/remake. although with its track record, not so hopeful.
btw, I heard that instead of setting in Japan, it'll set in Hong Kong, but will the story still be about Japan's National Publice Safety Commission, Section 9? Cuz it would be a real bitch if it's not even be about them and instead creating some other counterpart.

Why do those fools in Hollywood think American fans want to see a dumbed down westernized version of a Japanese cartoon? You can bet their just going to give us two hours of nonstop gun play with a little simplified philosophy, just enough not to offend the bible thumpers. And not even the redeeming benefit of any tits so they can get a lousy PG13 rating, the killer of great movies, just look what happened to Blade, two R rated movies, excellent, one PG13 rated, garbage.
Lol, but GitS already have hollywood adaptation. It's called Blade Runner.
Blade Runner came before GitS, and it's quite different in many aspects.
Obvious joke is obvious. Settings may be diffrent, but both of them gives similar feelings. You could even say that Blade Runner is spiritual ancestor of GitS.
Maybe G.I.T.S movie might go for a G/PG rating?

Ghost in the Shell would probably make a decent live action movie, but I don't see what purpose it would serve.

And why would we need a "live-action" crap anyway? This is definetly not for the fans, just for the people who never heard of gits in the first place and they probably won't like it either. I wouldn't mind a bible black live action if it wouldn't be for the fact that they will hire ugly, bad acting porn stars. Most of the girls in Bible black have attitudes that American actresses can preform faithfully, being manipulative whores that will fuck anyone and everyone for their own personal gain.

However, it suffers A LOT from the "acting".
Asian actors are really just horrible at times. They might stick true to the reactions of the manga, but in a live-action movie its just unnatural.
That would mean the young animators would be over payed for doing their job.
