Sales expectations for the latest IdolMaster title, IdolMaster: Dearly Stars for the DS, were relatively restrained, but with revelation that one of the main characters is actually a crossdessing shota idol its popularity has surged, with pre-orders on NicoNico Douga more than doubling overnight.
Akizuki Ryo, cousin of Ritsuko from the original, was featured in a trailer for the game on Nico, and the translated version from the trailer goes something like this:
“Oh no! I need to be quick! If Ai-chan and Eri-chan see me like this, they’ll know I’m a boy!”
“Must change quickly! Okay. Just the make up left…”
“*Moan* My pads are a bit off!”
The effects were immediate – observers noted that 160 preorders followed immediately on the heels of the trailer, and a further 237 came the day after. Preorders went from 140, to 800 where they stand now, and continue to rise.
In absolute terms the numbers may not seem huge, but it has to be remembered that the trend is likely to be repeated through other sites, and that the sales figures for such a title are not necessarily huge to begin with.
The game goes on sale in a few months, and pre-orders are open.
Just what this says about the IdolMaster fan demographic, or for that matter Nico, is not clear…
