You can know what's happening when you're 4. Being 4 doesn't mean you're not consenting (though clearly it's not legal, law labels minors as not given capacity). However, not resisting is not consent, because sometimes we do not resist out of fear.

i disagree with the not knowing thing. Past the age of three, she would prolly on an instictive level know what was going on. Remmember what had happened however? less likely

...by that point it is no longer really the act itself that causes the trauma (if there even is any) but the fact that you make the point to tell them and essentially say "dear, you are a ruined person" when issue could be avoided. The past need not hinder what the future has in store.
