Hachune Miku, the chibi version of virtual idol Hatsune Miku, will be launched high into the heavens in a rocket this month.

The rocket, along with the Miku figurine, is taking part in the eXtreme Performance Rocket Ships (XPRS) contest, held by NASA in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada from September 18th to the 21st.

The project is being handled by Social Media Satellite Development Project (SOMESAT, formerly HAXA), the members all having met on NicoNico Douga, itself famous for popularising Hatsune Miku.

Somesat’s eventual aim is to launch Hachune Miku into space, though this launch will see them aim for a lesser altitude of some 2km.

The figure will showcase some technological advancement, which includes an electronic mechanism that is used to “wave” its signature “negi”.

In support of this, manga and anime legend Matsumoto Leiji has posted his own video of support for the project:

He is also creating a short Galaxy Express 999 animation featuring Japan’s space center, set to be shown on September 9th.
