It's unfair to call Equality Now an American institution these days, as the majority of this is coming from their UK research office, which coordinates international efforts. It's somewhat ironic that eroge is in fact legal in the US so long as it doesn't represent obviously graphic depictions of underage sex, anyone actually alive, and remains properly labeled and kept out of the hands of minors, which would actually have been amusing had they just been leaping from the US. Unfortunately other countries are not as litigiously argumentative over every perceived right. ;p

I think the issue here is more that Japan didn't defend themselves, and thus appear an easy target. Equality Now cherishes results, especially wins, and if you show them your belly they will gut you open and suck down your intestines like spaghetti so they can wave your skin as a flag on their next campaign.
