Most characters seem to be mules that stand around the multiple auction houses in the game. You can only sell 8 items per character at any given time, so you need multiple characters to be able to make gil.

LOL. The Fallen god and the capturing god keima. Who was able to capture 10,005 women with his superb skills and is able to finish 3 visual novels in a day and is able to play for seven days w/o pauses, the one able to score 100 in his English test. he's such a great god.
OMG.. I see no one here is a MMORPG player.. What this "MMORPG refugee" is doing is called Multi-Boxing. He buys lets say 8 accounts of a MMORPG (FFXI, WoW, etc) and runs them simultaneously, and uses only 1 or 2 keyboards to run them all by using macro assigns to specific keyboard keys to perform specific actions (ex: heal party member, cast spell, attack, etc). This way this "MMORPG refugee" is able to party by himself with his own group without having to worry about looking for party members. Some players just have lots of money and don't know where to spend it, others just do this to level faster and in the end.. sell the high level characters, although I doubt this is the case, FFXI is just too hard to level to lose the time to sell characters.

Firstly, parties contain 6 people, so maybe you'd want one as a PL. 8 is too many. And if you have an account to PL with, what's the point of leveling up 6 more?
Secondly, why choose to play a game that forces you to group with others if you don't like doing that? If you're going to pay over $100 a month in subscriptions you may as well just buy a fully leveled character.
Thirdly, it's not hard to level in FFXI at all. I know people who were working and getting their masters and still have multiple 75 jobs in that game, relic weapon etc.
Yeah, FFXI is great and all if you're into non-stop grinding.
