American ISP giant AT&T has incited a storm of criticism for blocking parts of Futaba Channel clone 4chan, with users launching a hateful campaign against the company’s “censorship”, even as it appears that the move was a technical measure taken in relation to sustained DDoS attacks against the site.
Users of 4chan’s notorious /b/ boards began reporting connection issues to the img.4chan.org server which powers that particular board, though initially this was restricted to certain areas of the AT&T network. Soon the blocks spread, and AT&T customer service supposedly confirmed the block was in place.
Apparently, AT&T’s rationale for blocking the server in question is mitigating the effects of a DDoS attack against it. Certainly, from an ISP’s perspective much of 4chan is a frequent target for such attacks (due to the nature of the userbase), and also serves to originate them; the principal cause of downtime for 4chan also appears to be attacks on it.
This discussion explains matters:
There has been alot of customers on our network who were complaining about ACK scan reports coming from 207.126.64.181.
We had no choice but to block that single IP until the attacks let up. It was a decision I made with the gentleman that owns the colo facility currently hosts 4chan.
There was no other way around it. I’m sure AT&T is probably blocking it for the same reason. 4chan has been under attack for over 3 weeks, the attacks filling up an entire GigE.
If you want to blame anyone, blame the script kiddies who pull this kind of stunt.

Whilst blocking sections of a network in order to eliminate or isolate such attacks is standard practice, desperate 4channers have immediately attempted to curry sympathy by proclaiming the issue one of free speech versus evil corporate censorship.
One of the main preoccupations of most /b/ denizens, perhaps second only to posting random Photoshops or child pornography, is attempting to hack or deface sites which the groupthink of the moment deems objectionable.
Already the board and various external sites (for the sake of those blocked) are alive with talk of how best to crush AT&T’s network or customer service infrastructure in an effort to force the company to reinstate access to the site; much talk also centres on waging a terror campaign against the CEO and top executives of AT&T, who are now unfortunate enough to be having their personal details widely circulated online.
Whether this is an act of censorship based on the content of the server (which would indeed be highly reprehensible), or a transient effort to control the headache for the company’s network infrastructure which /b/ must at times represent is not completely clear, but it seems most likely to be the latter.
In either case, the hysterical response of 4chan users and their immediate resort to tactics of vandalism and intimidation hardly elicit great sympathy…

Now if only all of 4chan would be deleted and moot would get shot to death, the world would be a better place.
come on ! 4 chan become a better place if /b/ die... and AT&T only banned /b/ and /r9k/... the other boards don/t be affected and work very good , and is a better place without /b/ and their fuckin image flood...
what else can come up from the "anus of the internet"?
Banning for the lulz
/b/ loses the right to freedom of speech when they use it as a network for organizing illegal activities.
Some of them are terrorists. Seriously. Not the bombing or jihad kind of terrorist, but what better word can you describe what they do when they attack people and organizations?
Terrorism:
1. the use of violence and threats to intimidate or coerce, esp. for political purposes.
2. the state of fear and submission produced by terrorism or terrorization.
3. a terroristic method of governing or of resisting a government.
Just because some people have killed with a pen, should we ban pens? It's an extremely low percentage of 4chan users that actually KNOW how to do anything of the sort (scripts, DDoS, etc...), and not even all of them do it.
Calling some of their actions 'terrorism' fits with it's defition (note: 'especially' for political purposes, not 'only' as some may think), but that doesn't match 1% of /b/ users. And the fact all of 4chan is blocked by AT&T and not only /b/ makes it even more meaningless. It's normal for people to be outraged by this.
I guess it does work with the second definition, but again, it's not everyone. A lot of talking but nothing is done on that board, even when it comes to simply intimidation. Like someone said earlier, it often doesn't last even a week, sometimes it's a question of minutes. AT&T's personal information has been found and published because of the ban, and not the opposite; if they had done nothing, nothing would have happened.
