anyone who thought FFVIII was terrific has to have been a young kid when they played the game. any person with a shred of discernment or even borderline maturity recognized that game as totally broken, with slovenly storytelling, insufferable characters, and a nonsense plot.

were you a little bit older you'd have played FFVI or CT first, and realized how empty and bereft FFVIII was.

I'd expect at least ONE 'Mother' game in there. And, come on, people, Phantasy Star didn't suck THAT much! Heck, one of the Online versions deserves a spot, at the very least.

i tend to question those who swear the SNES FFs had far superior storytelling. they must have been really young and/or lack any ability to judge writing if they think that the storytelling has gotten more slovenly, more insufferable, and more nonsensical.
though really it usually comes down to blind sakaguchi love and attempt to sound oldschool hardcore.
and before you even try, yes i am old enough to have played the older FFs, i'm old enough to have played a lot of RPGs that predated the FFs as contrary to popular younger gamer belief rpgs aren't japanese in origin and Sakaguchi didn't create jrpgs. i'm just old enough to not get sucked into blind nostalgia worship.

Persona 4 was most certainly awesome, but I didn't expect it to get fourth place. Kudos to Atlus.

Maybe Chrono Trigger could've been a bit higher on the list. While I'm at it, I will give Chrono Cross an honorable mention.

I've been with FF since the original on the NES, but 10? Really? Lame characters + lame plot + lame villain + the beginning of the end of Nobuo's involvement = success, apparently. There are much better entries in the FF series, let alone rpgs as a whole =/

Shut up, FFX is the best game I've ever played in my life so far.
It IS accurate, because FFX is such a masterpiece.
World, music, and gameplay being on top.
FFVII is good, but no voices made it a little less good for me...

I do hate you now. That game was crap. FF VIII should be on the list. Although I do understand why X is there. It's the second most selling FF game after 7 and has the best FF stort IMHO.

FFX gets no.1 because most of the voters are newfags to the rpg genre, there are many titles missing from the list; namely xenogears and legend of the dragoon. Many nubs compare graphics and sound with older games, when really you should only compare the story/gameplay.

i believe that ffviii was one of the most underrated games. i think it should be on the list within the top 5.

That list is an epic fail. Where are the FFVI and Suikoden 2, they took two of the greatest villains of all time out of the list.
And Fallout 3... thats the worst insult ever. How can anyone put Fallout 3!?!?!?! 1 and 2 are awesome... but 3?!?!?! C´mon!!!

FF8 and Suikoden 2 should've been there for sure. As well As Deus Ex and Oblivion (but it's prolly Japan oriented). But F3 lolwut, lousiest RPG ever, well maybe after Crap Effect...

ffx. ugh. that game is a fail for many reasons (just to name one: tidus). then again, it's also awesome at the same time...

FFX can't be at the top, it's good, but way too easy >_> FFVIII should be on the top 3, and disgaea should be at least on the list, it's one of my best games i've played. Of course, star ocean should be there as well. About the tales of saga...they are good, but not that good. And onitke...how can yo say you liked X-2 better than X, that game was an insult for the FF saga, it wasn't even made by square enix ¬¬

There will always be dispute in which one is the best Final Fantasy. in the end it's a matter of preference. You can't tell other people what they should think is the best.

Please go die now. The game is the best of 2008. i never jumped on the FF train, so I can happily stay out of arguing about which game in the series is better, as I haven't got a clue. Skies of arcadia should be so fucking on that list!! and fallout 3 hmm it should ahve said fallout 1 or 2 mabye but not 3. but they asked japanese so most are jrpg ofcourse and no oldschool western rpgs on there ;/ but the ebst rpg coming is Dragon age:origins!!!! and mass effect 2

FF8 was an incredible piece of technology. Everything up until disk 4 was incredible and innovative for its time as far as I'm concerned. I've heard too many people whine about the draw system to believe they have anything worth saying about 8 without it being shallow and useless. I do not believe it should be #1, however it definitely deserves a place in the teens at the very least.

FF8 was beautifully put together, with the exception of the a-bit-too-convenient-wrap-up in disk 4 and horrendous final villain. Even that was cool in its own way, but a tad cheesy.

i start rpg-ing with FF8...i must admit it was great at first...that is until u play suikoden 2/chrono trigger/ff9/xenogears...

You didn't need fancy graphics and deep character customization back then... all you needed was quests, a decent group of characters with skills which complimented each other, and location, location, location.

True. It's also pretty nonsensical to say Game A is better than Game B. for example, I'd say Suikoden II has one of the best storylines in console RPGs ever, same with Xenogears, which at that time was really something different, but I enjoyed the gameplay say in FFX more (which HAS the best storytelling in all FF-games so far...and damn I almost cried in one scene, but I did that in FFVI too. So...hm...). So which game is better?

(Dragon Quest games however, I will never understand...*yawn*)

It was a 2006 Famitsu reader poll for top 100 games. You really won't expect western gamers to understand a JP ranking. There's a lot of JP games they've never played, and they'll end up whining with things like "Waah, where's my Halo?". A game called Machi(1998) was #5, and it got a TV series because of its reception. A related game to it released this generation is called 428, which got a perfect review in Famitsu. Type-Moon liked it enough to create Canaan.
