As part of the “dagger knife” ban instigated after the Akiba stabbing spree, a Japanese prefecture has banned knives used to prepare oysters “for being too pointy.”
The knives in question are widely used by fishermen and chefs in the preparation of oysters. Since the law bans “double edged blades over 5.5cm long” and “blades with a very sharp point,” police have decided that the knives are illegal and must be banned.
In an exemplary use of police resources, they confiscated 10 of the blades from local merchants whilst informing them of the new rules.
However, they generously offer to inspect the blades of actual tradesmen to see if they are legal, though just what criteria it is they use to determine whether the blade is “too pointy” is anyone’s guess, and they resort to excusing their vagueness by saying it is “case-by-case”.
Those convicted of possessing such a dangerous blade can face up to a three year prison sentence.
There do not appear to have been any cases of rogue oyster chefs rampaging about Iwate, so the only explanation is perhaps that police have nothing better to do.

Expect a case-by-case ban on screwdrivers next…

Fucking japanese pigs. Never do a day of real policework (eg chasing down that guy they let WALK PAST HIM ON THEIR WAY UP THE STAIRS TO ARREST HIM FOR MURDER- oh wait, he's not important since he only killed a foreigner), instead just pick on the easy targets. I remember watching a dozen of them shaking down some otaku in Akiba last summer, went on for a good hour with them trying to bully him the whole time for looking 'suspicious' (as if every otaku in akiba doesn't look shifty).
Wow, now banning these small knives which are needed for the seafood business in Iwate. Is the Japanese police not skipping some steps in the process; shouldn't the Parliament and the Government make a bill for this prohibition since this affects all the fishermen, chefcooks etc. in the prefecture in their practice of their professions/jobs. The fishermen and cooks should go to the judge and let the judge see whether it's illegal or not. And what about the butcher knifes?
Everything could be used as a weapon, e.g. a chair, a hammer, an axe, a saw, a baseball bat, a golf club etc.. Ban these too?
You hit the nail on the head. This is a knee-jerk reaction and blaming the implement when they should be blaming the person who did this crime or, at least, what DROVE him to this crime.
Next they ban walking sticks because you can club someone to death with it. The old people sure will like that...
Yet one more case of Japan recognizing a serious social issue and FREAKING THE FUCK OUT until they are no longer able to make rational decisions.
Japan, CALM THE FUCK DOWN. Seriously.
I'm in America and own a gun (so much of the land here is rural we need it as a tool for dealing with wildlife, and because police response time is measured in hours.) so I find this REALLY hilarious.
Here is something from Britain you should all laugh at.

