You know, the ironic thing is that Rei was actually originally intended to be as disturbing as possible in an "uncanny valley" sense, and Hideaki Anno was actually extremely annoyed that the fandom reaction was more along the lines of "ZOMGF TEH REI!!!!11!1" On reflection, if that's what he was aiming for he shouldn't have made her so fucking hot.

No, I understand that they are all fetished in some way- But Mari is 'After the Fact'. If they expanded Togi of Hugo or an established side character into a bigger role I wouldn't complain. But Mari is 100% from scratch and she's not even MOE or in the vain as Asuka Rei- she's just Eye Candy.
While I'm more of a Asuka man and don't understand the Rei obsession - I recognize her an Icon and an Anime staple. The Rei-Asuka-Shinji Triangle doesn't work with Mari creating sexual tension.
If they made her a spaz or in maybe yuri for Asuka or perhaps a french exchange pilot who was like a tech pilot- I'd be more into her - she steals too much screen time and her character seems pointless- Rei & Asuka are all tension and counter-point needed for Shinji.
