Chinese visitors to a notorious village street in Hubei province were recently met with a shocking scene.
With no municipal waste disposal service whatsoever, and no initiative on the part of residents, the garbage is simply dumped on the side of the street, abutting a river (itself already polluted).
However, dense clouds of flies soon form, so someone sets fire to the refuse to drive them off.
This causes the rubbish to burn slowly for days, spreading a disgusting miasma of smoke from burning filth and plastic throughout the area, which happens to be used by children on their way to school and students on their way to university.
After the rubbish is burnt off, fresh rubbish is dumped on top and the cycle repeats.
This “waste management” approach has apparently been used for many years, with no end in sight.

Indeed. It's because of capitalism that these problems exist in the first place. In a purely socialist society, which is possible only in theory, this type of shit wouldn't happen. Believe it or not, the current Chinese government does fight political and corporate corruption through strict regulations and monitoring policies, but the sheer number of people in the country makes it highly difficult. If you swap the government for a more western-style democracy, issues like these would get worse before they improve.
Even more idiotic are people talking about people "killing the government". And then what? Who's going to run things? What do you think would happen to the global economy? Rising up in anarchy has seldom led to positive improvements historically, and I don't see how it will work in a country like China. Of course, it's a better idea than the usual discriminatory remarks about "kill all Chinese" and "drop a nuke on China" comments here.
And let's be honest, people take these isolated tidbits of news about China to represent the country and its people as a whole. Anyway, this is an awful situation. I feel bad for them. What makes me especially nervous is that some of the material you might find in the waste piles is not exactly the safest thing to be setting ablaze (like certain plastics, styrofoam, and such..) To have people be walking by that sort of thing every day...ahh.. Worrisome.
In the province of Yunnan (where i come from) is a similar problem like this. The garbage arent recycled but only ditched on a hill far away from the City, which slides into the nearby, already very polluted sea.
10 Years before Beijing gave the local government nearly 1.2 billion Yuan for the modernisation of the garbage system by ordering them to buy 100 modern, german build garbage-trucks.
But the shit is, that, even with the trucks, the recycling factories didnt match the german trucks which renders the whole project useless.
Also, out of 100, only 30 trucks where bought and sitting somewhere rusting away, while the rest of the money was spend for parties and send to oversea accounts by the corrupt local functionals.
After some time the central government found out about this crime and persecuted these people, but some got awy and pledged for political asylum in the west, which was successful, becaue they where INDEED persecuted by dem evul commie government (and propably celebrated as anti-communist heroes by their western hosts).
But those who were caught, got their deserved 7.62x39mm high-speed lead treatment directly in the back of their head.
Now, with a more competent and less corrupted governour in charge, things are slowly sorting themselves out. Of course the pollution wont reduce untill 2018, but at least we're optimistic...

Despite objections, the province pictured is a representation of a very small city in China. No, it's clearly not a tiny rural farming village but when you consider the sheer size of other cities in China it's not hard to realise that euro-centric definitions of 'small' do not apply in China.
Furthermore, this is no reason to attack the Chinese populous, nor express an un-empathic dissent towards the Chinese government on behalf of the Chinese people. The last decades have seen an amazing progression towards legitimate liberty in China, Private ownership is now permitted and - although conditional - the Chinese people all maintain basic human rights. Due to the amount of people in China it is hard to incite political action amongst the uneducated classes [the majority] in China, instead, it is the duty of the 'enlightened' or 'intellectual' Chinese to become advocates for the rural and less educated people. This works reasonably well and exemplifies altruistic values that one would never see in Western societies rooted in judeao-christian foundations.
With no aid from the totalitarian singular political party, it's a shame that things like these trash pileups occur, but it is by no means an excuse to attack the Chinese people, especially given that most people here are sitting in on real furniture in front of pricey computers, living in countries that try to tell other countries like China and India they're not allowed to have adequate power sources because the rich white world is scared of carbon dioxide.

Yep... Capable of anything, hence the above report. Of course, there are people out there like me who pretty much have no interest in China, but I still acknowledge the fact that China has quite a number of accomplishments.
But why is it that you pick any guy off the street and he can't give a recount of the wonders of China? Well, for one, China is a bloody selfish country. By keeping lots of things like technology to themselves, it's only natural that the west would reign over China.
The west shows off (sometimes too much, but hey...) and China keeps everything secret. Obviously the world would recognise the west to be the creator of the many "anything" you claim that China is capable of, since they heard/saw the west did it first.