If people always accepted what is done to them, then there would never have been progress in society. So how people are throwing fits for such an unjustified ban isn't necessarily bad. That's where the third definition comes in; back in dictatorship, people fighting against it were terrorists, yet by today's standards they would be considered heroes, no? Don't always link terrorism with bad, it can be wrong. This is simply more than a ban related to DDoS attacks, but that won't be revealed, obviously. Governments and such act in the shadows and render public the strict minimum that won't betray them to the general audience; more and more internet companies will start blocking 4chan if nothing is done, and the media will only help that (it will brainwash people into thinking 4chan in GENERAL, as they don't talk about a 'random' section of the site, will be actual terrorists, like we could have seen the past years with Fox News). What can be seen as small now might become huge if nothing is done, especially as more and more companies will keep track of every action the computers do in the next years.
This might seem paranoid, but it's better to expect something than to be completely surprised. I don't think it's far-fetched either, for the USA.
Then again, from the official's point of view they are doing the same thing; tired of letting script-kiddies fuck everything up.
There's no 'good side' in this story, and since I am entirely unaffected by this ban I can't speak for the user's side. I don't even go to 4chan in general anymore, only to /w/ or rs, but I'd be displeased too.
wall of text:
1. the post above
IT ARE FACT
yeah except i think the DDOS attacks are a much needed measure to combat the inundation of summer faggotry cancer that is killing /b/ in the first place. keep the board down until the cancer forgets about the place. then let up, old fags come back, ????, PROFIT!!!
/b/ is already dead. Old fags have left for better places.
Most people don't know the difference between a real hacker and a script kiddie, so they assume all script kiddies are hackers.
Script kiddies are lame losers who don't know how to hack, so they download programs that does these things and then claim themselves as hackers.
The block was so those script kiddies will stop their shitty attacks. I don't blame AT&T. They had to do what they had to do.
Retards at AT&T should have blocked 4chan as a whole, because new every ddos attack is focused on .zip. Fucking retards
4chan was blocked because AnonTalks DDoS was raping AT&T's servers.
The block has also now been lifted.
Oh well!
I wouldn't mind having that site blocked from all ISPs. It started sucking ass a few years ago and I haven't looked back; now it's just getting annoying with all these kids thinking they're so hip for using chan lingo outside the side.
I got that often. I gets less annoying when you show them absolutely no empathy and think of them as that yipping chihuahua.
marble cake also the game
rage.
Just block /b/ no one posts CP on /a/
I am happy to see how little support /b/ gets from here.
"Futaba Channel clone 4chan..."
QFT..
LOL
Fuck those annoying ISPs.
Weather its banning sites or those stupid ilegal downloads warning I like my ISP to just shut up and provide me with internet.
Fortunately thats exactly what my ISP does, its one of the good ones.
And once again, it NEVER fails with the incessant lying, as lying is a way of life for these hacker creeps. I salute AT&T for blocking viruses, trojans and nasty spider scripts, as that is what the REAL truth is as to WHY AT&T has flashed the middle finger [blocked] to 4 Chan. Why should AT&T waste time and energy in dealing with viruses, trojans and uncontrollable script programs emanating from the 4 Chan site?
I don't condone censorship and I certainly don't condone lies "in the name of lulz". The only thing 4 Chan has proven again and again, is that they are infantile and violent. A bunch of two year olds who go on tirades. And just like an out of control two year old, they need some REAL hard slaps from the school of hard knocks.
Any consequences or denial of internet access to AT&T customers due to NAZI actions emanating from 4 Chan [or any other hacker creeps for that matter], I pray that they are caught, rounded up, prosecuted beyond the extent of the law, thrown in a windowless cell and locked up forever until the day they die.
I commend AT&T for taking the step forward and I sincerely hope that other ISP'S follow suit ASAP. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. Hackers cause destruction, chaos, waste everyones time and energy. Normal people on the net are SICK AND TIRED of these two year old tantrum antics that 4 Chan displays on a daily basis. These hacker creeps really and truly need to GROW THE F*** UP.
lol 'violent'.
AT&T: I accidentally by 0, is that dangerous?
