Nekopuchi is an artist of tremendous skill, but he grapples with a debilitating case of Makoto-mania which prevents him drawing any but Idolmaster’s charmingly boyish Makoto Kikuchi, though this has at least led to him becoming the undisputed master of Makoto illustration.
He confesses that before he even realises what he is doing he finds himself drawing Makoto; otherwise he is the usual cipher, just identifying himself as working in a creative field.
Judging by the improvement in his art over the six years or so of art he has published, and over his three years of life as a “Makoto-sukii,” we might surmise he is a talented illustrator in the visual content industry.
The 29th was Makoto’s birthday, prompting the illustration above. He writes about his life as a Makoto-maniac:

Recently I had a chance to reflect on just how much I love her. I love drawing her, and that’s fine because I love her, but I get the feeling this is starting to look really bad… But if I can just keep on drawing her I’ll be fine.
It’ll be nice if I’m still drawing her on her next birthday…

Can't really blame the guy. If his obsession gives him happiness, then more power to him. I wonder how people like this artist will take it when AI reaches a point where characters like Makoto will exist as intelligent avatars you can interact with, likely in virtual android social-circles over the internet.
Would he be disappointed? If he loves the ideal of her he has formed in his art and mind, he could hate seeing her as an independently functioning life form.
Or he could embrace this. This could stem from a desire to perceive the world through the comfort of beautified abstractions rather than our present imperfect reality. It depends on his particular brand of insanity (mind you, we're all insane, so I'm not insulting him).
Perhaps his current obsession is actually the best of all worlds for him. It's possible that those who fall this deeply in love with imaginary characters require interaction-free relationships to be happy... It could be a fear of rejection, fear of age/ugliness/death, or a strong desire to live in a comfortable, personally controlled reality ruled entirely by the person's expectations and desires.

So the question is: Is drawing her and pretending to love her really the limit of his concept of romance? Would being able to interact with her (confronting his social anxiety, their disagreements and character flaws) be the key to defeating the self-doubt he expressed in his comments, or an unwelcome change to rattle his stability and happiness?
...Is this a question everyone who prefers 2D will have to confront eventually?

Well said, LSD. I would point out, however, that while 2-D lovers may well be falling for idealized abstractions... so are people who fall in love with other people. Nobody starts off seeing another person warts-and-all; we start from the abstractions we form from basic observation, and then fill it in as new information arrives. The divorce rate is so damn high because people get married before they know about each other's irritating little habits and snafus, and then time and truth break down the idealized versions of their spouses in their heads.
So, really, whether or not your concept of romance extends far enough is a question for *everyone*.
