The 2008 market for character goods in Japan was estimated at $17.1 billion, and recently released statistics allow the top anime franchises to be ranked according to how much merchandise they sold, a very important metric as sales of anime goods can dwarf proceeds from anime sales.
The figures themselves, compiled by Amusement Journal, are based on extrapolations from a 1,000 participant consumer survey, rather than on actual sales (which would involve thousands of companies pooling data). 100 franchises of all kinds are ranked.
The percentages represent estimates of the scale of the franchise out of the entire market; the number in brackets is the ranking out of the overall top 100 franchises, most of which are not anime related.

In case you are wondering how, for example, Haruhi could end up beating One Piece despite One Piece being vastly more popular, the most probable explanation is simply that popularity (in terms of rating and readership) and the ability to sell merchandise based on a franchise are not always closely related.

It's true, the Gotta Catch 'em All motto has been dropped long ago. I should know since I'm a huge Pokémon fan. XD

they dropped the slogan because you cannot catch them all, every time you get close more come out. Those pokemon are just too fucking horny, they keep cross-breeding and making more new pokemon to catch
I remember reading some article that only a small portion of the currently possible Pokemons have been revealed based on the currently available elements.
And that's assuming they don't introduce new elements (seems this has already happened once).

With an entire Pokemon Center store dedicated to Pokemon merchandise, and existing in multiple locations throughout Japan, it's really not surprising at all that it comes out top.

And now you know why Nintendo maintains a focus on the child demographic. Never underestimate the power of children with parents with credit cards. Never forget that the merchandise targeted for this demographic always spills out into older audiences. And never trick yourself into believing that the inverse will hold equally as true.

Seeing how many shitty models Bandai fabricated based on Gundam one could trought it was a better bussines. I mean, GunPla is EXPENSIVE, while most of pokemon merchandise are cheap "happy meal" figurines.
Expensive means little kids don't get them generally. Which means there's more demographic towards the adult fanbase, which is much smaller...
