The masculine half of the regular monthly character rankings poll results from the August issue of Newtype have become available along with the female version, with Kyon returning to the #1 spot with other otaku icons Lelouch and Shinji close behind.

Newtype August 2009 Male Character Rankings

1. Kyon (The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya)

2. Lelouch Lamperouge (Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion)

3. Shinji Ikari (Neon Genesis Evangelion)

4. Edward Elric (Fullmetal Alchemist)

5. Kira Yamato (Gundam SEED)

6. Kaworu Nagisa (Neon Genesis Evangelion)

7. Gintoki Sakata (Gin Tama)

8. Roy Mustang (Fullmetal Alchemist)

9. Setsuna F. Seiei (Gundam 00)

10. Date Masamune (Sengoku Basara)

Sarcastic protagonist Kyon moving up the rankings some spots is of course unsurprising given that the second series has fully begun. Lelouch and Edward have both remained consistently popular characters for quite some time now, so their high placements are also typical.

Shinji does not normally come up this high onto these sort of character rankings, much unlike his two female co-stars that have been making frequent visits to these lists for well over a decade now, but the new Evangelion movie has propelled him and Kaworu to the the #3 and #6 spots, respectively.

If you’re wondering about Kira’s high ranking, even higher than his more recent Gundam 00 counterpart Setsuna, the sight of the main Gundam SEED characters is actually not surprising as Kira and Lacus have both remained consistently popular for some years now.
