Ghost in the Shell Live Action Going Strong

Masamune Shirow’s legendary cyberpunk franchise Ghost in the Shell has had its Hollywood adaptation in the works for some time now, with the latest news being that Dreamworks has assigned Laeta Kalogridis as lead writer.
Seasoned writer Kalogridis is taking over from Jamie Moss, who was originally set to adapt the popular Japanese franchise to a more western market.
She has written scripts for a number of Hollywood films, and is also involved with the Hollywood adaptation of Battle Angel Alita, apparently with few disasters to her credit (although she did help write a Tomb Raider movie).
Also involved in this project are Avi Arad, Ari Arad and Steven Paul of Seaside Entertainment. Avi Arad, formerly of Marvel, has been involved with many of Marvel’s TV and movie adaptations, including such titles as Spider Man and The Hulk.
Dreamworks has planned this adaptation as a “Live Action 3D”, presumably implying a heavy CG component, just as with the anime and even manga versions.
Fans will undoubtedly be watching with bated breath to see how Hollywood handles this major franchise and whether another embarrassingly successful rape ensues.
With such titles as Ghost in the Shell and Battle Angel Alita in the works (and less promisingly, Akira), it seems Hollywood may now be doing more to further the fortunes of anime as an art form than the industry itself, which appears lately to have devolved into obsessively cannibalising an increasingly sterile set of schoolgirl themed titles for the sake of a narrow niche market… Even Hollywood has a long way to sink before it reaches the depths of the moe boom.

My, God...When well it end...this rape of things that are good.
*raping of things that are good, by Follywood.
Ghost in the Shell was already raped when they remade the movie with 3D effects.
Ghost in the Shell 2nd animation movie was indeed overdone and worst of the franchise.
However GitS plot and setting is actually more like action movies Hollywood has done already, and therefore less likely to be a fail. Unlike Yankee DragonballZ.
Fuck that fucking fuck of a fucking fuck fuck fuckityfuck fuck.... FUCK!!!
(Translation: I strongly disliked Dragon Ball Evo.)
never watched the anime nor play the game but it sounds cool so i won't miss this ^^
Darkrockslizer:
That is why I hope this goes well. There is 80% less than usual that Hollywood can fuck up this time. If the writer keeps the story true to the anime, and they don't sex-up Kusanagi like they do EVERY female action character in the west, then I will be (somewhat) pleased.
I could be good, even really good. But probably they'll fuck it up, anyway...
i wish they could get at lest one right. why in the hell don't they at lest let some of the fans or the people who actually worked on the manga and anime in on it to help.
why hire your own fucking writers.
There to cheap to pay the original people who worked on it.
Even though the people they hire are probably getting paid more.
Typical corporate thinking.
We call them Writer Unions.
Unions: Job security by fucking everyone else over.
They should at least hire dedicated fans who only want the best for the series. I can't stand watching interviews with the cast and crew of a Hollywood movie based off a comic, game, or anime/manga. They always say what big fans they are of the original series which is complete bullshit. As if they ever watched/read/played, let alone heard of, the original series. A true fan would never want to be a part of something that rapes the series.
That's right. I know if I were interested in investing a crapload of money in a project that needs to make a profit, I would want to hire a bunch of serious and committed fans, who would spend weeks arguing over minor points and spend half their time sulking if their lame suggestions were shot down.
Fans as creative geniuses, what could go wrong?
General public making movies is a surefire way to make a trainwreck.
the end of man is over , the age of vile orc has began
Actually, the age of vile orcs would be fun.
We can have a WAAAGH! every week! We don't need to do anything and worry about anything other than stomping, chopping, Choppaz, Shootaz, Squigs and WAAAGH!
Needs more Dakka.
"Heavy CG?" I pray to every currently recognized deity not to let this look like speed racer.
This might be a success if they shy away from playing up the "sexy woman with a gun" theme and highlight some of the things that set GitS apart from other "sexy woman with a gun" anime. The ramifications of the society and culture of the anime's setting, as well as highlighting aspects of how it differs from our own (aside from the obvious cyborg thing). You know, like a number of the better films based on Philip K. Dick's works.
Something tells me this is going to be worse than Johnny Mnemonic and Tank Girl the movie combined. ;_;
<<never!!!! lets start an anti hollywood anime army!
YES, You shall gather the army, while I gather the weapons. Who's with us!
meh...
^ You meant "Me" or "meh"?
If it's "meh", you FUCKING HOLLYWOOD NUB

So we have weapons and people now! so whats next?
This does not look promising at all. You called for soldiers but the only ones who enlisted are sheeps?
Meh...
ANOOOOONNN!!!! WHAT IZ YOUR PROFESSION!?!?!!!?!!!1
Uh... a FAPPING FAPPER!!! Sir!
How about Japan makes a movie with a Hollywood-size budget.
That would mean the young animators would be over payed for doing their job.
Like 20th Century Boys? The entire trilogy.
Isn't that supposed to be amazing?
It is amazing.
However, it suffers A LOT from the "acting".
Asian actors are really just horrible at times. They might stick true to the reactions of the manga, but in a live-action movie its just unnatural.

This will take more than two years.
too early to hope for anything.
Then I will start building my giant robots to destroy them!
Japan is already on it.
could definitely be good ghost in a shell is one adaptation hollywood would easily be capable of making.
If they were willing to, yes. But you'll never see them taking adaptations of funny Chinese cartoons seriously. Never.
I'm just waiting for hollywood to start raping moe part of anime too.
Hollywood doesn't do moe, they do sexy. They think that Americans won't watch anything that's not violent, sexy, or filled with unfunny overused jokes. The few times Hollywood does something cute it usually involves animals in a kids movie.
Let's just hope that Hollywood doesn't try something new and make a live action adaption of a moe anime. God knows that American girls CANNOT act moe. They can try to act tsundere at the most but it usually just comes off as bitchy.
+1
Hollywood shouldn't touch the Ghost in the Shell franchise. Every single live action Hollywood adaptation wasn't good.
You are not wrong there.
Actually the most japanese adaptions aren't good as well.
What happens in 2D stays in 2D.
