Tales of Graces Spectacular

tales-of-graces.jpg

The latest “mothership” Tales title is Tales of Graces for the Wii, due for release soon and by the looks of the trailers featured below one of the most impressive Tales games to date.

Few could help but notice the fairly impressive graphical quality appears on par with the other “nextgen” Tales mothership title, Tales of Vesperia.

This either suggests the Wii’s hardware has been skilfully employed, or perhaps that the less than spectacular graphics of Tales of Vesperia on the Xbox 360 beta and the even worse graphics of the “Perfect” PS3 version are evidence of Namco’s poor handling of these systems…

The game itself is said to be one of the longest Tales games yet (impressive considering length of such titles as Tales of the Abyss), but other than Tales of Hearts style seamless world navigation it appears the game follows the usual Tales formula.

Character design is handled by Mutsumi Inomata, whose shoujo-esque designs may be familiar from Tales of Destiny and Tales of Rebirth, amongst others. The game is voiced by the usual cast of top seiyuu.

Tales of Graces is due December 10th, perhaps an unfortunate choice of release date for RPG fans considering Final Fantasy XIII is due a week later.

No information on an international release is yet available, and nor is it clear whether the title will later find its way onto the PlayStation as with previous Nintendo to Sony Tales ports – there is certainly some suspicion that it will.

I wonder it this game will even use the wiimote as a motion sensor at all. Aside from that this game looks horrible. Tales graphics always use outdated graphics. 5 years ago this might have looked impressive.

You guys no nothing, Final fantasies these days have good graphics and shit story, Tales are a brilliant series, they don't need the graphics because their plots are top notch almost ALWAYS.

Anon is right though, storywise Tales games are only so-so. A lot of melodrama and big settings are not subsitute for a good story.
Tales is built on great (mostly melodramatic) moments and atmosphere, most certainly not the overall story. But then again, melodrama is often mistaken for story.

Having said that, I love the series. Vesperia was only so-so though, so I have no hopes whatsoever when Graces is concerned (who came up with that ridiculous name anyway).

That is like someone calling something a cliche when it is just a trope. Tales has good stories that have a meaningful purpose and characters which fulfill their purpose in the story. Just because something seems over the top, dramatic, or anything(especially when compared to real, normally mellow life) doesn't mean it is bad. The story has a purpose, you should judge how it achieves that purpose.

N.R. I'm really impressed by your way of thinking. Graphic come in third behind Gameplay and Storyline. Give me the game with the best graphic ever, but if the gameplay or the storyline suck, it's still a shitty game. If you play game for their graphic, you're missing a lot of fun and awesome games.

More, tales series always worked with graphic like that, this is their style. I like it, I don't want all game to have the same kind of graphic, gonna be a boring gaming world.

due to the impossibility of an update fix on the wii (if needed) they are actually testing this game before going gold; it sure impose a plus on the development cost, but they will be getting that money back and more from the guys who own both consoles.

Such is the problem with long running RPG games. The originality seems to plummet exponentionally as each new title comes out.

    Comment by Anonymous
    20:31 03/10/2009 # ! Neutral (0)

Almost every game revolving around Adventure/RPG goes like this:

    -Save the world
    -Beat evil empire
    -Protagonists/Antagonists had traumatic past
-Good Guys=Bad Guys while Bad Guys=Good Guys
-Somone always wants to get stronger for revenge or to protect
    -Somone is manipulated
    -Betrayals

Final Fantasy is the biggest one to achieve this. The only difference is the graphics over time, to much enjoyment to GrphX Whores.

Storywise, Final Fantasy Tactics blows any other RPG away. And I don't even like the series (meh'd at 7, hated 10, don't care much for 12 and only 9 I would like to play).

    -Save the world: nope
    -Beat evil empire: nope
    -Protagonists/Antagonists had traumatic past: nope
-Good Guys=Bad Guys while Bad Guys=Good Guys: not really, Delita is too complex to just call him a good bad guy or vice versa
-Somone always wants to get stronger for revenge or to protect: nope, not really
-Somone is manipulated: yes, somewhat, but I'ld be dissapointed if that didn't happen in a very political plot
-Betrayals: not so much, more a trust no-one feel.

And even the clichéd themes it handles so well, I love that game.

    1. There is actually nothing unusual about the main character at all.

    2. His master actually joins the party.

    3. I suppose people expect things to oxymoronically become more original as time goes by.

    1) Then how about screams like "Oh no, his body.... blablabla".

    2) He was "good", then the hero finds out he's bad. I dunno how it'll turn out, but judging by the trailer, he's just a copy of Vaan.

    3) Yeah, I do. I sure have lots of original ideas and stories for such games. There's a lot of talented ppl who are not in the game industry, they read books instead. And they write alot of fanfiction stories too. And alot of them would gladly work on a commercial title. Instead, the game companies hire story writers who doesnt know shit about good and intriguing story. The exceptions are rare.

    1. Because only clones and the Chosen Ones have the priviledge of having anything happen to their body. Normal people would not be affected at all by mysterious tendrils of magical light.

    2. He. Is. A part. Of the party members. Reading that tall declaration of "having lots of original ideas", I really wish you could at least comprehend the concept of having ideologies clash even amongst protagonists.

    3. I wish you luck.

There will always be people who THINK they can become good story writers, but more often than not they just write crappy fan-fiction.

Get off your ass and go pitch your story to publishers if you think you can do so well and still remain as original as you started out when writing story after story for over 30 years because it's your livelyhood at stake!

Not every writer of non-interactive fiction is a good GAME writer.

Games are not books. They work differently. And the writing must acknowledge that. A lot of the clichés you mention are a nod to the fact that, primarily, the game is interactive and has a certain game system that should be prevailent (in this case, going through dungeons and battling).

True, but if you flip your argument upside down, even games where the story IS supposed to be the main focus(visual novels come to mind) you still find age-old clichés and cookie cutter characters and plot devices.

    Comment by Anonymous
    21:26 04/10/2009 # ! Neutral (0)

In reality, coming up with this massively original plot never happens. If you consider more than games just about ever major plot idea has been tried. That's because when people think "original" they only think of the general scope of the plot. "protagonist is a villain but not really." every read paradise lost? What's original is the little details and how the execute the plot. A cliche has to be boring or poorly used. If it is good or atleast ok and is still interesting it is not a cliche, it's called a trope.

    Comment by Anonymous
    00:03 19/12/2009 # ! Neutral (0)

THERE ARE NO ORIGINAL IDEAS ANYMORE.

Unless someone adds another concept of life to "metaphor" into a game, then there will be no original stories. People fail to see how it's not just about the stories itself but the characters also relating the story. It's a mix of several other characters fan-fic writers never seem to understand.
