Kyoto Animation seems to have been busily photographing various picturesque locations for inclusion in its dying Haruhi franchise; with its usual terrifying attention to detail 2ch dispatched a scout party to compare the scenes appearing in the anime with their real world counterparts:
Should any of these locations be subjected to a sudden increase in dubious behaviour by desperate otaku, the cause will be plain.
KyoAni are of course no stranger to this technique…

Like I said earlier, Haruhi is set in a real place, so it makes sense to use that real place as reference material. KyoAni don't make a secret of this. And you can clearly see from the differing perspective and proportions between the images that they didn't just trace a photograph in Photoshop.
What's different about this compared to, say, featuring the Shibuya crossing in virtually everything set in Tokyo?
Most anime I've seen have the same kind of backgrounds; no variety to speak of. It's like if they just recycle them rather than draw them in a different style like in western animation.

I love how some images are closely done, yet some are entirely redesigned or made prettier.
~ despite controversy surrounding (any) animé...
I still find it ~ "pleasantly surprising" ~ on the amount of detail that is always added to an - "episode location" - which mirrors its actual place/counterpart/and or section.
I like the way its accurately portrayed (albeit) with some minor changes - yet - is still recognisable.
Impressive!
~ and this - "attention to detail" - is also represented by the 2D vs 3D comparisons of Kannagi, K-On!, and Clannad - just to name a few....

I think American animators should implement it within any US based carto-- ~ Oh never mind...

I should really get around to watching haruhi sometime.
It's better to get into it now than any other time. I watched it long after it came out and liked it, but because I saw it after the initial craze died down, I wasn't brainwashed into thinking it was amazing. Also, that means I wasn't dragged through all the season 2 marketing ploys for three years.
What Giascle said. I didn't get into it until about April of this year and I loved it. Had I explored it when it was extremely popular I would have either been sick of hearing about it or disliked it as over-hyped. I missed out on the majority of the three years of Kadokawa's cockteasing the fans, which if I'd gotten to the series while it was super popular would have made me say 'fuck it' and moved on.
Though, perhaps with Endless Eight being the result, I would have been better off...

It's not like they have been the only series to have done that. Many of Onegai Teacher's exterior shots where done that way several years ago & there were others before that . . .
Artefact DID link to other examples of the 'phenomenon' if you will. It's not rare to see, but it's always nice to look at the attention to detail.
But yeah, people are obsessed with Haruhi, so it lends to location hunting easier.
