Sony’s new PSP Go, which eschews a UMD drive in favour of reliance on the PlayStation Network’s game download service, was supposed to allow current PSP game owners to download the games they already owned for free, but Sony has dumped the scheme in a move which many will suspect is in the hopes of prompting PSP owners to repurchase titles they already own.
A spokesman offered a terse and improbable denial of its previously announced intent to provide such a service:
“We were evaluating a UMD conversion program, but due to legal and technical reasons we will not be offering the program at this time.”
A “Rewards” scheme is being offered for a limited time in the UK, allowing UMD owners to download three of a mere 17 games, but Sony rules out a similar scheme for the US.
Sony insists it will be maintaining sales of the traditional UMD-tied PSP, but with the revenue potential of forcing users onto a purely digital and entirely Sony controlled marketplace in the form of PSN, it might be wondered how long it will take before “legal and technical reasons” force Sony to offer only the Go…

Oh sony, you.
Start your trolling. PSP Go is a NO - NO. (Oh, & this is NOT a console war).
Uh, I believe that Sony already started the trolling with this unpleasant change in hardware.
"It's a Sony."
"It's a $ony."
It's a Pony!
It's a Phony!
Its a iPhone!
"an"... is an Iphone
It's an Iphail
You all fail its, "It's a S*ny"
It's a Dick Slap
I'll buy their PS3 but will never buy PSPgo(to hell)...
I actually pre-ordered one!
...what? its a smaller...
^slap with leek
SONY AGAIN!
PSP Go! To hell!
it's called waiting for CFW. Then you probably would never have to buy a psp game, and since sony actually provides you with the iso, it would actually be easier to pirate!
It's a NO - GO
It's a piece of SHIT plain and simple.
This was to be expected. Giving everybody their old games for free would cause them to put all their games on the Go, and fill up their hard drives too quickly without develpers making a profit. Sony wants new sales for developers so they keep making good games.
However, the people with older PSPs can still play all their old games, and this isn't a problem for new customers. This isn't really a bad thing, just less convenience.
Did you really think Sony would hand you a second copy of a Developer's product for free?
If they gave you a way to transfer the game from the disk onto your old psp's memory card so you could transfer it to the psp go then they wouldn't be giving you a free game. It can be done with homebrew so they could put the feature in an update. The reason why they don't do this is because they are greedy and don't care about their customers.
PS. To get around the issues with potential piracy they could put in a requirement where you have to register your old psp with the psp go for the games to work.
yes you fucktard, i expect to get a copy of something i payed for
So, basically, instead of figuring out a system to give already-paid-for-games this to people who already own a PSP and want to buy a new one, Sony decides to troll their users and make them shell out.
Twice.
"And you expected more out of Sony?"
....no.
The new and improved psp No!!
It's technical, you wouldn't understand it. Now go rebuy games plz.
That's a creepy picture of Miku.
Agreed.
I think it's cute, but her boobs are a little to big..
I prefer big boob than a flat chest.
I'm otaku but not lolicon.
Creepy doesn't cut it. That is not Miku! Looks at the chest!
Been doing that the whole time...
What's wrong with you. I'd welcome a Sadako Miku.
I was considering buying one, But I think I've changed my mind . . .
I think a lot of people will do the same thing and the pspgo will fail for this reason. I guess sony just likes to screw themselves out of customers by hurting them.
Good now I wont feel bad when I "pirate" the games I already own when it becomes possible.
Well, you aren't really pirating the game if you already own it. It's more like borrowing a digital copy.
No, it's more like legitimately format shifting a product you already own, something that should be a right of every consumer.
Except, in a legal sense, there's no "legitimate" way to do that. Even copying a cd you bought onto a computer you own is technically copyright infringement.
not when the cd doesnt have an protection. (umd for example...)
Either way, it's not pirating, and that's all that matters.
Things are looking grim for the PSP Go, retailers seem hesistant to sell it and consumers seem hesitant to buy it.
And legal issues? Sony is having legal issues putting THEIR own product on THEIR own system?
The legal issues are likely with other developers, such as Square-Enix, that are not owned by Sony. If the most popular titles on the PSP would not be available for the transfer service, it might not be cost-effective to implement the system in the first place.
Just because they are played on a Sony machine doesn't mean Sony has the right to give away another entity's intellectual property.
In all likelihood, developers wouldn't refuse outright -- they would ask for some kind of pay to allow the service. Since Sony wanted to do the transfer service for free, it wouldn't make good business sense to pay developers' extra royalties.
Fuck! Sony you lost me now.
Just makes me glad that I waited to buy a PSP, if ever..
I found each revision of the PSP after the PSP-2001 models seem to follow Sony's tactics of removing features or adding somewhat weak features from what they remove.
Still have my epic PSP-1001 model.
Same for me. The original is still the best. It's been with me for 4 years and is still in perfect condition.
My original has gone through so much shit, and still works perfectly. No upgrade any time soon, especially after this.
I might upgrade if I can win a PSP Go in the imminent giveaways about to flood the internet.
I still have my original psp-1001. dropped it more than 4 times from 5 feet off the ground on hard, tile floor and it still looks and works like new. Not even chipped. No way I'm buying the GO.
Sony SUCKS FUCKING ASS WITH THIS PIECE OF SHIT.
i havent touched my PSP in 8 months and im not even missing it.. PSP is really getting boring lately, and these news dont make things any better..
Its dead, the whole concept is dead. Know why? Because they dont have pokemon.
