Just when it seemed only generic moe and giant robot anime had any chance of attaining blockbuster status, the combined sales of the Bakemonogatari Blu-ray and DVD attained a staggering 44,000 in their first week, beating even K-ON!’s 41,000.
Oricon’s figures for 9/28 to 10/4 indicate Bakemonogatari 1 beat all comers and sold 29,000 copies in BD and a further 15,000 in DVD for a total of 44,000.
By comparison, K-ON!’s then record breaking first volume total sales came to 41,000, and those of Macross Frontier to 39,000. Haruhi managed a paltry 29,000, although non-late night anime (invariably involving giant robots) have managed as much as 57,000 in the first week.
Shaft finally appears to have struck gold, and it seems possible its shameless tactics of broadcasting an unfinished anime may not backfire after all…

It doesn't qualify as a "sleeper" if everyone hails it as epic. However, I do agree that SHAFT did an awesome job with this (except that one episode during Nadeko snake where it looked like a literal slide show during most of the episode)
that is because they're planning on putting the whole scene in the DVD so people will buy it. And people probably will for the extra scene and junk. ( I'll buy them if i can find them so i'm not saying anything bad...)

As for the artwork, I see no grace in being inconsistent. So Shaft can't hire a team that can work together to make things blend in well. Laziness is not quality.
It's sort of sad too, had it been a series done for comedic or satirical purposes, I could have seen myself enjoying it. "Oh no, a crab stole my weight and I am upset."
It is not impossible for the artwork to be "what some would consider." good. The thing is, if it were consistent then it would have been good, but it wasn't, so overall the artwork was terrible, and I don't care how high quality your screen shots are, a bad art style is a bad art style.
Also I would like to note that even if there were comedic moments in the series, (bear in mind something like that is far from unheard of in these types of series.) that doesn't make it good. What I meant when I said comedic and satirical was a mockery of itself and the way stories like it are told.
Again you are clearly not watching the same anime. It is very self referential mentioning things like game-gal characters, tsundere archetypes, typical romantic responses.
And what is inconsistent or bad about the art style? Again, episode 1 and 2 on the Blu-ray had a lot of quality scenes and artwork.
If you don't enjoy the art style then it's your loss. It was clearly eye candy and I couldn't think of any series this fall that looked as sharp or different (shading, lightning, character designs).
The artwork is generally pretty nice. I don't know what you are talking about. There are probably thousand of screens from episode 1 and 2 of the blu-ray that will prove you wrong.

If we get down into the little details, naturally we're going to find differences between Bakemonogatari and every other anime (just as we would for any other anime), but Bakemonogatari follows very typical archetypes of the anime genre, particularly in its characters (which are the soul of the show). I'm sure you're smart enough and know enough about anime to figure out what they are.
Afterall, Hitagi is the typical tsundere that public wants to see.
