Bayonetta Scores 100%, PS3 Port “Inferior” to Xbox 360

bayonetta-posing.jpg

Bayonetta has been awarded full marks (40/40) by top gaming rag Famitsu, but only for the Xbox 360 original. Even Famitsu feels obliged to point out the bungled nature of Sega’s PS3 port, giving it a piffling 38/40.

The reviewers point out how “unfortunate” it is that the PS3 version enjoys noticeably less gorgeous visuals than the Xbox 360 version.

Good as it may be, many are doubting whether an exagerrated 100% score is really appropriate.

Pointedly, whilst overseas games media heaped praise upon recently released PS3 flagship title Uncharted 2 as being a paragon of gaming virtue, Famitsu only saw fit to award it 37 points, less than the defective port of Bayonetta, for a title many acclaim as a gaming milestone.

The significant difference of course being that Uncharted 2’s Japanese release was very low key as the title is not expected to sell well in the Japanese market, whereas Platinum has expended a considerable amount on advertising Bayonetta with Famitsu (below you can see the top of their enormous preview article on Famitsu.com) and others…

The superior Xbox 360 version of Bayonetta is available now, as is the loser PS3 version.

That's been a problem ever since she came to the national stage back in '08. Exactly.

    Comment by Anonymous

There's a 2 year difference in development between Sigma 2 and NG 2, though. In general most cross-console games have a slight graphical advantage on 360.

    Comment by Anonymous

Agreed. While the PS3 has a much more advanced CPU, the 360 has more memory. So for many multi-system games released at the same time, the textures tend to look better. That being said, given enough time, even better visuals can be achieved on the ps3 (IE Sigma2). For the ps3 fanboys, just wait. They'll patch it like they did Ghostbusters.

In what, if any, way does the 360 have more memory than ps3? The hard drives of both system is at 250GB, and Blue Ray discs hold much more memory than that of HD-DVD = the ability to use higher resolution of textures.

    anon fail

its all due to Sega poor port that ps3 version looks bad

Nice work on being a retard there anon. He means random access memory, you know, the kind that is actually used when you play the game. While you could put higher res textures on a bluray, you'd be long dead before the damn thing has managed to load them given the shitty performance of bluray for anything but sequential reads.

When people talk about 'memory' in relations to electronics, most of the time they are referring to the Random Access Memory(a.k.a RAM), and not the storage memory...

    Comment by Anonymous

    lol anon fanboy fail

    Comment by Anonymous

When last I checked, both had the same amount of total ram. Just one console has it in two pools and the other has it in one pool.

    Comment by Anonymous

True, the systems both have 512MB RAM. The PS3 splits it down the middle with 256MB for the system and 256MB for the video. The 360 has one large 512MB pool of memory that it pulls from and 10MB of dedicated eDRAM.

The way it appears to me is the 360 uses shared memory like what you find on a laptop. Since the PS3 has dedicated video memory, it has to work within that limit. If anyone knows whether or not the PS3 can tap into the system memory for extra VRAM, please correct me.

Frankly, as a PC gamer, I don't care which version is better but I believe the culprit is a combination of both hardware differences and rushed porting. As I said before, just wait for a patch.

    Comment by Anonymous

Despite the PS3's memory being split it also has to deal with it's bloated OS which can pull available resources away from running applications when needed. Currently it uses 52 megs of RAM which to Sony's credit has been reduced since launch but only by 4 megs. By comparison the Xbox uses 32 megs of RAM for it's OS.

    Comment by Anonymous

most 360 games are usually superior graphically compared to their PS3 counterpart. That doesn't mean the platform itself is lacking horsepower. PS3 is just harder to program. And it doesn't help that most multiplatform games lead on 360 (as in making the 360 version first then port it to PS3.. which doesn't allow the game to leverage the exotic nature of PS3 hardware). There are some good multiplatform engine (like epic UT engine or Capcom MT engine and potentially the new Cryengine) but I believe Platinum Games use their own engine which is made for 360 only without any consideration for PS3.

A bad port is a bad port. PS3 versions of multi-platform games have shown that they can be just as good or better. Whenever we see a big difference on either side the blame falls on the developer that handled the port.

"In multiplat games, the textures tend to look better on the 360"

Umm, no. It's because the game was developed for the 360 and then "copypasted" to the PS3. The 360 is easier to develop for, so many developers choose it.

The game looks best on the system it was originally developed on. That's it. Not because the 360 has "more memory". Games developed on the PS3 look better on it than the 360. That's all there really is to it.

QFT. also, hot anime bayonetta is hot.

    Comment by Anonymous

Actually it is because the 360 has more available memory. If you "copypasted" the game to the PS3 when it does have less available memory due to it's memory being split and it's OS using more memory than the 360 then something has to give. In order to run something that's made to run with more available RAM something has to be reduced to fit within the smaller available amount.

No, whenever we see a big difference, blame falls on whoever makes the console that isn't "ours". If that version is worse, it's because that console sucks. If that version is better, it's because that console maker bribed the game developer to make it worse on "your" console. Or something. This fanboy tard logic is hard to follow sometimes.

    Comment by Anonymous

Then in all modesty shall i explain what is to follow, for you,who is yet pure of all this fanboï corruption....:

    Ps3 fanboys:this game suck!!
(said because, even if the game rocks,it does looks better on the "enemies" territory.)

    Xbox360 fanboys:this game rocks!
(because it is graphically better than the ps3 version,it will be definitely the BEST no matter how sucky the game can be.)

For more example see how the "best tales of" named vesperia has fallen to be the "worst to date" when xbox fanboys realized there would be no "patch" or dlc including the extra content.
or how final fantasy stopped looking so shiny when it's xbox360 port was announced.
(and at the same time stopped being "overrated" on the xbox fanboï side)

Technically no. Sigma is due to its coming out much later, and Sony often demanding that later "no-longer-exclusive" ports have some extras to make the time lost worthwhile.

Games that initially come out as multiplatform more often than not show favor to whichever system the series was primarily developed on, which generally works out to be the 360 since it's still easier and much more familiar to work with.
