PS3 Slim Sells Out

Sony’s last hope for revitalising its flagging videogame business this generation is apparently a huge success, with a host of Japanese retailers selling out of the PS3 Slim completely before the general release has even begun…
A quick tour of big name Japanese game and electronics retailers reveals inventory has all but dried up; confirmed as being completely sold out are Amazon, Yamada Denki, Sofmap, ubook, eDeji and Rakuten, with Bic, Yodobashi, Geo and Joshin having sold out of the Gundam bundle but not (yet?) the bare console.
Of course, no one would put it past Sony to deliberately restrict supply to stores in order to create “sold out!” headlines and create an air of rarity and desirability, as some might suspect Nintendo of doing with its hugely successful Wii when that was first released…

i will get a new ps3 when my one breaks down but i brought a ps2 to play ps2 games so need for me to get the newest ps3. i will when both broken down though

REGARDING BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY
They won't reintroduce it, ever. They will continue to sell the PS2 until it isn't needed to subsidize the losses the fat PS3 generated, then they will recode their best games in HD with trophy support -- they are already starting to do that with the God of War 1 & 2 Collection and time its release with GoW III. Perhaps ICO / SoTC to follow suit with Last Guardian.
Why should they offer BC if they cannot get money for it? It will only keep the used game sales market alive and they don't want that, they want to sell "new" games to people, and what better way to do that then by offering remakes!

Yeah but still if you want a blu-ray player the best choice is a PS3. It will cost less and you can also browse the internet or play a game. Basically is cheaper than a normal player and does more things. I don't see how that isn't a good investment.
Of course the PS3 Slim will sell out ;)
And the upcoming FFXIII bundle (there's gonna to be one, trust me) will be the bomb, i expect at least 100k PS3 Slim sold in that week of FFXIII's release :P

I wonder why almost nobody else had realised one of the BIGGEST selling factors of the PS3 in general?
It's obviously not just because of the games, but also because of its blu-ray capability!
Compared to other blu ray players on the market, the PS3 is the best investment in a Blu Ray player since it was basically the CHEAPEST blu ray player around; other standalone players sell for much higher and do nothing else. The PS3 can play blu ray movies AND play HD games. Now the PS3 slim is MUCH CHEAPER than the fat, AND can start playing PS2 games. It's a definite win there.
Xbox owners should consider investing in the PS3 because of its blu ray capabilities and ability to play exclusive PS3 games and PS2 games.
I can see a trend that Xbox fanboys demonise the PS3 just because they can't own it, and by doing so they are justifying their own mistakes and doubts in purchasing the Xbox instead of the PS3. HDDVD is already out of the picture, so why bother to flock to a system that supports an outdated format? The Xbox can now only play DVD9 games, and no HDDVD as promised. Unless it switches to Blu Ray, the Xbox will not last that long. It's only lasting long in ASIA because DVD9s can be pirated while Blu Ray can't.
Sells out in Japan, well that's one thing.
Let's wait and see how it will sell in the rest of the world. Japan's market is only one part of the worldwide market.
I'd like to put this into perspective: Japan has an installed base of 3.33 million units, the smallest one worldwide, and this is the same for every other system out there, even portable ones.
Any system that "sells out" in Japan (even moreso when its population is, for some unfathomable reason, battling its competition themselves, perhaps out of national pride or some other xenophobic crap) doesn't mean anything at all; the one market that "makes or breaks" systems is the American one. In fact, if it wasn't for both the Japanese generalized aversion for the 360 and Europe's overall preference for the PS3, the latter would be already dead by now.

Really? America sells more consoles? I seriously highly doubt that... China sells more... LOL, and if the USA is your basis for a console to sell out a success then you are as biased as fansboys go...you have to look at the bigger picture... there are larger markets other than North America... ASIA is by far a very large market for consoles wether you believe it or not.. China alone is selling consoles fast... the asian market is actually a big market for all console makers... The reason why xbox numbers look so high and mighty is because people who have their 360s break tend to buy another one while waiting for the warrantied unit to return.. personally I know a few friends who have 2-3 xbox 360 units at home, so they can swap the broken ones and still get to play.. that my friend is a pathetic excuse for sales figures..and IMHO I find those who actually do this quite pathetic...it's like being fooled by a company to buy extra for something that does not even deserve to be bought... talk about QC passed stickers on your 360s BAH!

Look, kid. Every single system in the history of videogames that ever managed to win a particular generation's console wars absolutely had to win over at the American market. Ever wondered how the Mega Drive/ Genesis, even though it bombed spectacularly in the Japanese market, managed to beat the NES and the SNES during 1992, eh?! The American market moves about double the amount of consoles and three times the amount of games that the Japanese one does, do you understand?
See, the Chinese aren't even a democracy, less than half of its tremendous population can afford a games console, you following this OBVIOUS FACT? That AMERICANS HAVE A VASTLY WIDER INSTALL BASE OF GAME CONSUMERS, NO MATTER HOW MUCH WONDERFUL OR USELESS CRAP THE JAPANESE ONE GETS, EH??

u might be right with your history and figures thus far, but before the 80s, China didn't even open up yet. And obviously not until the 90s would it be more susceptible to entertaining products, i.e Consoles. And do take a good look at China's population distribution, much of it now is flowing into the coast like Shanghai where the purchase ability is increasing. And just to remind you that Asia includes not only China and japan, there's Korea, Philipines, Thailand, Indonesia and India, just for the couple of one's with higher population.and besides, if Sony gets Europe as well, which has a higher standard of living, in a way, Sony does earn a bit more in the console war. NO DOUBT that M$ is ripping all of us off with LOL-dows and other related products.
and one more thing, China being democracy or not has nth to do with their purchase power on consoles, not games. Since ps3 is is a cheap blu-ray reader as well, u'll be expecting chinese pps to buy that over any other blu-ray player. That's a x2 win. Then again, the reason to buy it is not for gaming but for the blu-ray + reading all other pirated movies.

Another bit of info you may probably ignore; the Japanese gaming market is quite unique when compared to its neighbours in that PC gaming is rather weak. There has been an increasing tendency/ move to console gaming in the west for quite some time now, and Japan has known almost nothing but consoles throughout all their gaming history starting with the Famicom and having but scarce exceptions here and there (namely H-games for MSX, PC-FX and IBM PC). But China, South Korea and the other countries are almost entirely PC centric, there's still very little room for a console gaming market there.
So, quite frankly, I don't see how they're gonna save the PS3. Sony even promised it'd "last 10 years", and I can almost smell a PS4 announcement for holiday 2010, in the same vein of Windows 7 replacing Vista even though they're almost the bloody goddamn same thing (hey, now I see the connection! :D ).

It can. I have a 20gb unit 1st generation ps3 and I swapped the drive with a 320gb HDD and works perfectly fine.. I am planning to swap to a 500gb one

I was wondering why PS3's sold even less thatn the PS2 in Japan over the last couple of weeks, but obviously people chose to wait for the Slim.
