After looking at both candidates, and the series they come from, I can't help but feel indifferent. The thought of this saimoe being pointless did cross my mind, no hard feelings for those who followed it.
Well, it's just a bunch of votes. Not sure they vote because it's the character they like, or because they hate the other one, or because they just hate this one a little bit less, or just don't care altogether.
And when it comes to popular votes, even One Piece will win over any day. And the same people have voted for Taiga. It's as simple as that.

Total number of votes depends on the opponents in different matches. If it is an easy win, many more busy people won't bother to vote. If it will be a tight race, they get out and vote (sometimes many times).

You guys should know that Korea invaded this tournament right at the end ruined it. Yui actually won had it not been for the Koreans voting nearly 3 to 1 for Taiga and adding another 400 votes to the total.
