Hastily concluded oppai manga To Love-Ru seems to have retained enough popularity to create some entertaining tracing controversy centred around an amusing attempt to cash in on the moe boom by selling moe seaweed using traced To Love-ru imagery…
The company in question was to begin sales of its moe-themed Hokkaido konbu (a type of kelp widely harvested and eaten in Japan). Moefication was to be accomplished by the addition of maids and schoolgirls to the packaging, and a star and gratuitous use of hiragana to the product name (青春☆こんぶ).
However, the makers were soon tipped off that the illustrations they were going to use appeared awfully similar to To Love-Ru published illustrations.
The illustrator, アセリオ / Aserio, was confronted, and denied the charges, providing a photo of his mother in the same pose as the characters and insisting this was the model he used.
The company decided not to believe him (fortunately, we do not see the photographs, but it is possible his mother did not look like the schoolgirls pictured).
After the plagiarism was exposed the company swiftly withdrew the product and got rid of the illustrator responsible; he is currently in hiding after deleting his Pixiv profile, doubtless fearing the wrath of 2ch, though he did update his now closed site with an apology mentioning 2ch as the ones responsible for hunting him down like a dog.
This appears a simple case of plagiarism, something which To Love-Ru is no stranger to, but as the recent furor over Urasora demonstrates, things are not always so cut and dried as with konbu…

Indeed, try using this excuse when you're a teacher who raped and indecently assaulted as many as 27 female students, that would be pretty awesome.

HOW THE HELL CAN THEY SPOT THIS? Do they have some sort of humansupercomputer on the disguise of 2ch?
Veda browses 2ch
nekkid innovator
2ch has juiz.
Yeah, seriously.
And why would you copy from the same source for all your images anyway?
He made no attempt to cover it up either. There's little to no change aside from clothing.
hence trancing/plagiarism.
2ch worked under FBI
Nah, they worked for illuminati
2chan IS illuminati.
*fixed*
I have the same question. Spotting this things actually seems impossible to me.
On the other hand if you see an anime over 100 times and read a manga 200 times maybe you will be able to actually see any similarity anywhere.
There is a high possibility that few of 2ch denizens are very skilled programmers. So, it's possible to write a program that would search all the pictures it finds on the net and finds a duplicates. You see what I did there?
No it is not possible for 1 or 2 programmers to write such a complex program.
Image analysis and matching is very complex, and needs very large sophisticated programs.
Please do not repeat this silly suggestion any more.
iqdb does pretty well, although a lot of it works with color matching between images
>There is a high possibility that few of 2ch denizens are very skilled programmers.
There is also a high probability that a lot of them are simply Anime otaku.
The entirety of 2ch is a brain in a jar, hooked up to a supercomputer.
A Buso Renkin reference, or a Gurren Lagann reference?
How bout THEY SAVED HITLER'S BRAIN!

Cool story bro.
That's possibly the MOEsome-est avatar you ever used, Obsidian...
I find it amusing that you take notice of who I am, or the changes that I do.
Heh.
Seems like i can draw a conclussion from these kind of articles;
Some artists in Pixiv trace other artworks..
Some "ARTISTS" in Deviantart steal other artworks..
I don't call those pussies artist, being afraid of not being able to draw something decent or good, resorting to tracing/stealing art/hoping to be praised. These are the people who don't put their heart into their drawings.
Oh wow, I trace manga all the time, as well as real photos, just to get the postures right.
'Course, like the artist mentioned, I make sure to change the face, hair, and clothes.
Dammit, what I'm doing is plagiarism then, and should I get popular, maybe I will incur the wrath of 2ch as well.
I'll be willing to dare them to identify the source of the drawings traced from real life photos though (i.e. the ones offered on free photo sites).
2ch wants YOU to draw original stuff, OR THEY WILL HUNT YOU DOWN LIKE A DOG.
Please tell me you're joking.
YOUR A JOKE!
...
MAKE ME LAUGH!
Yeah, what's wrong with tracing something to begin with? There's a finite number of postures anyway so it's bound to happen, that chars have the same pose as others. Maybe he should have left a leg or an arm away, making the char disabeld/moe.
I agree that there are infinite amounts of poses that have already been drawn, but no one draws the same exact line, that's where styles comes in to distinguish the way they draw. Tracing gives you confidence as an artist, but if your not willing to go through the frustration, concept, failure of drawing, then tracing will be your limit as an artist.
Exactly. If you have to trace to get a posture right, you simply can't draw. Anime characters are extremely easy to copy if you tinker a bit with a pencil, but understanding how warped human proportions can give birth to idealized characters is something else.
Nowadays it's not rare to see kids who can't even copy by freehand claim to be artists thanks to tracing software...luckily this doesn't stop their art from being mediocre, regardless of how good they can color/edit the base lineart.
Knowing to draw the human body in any position from any perspective takes skill, and gives you almost limitless options with your art. Unless you're going to be a shoujo artist, only knowing how to trace is going to severely limit your art, especially when you're confronted with a position/perspective you can't find a reference of.
Make your own 3D renders. That's why I do. A "virtual" model!
And because it's your own, no one else will ever know ... plus, if you're like me and have been drawing for 10 years, you know exactly where and what to clean up. It's amazing.
I start with a "thumbnail" sketch, then a rough, I pop open Cinema4D and basic humanoid, move it around, hit render and use that to help with errors.
Tracing and photo-referencing are two different things.
Tracing for practice and tracing for works for class, products, projects especially those that will earn you money are also two different things.
Plagiarism occurs when you misappropriate someone's authored work as your own. Merely tracing a picture doesn't make it plagiarism. Attributing yourself as the original artist of your trace is plagiarism.
These particular comparisons are way too weak to fire the guy over. Then again Japan is probably overflowing with artists that they can play along with these witch hunts.
