Microsoft has taken care to assure everyone that its slashing of the Xbox 360 Elite’s price by $100 has nothing whatsoever to do with Sony’s imminent release of the PS3 Slim.
Microsoft’s Aaron Greenberg, boss of product management for the Xbox 360 and Xbox Live, told a journalist:
“Typically these types of price changes are targeted to drive sales for the holiday season. However it is difficult for our retail partners to make these types of changes in November or December so we try to work with them to make these types of adjustments before things get too hectic at retail.”
Nothing at all to do with Sony.
Being a hopeless PR flack, he also leaps on the chance to rubbish the PS3 when asked what he thinks about it:
“I guess as a gamer, I am glad I got an earlier PS3 console before they pulled a lot of the functionality like backwards compatibility out.”
Curiously, Microsoft dropped support for “Xbox Originals” earlier in the year, and by now many early adopters of the Xbox 360 are rather familiar with the company’s very reasonable warranty offering…

If we were to accept your "facts":
1) Difference between 360 and ps3 sales in US: 6 million
2) Difference between 350 and ps3 sales worldwide: 6 million
3) This implies that outside the US, 360 and ps3 are in a dead heat
4) At least some of those sales units are RROD replacements.
NO, You are wrong, 360 is outselling PS3 everywhere except Japan. In fact Japan is outselling 360 by about 2-3 million.
ANOTHER FACT: Japanese are VERY xenophobic they don't like to buy products from a foreign market, they would keep buying the PS3 no matter what, thats just the way they are.
U.S buyers however are not xenophobic with products, they can care less which nation the company is from or if the product itself is foreign, PS2 outsold the original Xbox by a landslide.
BTW, when you said that some of the sale units were replacements, THEY WERE NOT. Thats not the way console sales are calculated.
I'm not a PS hatter, In fact I still believe PS2 is the best console I've ever bought. I'm just frustrated that people keep saying false things to try to hype up the PS3, the PS3 has been an epic FAIL from Sony from the beginning, maybe when they make "PS4" or whatever I'll come around.

A good 360 is a "modified" 360. At least if you buy pirated 360 games it won't be much of a blow (in finances) if ever you get an RROD. The reason they probably dropped Xbox Originals is because there probably isn't as much demand for them any more anyway.
Sure, people would still wanna play Halo 1 and Halo 2 right after the 360 came out, but when Halo 3 was out, and roughly every single game on the Originals list was outclassed or sequeled by something, there isn't much of a point...
Now, no one can know for sure, but I'd say that what he (Aaron) was saying was probably true, but the PS3 Slim might have been another incentive. *shrug*

I'm fairly happy with my new PS/3. ($300.00 for the 80GB 'fat' model), because it was easy to put Linux on it.

I wouldn't get a PS3 just so i can use linux on it, that beats the purpose of a gaming console, If you want a gaming console just so you can install Linux on it, you're better off just building a low-end computer with those $300.
This all comes down to which games you wanna play, and get the console that has those games, functions other than gaming functions are simple extras that you can do without.

I was going to get an Arcade just to play some JRPGs but then a couple of things happened:
- I tried the demo of Last Remnant on PC and turned out it sucked
- I discovered the difference between western and JP versions of Star Ocean 4: they took out the anime drawings for the US version so that sucks
- I read reviews that Enchanted Arms and Infinite Undiscovery sucks
- I was hyped by Lost Odyssey but then watched some gameplay trailers and its too photorealistic for my taste so that sucks
- It seems the Bandai Namco JRPGs eventually get ported to PS3 with more content, so that sucks for Xbox 360 owners
- PS3 price finally one where I took the bait, so it sucks to be Microsoft
