Clearly, Miyazaki’s latest film Ponyo continued its massive sales run, bolstered by the huge numbers of mainstream commoners who adore Studi Ghibli’s films.
The next spot goes to an otaku-only title, Vol. 2 of the Pizza Hut-loving Warring States action series Sengoku Basara, which pulled in a respectable 7,642 units in its first week on sale.
The DVD boxset of Tekkaman Blade (a classic 1992 TV series) managed to climb to the #3 spot, despite costing around $300, certainly an impressive feat.
The most obvious observation to be made from the rest of the list is the popularity of the various re-released Gundam movies, all as part of the classic mecha series’ 30th Anniversary celebrations, heralded by the giant 1/1 scale Gundam statue.
Fan-favorite Char’s Counterattack, regarded by some to be among the, if not the, best mecha films of all time, being the most popular amongst these is obvious, although the ranking of the 3 First Gundam compilation movies might be odd…
The extraordinarily sharp falloff of anime DVD sales after the first week or so of sales is well displayed by the placements of the popular Haruhi-chan DVD 3 (released 07/31) coming in at #14 and the best selling all-time TV anime release K-ON! Vol. 1 (released 07/29) at the #20 spot.

No, Norio(Char) Wakamoto is God
there was a lupin vs det conan?? id buy that!!
Haruhi vol3? Endless 8 crap sold this good? I just lost my last bit of hope for mankind.
Miyazaki is overrated if you ask me.
You could say the same about Disney..because it's really blown out of proportions long time ago...
But Ponyo was the first thing from Miyazaki that I didn't like. Seemed more like he made that for money, nothing else.
+1
Ponyo = Disney + Studio Ghibli = definition of overrated
where's Shinkai Makoto??
must see this ponyo
SKIP BEAT wa doku da ?!?!?!?
Classic will always remain classic, nothing beat Amuro and Char combi
"and the best selling all-time TV anime release K-ON! Vol. 1 (released 07/29) at the #20 spot."
18 = 20 ?
Thanks - I must've been tired when I made that error...
Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack
Nothing else matters on this list, for Char has just headshotted it in zero gravity with a lazar cannon
I thought the headshot was in 0079
wut?
Speaking of Ponyo, I've noticed a very heavy Ponyo ad campaign where I live. It's kinda cool really.
when I went to the theater this last weekend the walls were covered with Ponyo posters...
any theories on why tekkaman blade made such a huge comeback all of a sudden?
Much the same reason why many titles on DVD ranking charts do: they appeal to the masses. Tekkaman is a classic Tatsunoko franchise with more weight to throw around in Japan than most anywhere else. Granted dropping $300 doesn't constitute a general consumer purchase, I think it appears for the same reason Totoro or Char's Counterattack do. It's a popular, vintage title that's recently been brushed off.
I'd also like to point out the elephant in the room with Madagascar 2. Please, Japanese families, stop.
In regarding Tekkaman Blade, I think with joined Super Robot War game series actually help introduce the series to the younger generation otaku.
The hugely edited and dubbed English (or should I say Americanised?) version "Technoman" or whatever it was called sucked...it just failed to deliver what the original has the offer. Tekkaman Blade was epic as Blade/D-boy was one of very few true "tragic hero" that's ever been seen on anime who basically lost almost EVERYTHING he cherished to the alien invaders.
Seriously if anyone watch the crappy English version and got put off by it, go find the Japanese version with sub to watch.
It's worth it to buy Tekkaman Blade on DVD. Media Blasters did a great job on it and you can probably get it all for $60 (49 episodes plus those three short five minute OVAs they did).
but why tekkaman and why now? i doubt the show was this popular even back then?
BASARA!
OYAKATA-SAMAAAA!!!!
Fujimoto is moe.
damn..
I have not seen any from the list except haruhi-chan
Miyazaki is god!!!!!
yughghcfhxgf
No, Reiji Matsumoto is GOD.
Yagami Raito IS God. 'Nuff said.
+1
For Great Justice!! FUCK YEAH!!
I promise you people. Gundam Seed movie will surpass "Char's Counterattack" movie's epicness! Just wait for it. :D
you fucking retard.
well that's the best thing about Gundam's classic movies, even if you re-enhance it, they only get better than before.
like how it series "surpass" 0079? don't make me laugh.
anyway, let's just wait for the seed movie. any comment before that is being biased
seed sucks
seed was the crappiest gundam series ever
wing+00 ftw
zeta!
Wing and 00??? Are you fucking kidding me? 00 is bad but not horrible but Wing is an absolute abomination!!! Seed is better by far!!!
Seed is shit. Go watch your emo screaming.
SEED was not TOO bad (unlike seed destiny which was utter crap) but no way in hell can it beat 00 or Zeta. 0083 ftw!!
One does not care to acknowledge the mistakes of one's youth...
That was win xD
I'm surprised and happy to see F91 on the charts. I still think they should turn that into a series like they were supposed to.
me too
The otakus are moving on to blue-ray now....there needs to be a blue-ray chart for comparison.
Lol, I was half-expecting to see the Suzumiya Haruhi Season 2 "Endless Summer" series up there on the list. If it was up there then I would've laughed my ass off.
That hasn't been released yet. ^^
Apparently the japanese "like to move it, move it!"
And Tekkanman Blade brings back memories of watching it as Teknoman in english.
Why is Madagascar 2 up there?
The Oricon charts are as objective as they come. Based strictly on sales figures (gathered in their own unique way) and the general definition of animation. This allows American animtion like Ratatouille to occupy the charts. Simply put, Oricon details animation sold in Japan. Not just Japanese animation.
Japan likes Madagascar? cool