Knife bans solve nothing. People in prison still make shivs. I can understand gun bans, though I'm glad it's not banned in the states but knife bans are RETARDED!
Gun bans only take the guns out of the hands of the people that follow the laws so they don't really work since criminals get their guns illegally in the first place, i.e. black market.
Sure, but most people get killed by legally bought weaponry...
But not by the owner of the legally bought weaponry. Its usually by the person who stole the legally bought weapon. Ted Bundy confessed before his execution that he admitted to raping/killing 30 women. There wasn't a gun in his rape kit, they were either strangled or stabbed with an ice pick.
Why not ban humans?
See in America, citizens have the right to bear arms.
yes the right to put bear arms on the wall
why does it have to be on the wall? i carry mine to work everyday.
The next thing you know, they'd be banning men from walking down the street because the 'weapons' they carrying are too 'dangerous' for the women...
[sarcasm/]AWW DAMNIT, NOW THAT KNIFES ARE GONE HOW AM I GONNA GO ON A MURDEROUS RAMPAGE?! I guess I'll just have to give up on that idea then and become a model citizen of society....*sigh*
Might I suggest a Barbed Wire Baseball Bat?
Or maybe a cricket bat with nails driven into it.
:P
i think a car will be the best option...3500 lbs of fast moving steel.
i see this as justified. there are specially made knives for these things that have rounded and dull edges
I don't see it as justified, because those rounded edge knives simply DO NOT WORK at well as these pointy knives, that's why chefs use them and even people doing seafood in their homes use them.
I can't wait to see what they do when someone's resourceful enough to do a stabbing with scissors. They'll be banning scissors next, god forbid they notice the guy that committed the akiba stabbings was fucked up in the head.
wow i met shanks become common in japan because of this
Youd think Japan police would had more important things to do than... you know... confiscating sharp objects that ARE supposed to be sharp and pointy
i first know this matter from Zan Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei 2nd ep...
never know this is for real...
why not ban banning instead so they can't ban anything anymore.
Amen to that
Police have nothing better to do => THIS!!
But I don't get it what's the point? you can murder using bananas if you really want to...
In USA you can buy legally something like this without problem:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ntXkuqZ2Fo4
Damnit! My plans foiled again...
dumb enough that i can't get a butterfly knife for fun.
Bans are everywhere now...
New trend?
Like my toothpick, those blade seem too dangerous, I'm glad they had been banned.
Holy shit. This is something that Britain should've done! It makes sense that after they ban guns, they should ban knives as well! That should decrease the number of stabbing cases to zero and turn Britain into the safest country in the world.
*awesome face*
Most retarded thing I've ever read. There isn't really anything you CAN'T use as a weapon. Criminals will just use something else.
Yup, let's take this pencil for example - want to see a magic trick?
Knives are critical tools for many outdoor working men. Knives are also critical for kitchen duties and other cases. In reality, although many may carry EDC knives and/or combat knives, murder can be done just as easily with a large sashimi blade, which is often more honed and edged than combat blades. Kitchen knives are often sharper due to their purposeful of fine (or unfine) cooking but have less durable metals. Combat knives (which law enforcement fear greatly) are made of often heavy durable steels but these are often less sharp in comparison to kitchenware.
So in conclusion,if someone was going to commit murder, theyd probably anything around, say something from the kitchen.
they'd probably "use" anything around.
'Any tool is a weapon if you hold it right.'
and.. why are they blaming the tools..
like someone said.. 'Why not ban humans?'

[/sarcasm]
Sweden is already banning the carrying of knives. It doesn't work.
*awesome face*
It would seem as though Japan is becoming what is probably my biggest fear ever.
A Utopian society.
Now I'm not saying it's great over there or anything, quite the opposite in fact. By trying to force peace in the public you end up taking away individual rights...
Thats a 'dystopia.' Oppression of rights is only the controllers' idea of 'utopia'.
For some reasons, it makes me really hungry.
Something in that top image has been whited out...
Curious isn't it.
Oh you...
Holy wow what couldve been there!?! Indeed it is very curious...

Good thing I saw this comment pile, or I'd still be puzzling as to why the filename is "oyster-shelling-bishoujo-uncensored.jpg"?
I was like... what on earth would they have originally censored in this? question answered.
Though it would have been more clever to have censored her shelling tool, given the article content.
who is she? and my god, your talent for cover pictures must be legendary on these nets of inter.
Thanks, I will use this version.
Governments seem to ban alot of shit just for teh lulz these days.
Here is a comparison with USA who still has guns and Japan who bans large blades.
Past:
The American Old West: main weapons - guns
Feudal Japan: main weapons - katanas
Present:
United States of America: main weapons - guns and missiles
Japan: main weapons - ????
Future:
Holy Britannian Empire: main weapons - Knightmare Frames
United States of Japan: main weapons - Zero
More like
Present:
United States of America: main weapons – guns, tanks and missiles
Japan: main weapons – RX-78-2 "Gundam"
Joke Slayer man.
Right now RX-78-2 can't destroy anything, it just sits there, has pretty lights, smokes, and nods. It can't do any harm, so it's not a weapon.
effects of the internets are affecting even the politicians... they also love lulz!!
It helps some of the more illogical among the masses feel safer at night.
they avoiding "NICE BOAT" at all cost!
