When confronted about its mockery of the remaining Haruhi fanbase with the four disc Endless Eight DVD release, even Kadokawa itself can only say “it would be nice if they sell.”

Their animation department responds to enquiries thus:

“Even in the company hardly anyone knows why it took eight repeated episodes spread across 4 DVDs with two episodes each in order to unravel the mystery thoroughly. We are aware of the fan reaction, but…”

When asked directly about whether they think these tactics will result in sales at the level of the first season, even Kadokawa is less than enthusiastic:

“Well… All that can be said is that it would be nice if they sell, wouldn’t it?”

What a fucking fail. What the hell was going through the minds of the people are Kyo-Ani when this was approved.

I didn't find Endless Eight that bad or annoying, but from a business perspective it was a horrible mistake.

Same for me. I myself would be fine with like a box set of the Endless Eight episodes, but making me buy them almost all separately is too much. Glad that when/if it gets licensed here, it will be a box set or 2 part set like most anime now.

They really should have just done what someone on Nico did- combine all 8 episodes of Endless Eight and have 8 splitscreen playing simutanously on screen or spread them over two episodes with 4 splitscreen...

They needed to release Episodes 1,2, and 8 on one DVD. That's all anyone should ever have to watch.

I think the point was they know no one is going to buy it, not that they're incredulous as to how many people are going to waste money on it.

And that's actually the point, IF THEY ALREADY KNEW that it's not gonna sell, the question would be now is - Why did they still bothered to go through w/ it ?! Isn't fucking amazing how KyoAni is totally failing right now. Hahaha!

Personally, I think the anime industry needs a major downsizing - a culling or purge, if you will. With a more selective, discerning audience and budget/sponsorship levels that are more of an ultimatum for you to "not fuck up" and produce some quality instead of delving into the latest moe blob trend, Kadokawa wouldn't be able to pull off shit like this.

The DVDs will probably sell. Anime fanatics are godless, philistine spendthrifts who are also obsessive/compulsive completists, and our numbers are legion.

    09:33 09/09/2009 # ! Neutral (0)

Actually, that would make things go even more towards trends. Trend-exploiting equals sales a lot more often than not doing it does. Trends are trends for a reason. You might ask for people to be more "discerning" but at the core of things the lowest common denominator likes things that are very base. Same reason that everything else that goes towards the interests of the common folk works better and sells better than that aimed toward a boutique crowd.

I don't know. They churn out anime these days like Nintendo shovelware. I'm really talking about just annihilating half of every animation studio which in may effect a change in an audience's tastes. We've seen instances where changing what is provided to a group can affect its preferences (see westernization and the history of television broadcasting). You know, supply-side theory. It may not work well in economics, but it has its applications.

    Comment by Anonymous
    13:33 09/09/2009 # ! Neutral (0)

but what the above anon is referring to is that doesn't get rid of "delving into the latest moe blob trend".
in the sense of tastes may change, but replace "moe blob" with any other subject and the trend behavior will still exist.
and the problem with your idea is culling the herd usually results in the opposite. It doesn't spur range and innovation, instead it tends to spur digging of heels and product focus on what is commercially viable. thus further, even more focused, delving into the latest [insert] trend

Hardly. A larger pool means that competitors will focus on the latest trends in a sort of moe race to gain more profits than the next guy. An environment without too much promise for wealth, but respected as a form of expression may get better quality. Let's say anime was viewed with as much mysticism and respect as oil painting. You won't get nearly as many anime out as we have now, but I'm pretty sure you'd get better percentage of thoughtfully crafted shows. Animators are making slave wages right now, so it won't be any big deal for them if they want to continue in the business. The fat cats in places like Kadokawa are what's stifling creativity in the industry. Get the cutthroat moneymaking potential out of the market and you may see more Shinkai Makotos in a small-scale environment than a few Sunrises.

We're both discussing in theories, so we can't be certain which is better. But the scenario you're describing is the one going on right now, with K-On! making record sales and TV anime riding the censorship line. The term "tsundere" didn't exist when the industry was smaller. Twintails weren't a staple that plagued half of every female character. Vanguard Princess would not have existed just ten years ago. I firmly believe in a golden age of anime, and it happened prior to this millennium.

Experimentation in the anime medium is good, but experiments will not always be successful, especially if they're ridiculously stupid.

Let Endless Eight be the flag that warns the industry never to do this again, since apparently common sense is less common than I would like to have believed.
