Japan’s Sex Gap: 25% Now “Middle-Aged Virgins”

“Middle-aged virgins,” men whose only sexual activity is onanism, are being highlighted as a major problem in Japanese society, with their numbers burgeoning even as youthful sexual activity increases, creating a “sexual bipolarisation.”
Some data indicates as many as 24.3% of males aged 30-35 are virgins, a statistic which seems to have been worsening, and these men are overwhelmingly poor, leading some to suggest female expectations play a role.
It seems that although the average age of a Japanese person’s sexual experience continues to decrease, at the same time a “sex divide” is ensuring some men remain isolated from the company of women, writes economist and author Takashi Kadokura.
Typically, sexual encounters at school are said to be ones where the female takes no great interest in income or prospects, but once into college and the workplace Japanese women suddenly become much more concerned about a partner’s potential as a source of income, the so-called “three highs”: high height, high academic qualifications, and high income.
A small-scale survey supports this notion: 73.9% of those with annual incomes of less than $20,000 had no partners, whilst only 33.3% of men with incomes of from $90-120,000 lacked partners.
The same survey suggested these poorer men could or would not use prostitutes; 85.5% of the below $20,000 group had never used a brothel, whilst only 37% of men with incomes from $90,000 to $120,000 had never visited such an establishment, itself a rather disturbing figure.
These poorer men are increasingly freeters and NEETs, and with their incomes generally remaining low throughout their lives, rather than peaking in their 40s and 50s as with regular salarymen, Japan may be forming a virgin underclass whose only access to sex and female companionship is through AV and ero-manga.
On the other hand, one of the many such surveys of single women found that the “cut-off line” for marriage for 46% of women was $40,000 a year, with 29% demanding $60,000.
However, 2007 government statistics indicated there are only 2,544,900 employed bachelor men with incomes over $40,000 in the whole country, meaning millions of “excess” women are present hunting for the tiny number of high-income men they consider eligible, whilst the rest are left with only the prospect of fantasies.
The obvious inference is that the major reason the poorer, average men are unable to find partners is because Japanese women are busy chasing dreams of wedding the handful of men with high incomes…

The funny thing about what your saying is that it's not a good comparison at all. Men who -know- they can't get a cream of the crop woman will settle for less ( a lot of times much less), and her income won't matter in either case. On the other hand, women seem to chase only their perfect guy looks wise (even if they don't believe they can get, and keep one), and if he doesn't have looks he -better- have money(to say nothing of the fatass middleaged men who catch themselves beautiful model looking women -because- they have money). in all honestly, i wouldn't care as much if women put looks over heart, but the stats show they want money more than heart and that I can't let go. I'm not the greatest looking guy, I don't really know actually, but looks are in the eye of the beholder. What I see as beautiful is different from what someone else sees as beautiful. Personally, yes attractiveness is on my list for what I want in a woman, but it's not on top of the list. 1. heart, 2. brains, 3. looks. Money isn't even in the equation, and I don't think it should be. I'd trade everything i have down to the penny if I got long-lasting love for it. Looks, though, can play a larger part in adding to that love than money can... and even more than that, what's in your partners mind adds to love (so just clarifying, by brains i don't just refer to intelligence. it's not really about the degree of education...)

But this is about the stats in this article, right? The stats don't agree with what you're saying. I wouldn't say it's "Materialism" so much as 2 factors are occuring simultainiously:
#1 as 'Womens Lib' killed the traditional "Housewife" role women are instructed by 'media' and their magazines to "Have it all"- they were don't 'settle' for emotional security or stability anymore- it's about "Having it all".
#2 as Men have become increasingly 'shunned' or rebuffed by these young women (in #1) - they simply have no need to excel or prove anything beyond 'basic survival' needs. If men don't have familys they virtually have NO Over-head! (minus their living expensives)
Result: In 10 years you will have 40 year old men who are still themselves and never needed to change for anyone and might even manage to save some money. You will have 40 year old women whom has since become a 'Declining asset' cause all the 30 & 20 year old women will steal the 'desirable males'.
If a man's wealth is his ability to Earn a living and a Women's is in her appearance and ability to produce children - The Male WINS, cause he can start investing money today and in 10 years have a 'nest egg' and make his money work for him well into his middle-age & senior years and BUY (or Trade?) sex with 20 year old hotties...

@Chris It's true that the majority of men suffer from prostate cancer, but it's also true that it rarely develops into fatal, or even noticeable condition in a good potion of the affected people. Many people die without even realizing they have it.
