Man Sues “Homophobic” Bible for $70,000,000


A homosexual is demanding $70,000,000 in damages from Bible publishers for printing a book which dares to condemn homosexuality as a sin.

The man, unsurprisingly an American, claims two Bible publishers “manipulated” their translations from an ambiguous condemnation of “abusers of themselves with mankind” to an explicit condemnation of “homosexuals.”

The King James Version of the bible, to many English-speaking Christians “The Bible,” exerted considerable influence over the English language as a literary masterpiece. However, its admonitions are frequently ambiguous, and its translation politically motivated or disputed.

For example, the King James Version renders a condemnation of sexual deviancy in 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 obliquely as:

Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind… shall inherit the kingdom of God.

Modern editions tend to favour much less ambiguous wording of the same passage:

New International Version:

Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders…

New American Standard Bible:

Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals….

New King James Version:

Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites…

English Standard Version:

Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality…

The man claims that the publishers of such Bibles caused him “demoralization, chaos and bewilderment,” by deliberately publishing “homophobic” versions of the Bible, entitling him to huge damages.

One publisher has denounced his claims as “ridiculous,” pointing out that they neither translated nor own the rights to the version they publish.

Most major religious texts take a dim view of homosexuality, so it seems he may have a very long string of lawsuits ahead of him.

    Another case of the truth being too hard to swallow for some.Do what you want here on Earth but in the end we'll all have to answer for our actions, more importantly it's more important how we treat one another.Personal habits and/or foibles we're personally responsible for and can't blame them on anyone or anyTHING else, including the Bible.The Bible has been published in literally hundreds of different versions and translations over 2k+ years and, never has it been reported to mentally cause harm to anyone but the socially immoral and then only because it warns them about what they'll face in the end if they live their earthly lives immorally(which we all have done from time to time)and aren't remoreseful for doing so(the worst being harm to one another and being offeseful towards God).If you don't believe, then you don't have anything to worry you???

    Why are gays so butthurt when the world is FULL of fornicators? I hate it when "christians" commit fornication and then condemn fags. If you believe in Jesus judge yourself accordingly, not others. If you don't believe him quit pretending like you are a christian.

    most of these translations come from the EU and are over 70 years old. Under EU law you can renew a copyright ONCE after 35 years for another 35 years then it becomes public property as these works are.

    Also this is America is could literally go out in the streets right now and say GEORGE BUSH DID SEPTEMBER 11th! and it's perfectly legal.

    p.s. don't read the Bible and personally interpret what you have read as being personally offensive.As mentioned by others above, it cannot be translated personaly word for word, as the original wording has been lost for some time and has been reworded(sometimes
    to better reflect the ideals of those doing the "translating").The overall ideas and lessons are still pretty clear and really aren't offensive to anyone or any group other that blatant moral sinners who have no remorse for what they do and the way they lead their lives.As long as we do our best to treat everyone as we ourselves would like to be treated, and treat God with respect and reverence(to those of us who are believers.To those who aren't, it isn't up to me to tell you how to live or what to believe or no, that's a purely personal matter).

    Actually you can't publish your own version of the bible without getting huge problems and being censored, since all books have to be checked to get agreement to get published. Freedom of speech doesn't exist in ammerica, people just think that it exists but it doesn't.

    The publisher you apply to, as an independent business, may reject your Bible, but you, on your own, can write whatever you want to, call it The Bible, and print it at home.

    The only legal problems you might have is if your Bible encourages immediate criminal activity, or if you start selling it without being licensed as a business or applying for tax exempt status.

    Except that the lawsuit is not "undoubtly" american and actually has a fair point.

    Bible scholars have mentioned for decades that this passage has nothing to do with the original bible passage, which does not mention homosexuals even in passing.

    The bible is far less problematic than one thinks - it's mostly radical american christian fanatics that try to change the bible so it supports their homophobia, and it doesn't surprise me that uneducated americans, like many commentors here, think this is true. The only mention in the original text about homosexuality mentions it in Leviticus, where it is an abomination equal to wearing clothing made of multiple fabrics(polyester, for example), eating shellfish, and looking at naked women (OHWAIT). Oh, and the Jesus guy? He pretty much said the leviticus rules don't count anymore.

    Too bad, eh?

    What the hell is wrong with these people? If homosexual people want to achieve equality in the society (at least Western civilization), they should seek ways to legitimize homosexual marriage. That's the best thing they can do to erase all the negative aspects about their orientation, not messing around with some religions!

    Legitimization does not concern anything about any religious beliefs. So, for those homosexual equality civil activists, stop suing and prosecuting religions as well as wasting time like this!

    As I said a few posts above I have nothing against homosexuals and would also as you say encourage their marriage, civil or religious.

    However the moment they are forcing a religious group that believes in heterosexual marriage to bend their views for their sake they are treading ground to liberal fascism.

    There are plenty of religions and even rebel churches within religions that disapprove of such that offer marriage services.

    I don't see why anyone would want to force these people, and the Bible to wipe out the offending statements.

    The direct equivalent to Sankaku Complex would be to force people to stop playing murder, rape and other crime simulators because whomever is victimized on screen has something against it.

    That is not to say that there is anything wrong with what the Bible says about homosexuals. It is a matter of belief whether one believes in surprise sex, hell for the adulterers, passionate violence and forcible appropriation.

    I think a lot of you are mis-interperating the legal standing behind the suit. As a publisher, to alter the the translation of the bible, just as it would be illegal to alter the wording of the constitution is not their legal right. If given a disclaimer stating that their translation, was an adaptation of the intent of the original author rather than a direct quote is subject to lible as is anything else. A publisher does not have the right to alter text to suit their own needs, neither for good or bad reasons. Simply the responsibility of the publisher is to write the text as direct translation, neither approving, nor condmening homosexuality as it not not explicitly condemmed in the original text. It is equally as offensive as if they had stated that Jesus had not literally returned from the dead, but it was instead a metephor.