4chan: FFFUUUUUUUUU
You can't 'crush' AT&T's customer service infrastructure because there is none. Their customer service is absolutely terrible. Take it from someone with both an iPhone and AT&T internet. They installed it, it didn't work, and it took them two weeks to get someone out for a five minute job.
Then come to find out that hooking it in to our linksys router for wifi doesn't work. I call their customer service only to be told, "That's weird, it should work." Turns out you have to use THEIR router.
Now couple that with the fact that I barely get a phone signal in my own house, despite the fact that their's an AT&T building about a mile away, and you can see why I don't like AT&T.
Honestly? I hope 4chan destroys them. I almost never root for them when it comes to stuff like this, but somewhere in the back of my mind is a glimmer of hope that 4chan brings AT&T to their knees, regardless of why.
WTF is a "Colo Facility" ?
AT&T:We did it for the lulz...
The only reason I even go to 4chan is because of the Yuri, Rapidshares, Technology, Weapons, and now Ecchi.
Personally, /b/ is overrated anyway.
BTW, nice Bugs Bunny headset she's wearing. I didn't even realize Japan's into Looney Tunes.
Like it matters, make it illegal to visit the site.
Is nothing but weebo's and pedophiles in between the 10-14 year olds...
...I'm just going to buy a dog now. brb
AT&T's just getting some soup.
/b/ is a waste of fucking space. Wait, let me re-phrase that. /b/ post-2004 is a fucking waste of space. /jp/ is the only board worth anything on the whole damn site.
THERE IS NOT ENOUGH DESU!
Well I agree with AT&T is evil, but 4chan being blocked is a victory to mankind, then again they will probably plague themselves all over the net more so without 4chan to post meaningless crap.
Damn you AT&T you just destroyed the internet.
Who cares, /b/ is a shit hole, I'd be pissed if AT&T was trying to censor it since it makes them look like a bunch of backwards idiots, but that's not the case.
Omoshire hanashi niichan.
*yawn*
This isn't even worth popcorn.
Don't you mean omoshiroi? And that sentence needs particles ...
噺わ面白いよ,兄さん.
Correction fail. 'wa' when used as a particle is written using hiragana for 'ha' (は).
Now watch someone come along and correct me...
It doesn't, really. It's like the difference between writing "cool story bro" and "that story was cool, bro".
Sugoi monogatari, aniki.
*continue fapping*
Way to be unconventional, faggot.
Artefact haet 4chon?
Yes he does.
:slaps head: Picking a fight against 4ch is a bad baaaad idea. Might as well pick a fight against North Korea or something. Hell, it's probably SAFER to pick a fight against NK than 4chan in certain levels.
4chan is overrated. raiding gaiaonline is one thing, but fighting against someone with the funds to fight back is something else.
yeah, a "bad idea" indeed, tell that to the church of scientology... oops, the fuckers' still strong and healthy; apparently the opinions of nerdy acne-ridden dipsticks on guy fawkes masks yapping strong on the internet matters less than a fart irl
face it, "internet hate machine": outside of the web YOU ARE IRRELEVANT
You obviously haven't heard of what's happening to the CoS in France. :)
Even though /b/ is full of trash it's existence is necessary.
If /b/ is inaccessible then the rest of the internet gets trashier. /b/ keeps most of the trash quarantined from the rest of the internet. That is why /b/ must exist.
"the CEO and top executives of AT&T, who are now unfortunate enough to be having their personal details widely circulated online."
Yeah, that sounds like /b/. Explanations are futile - they're probably yelling "these are the actual facts" at each other already. Their coordinated web army maneuvers seem to run on apparent and instinctive motives.
God have mercy on you AT&T, for making eye contact with that psychotic hobo. Maybe it was necessary from an ISP perspective, but most folk just look the other way when passing the alley with the maniacal laughing.
This
The only thing that keeps the rest of the net safe is anon's complete inability to tell friend from foe, act rationally, or organize anything that takes longer than a week to accomplish.
