Nintendo may have won some notable successes in its war on modchips, or “majikon”, and related devices, but it seems in some places in Japan they are easier to get than ever, all thanks to the ubiquitous (and perhaps notorious) Japanese vending machine.
Some are sold out…
The usual favourites are those for use with handheld devices.
“(These are not) Cigarettes”
Situated in Osaka’s Nipponbashi shopping district, the vending machines compete with the many shady shops and stalls selling this sort of merchandise.
The vending machine operators brazenly tout their services: “Try selling your wares in a vending machine! If it can fit in a cigarette box, anything goes! (Of course we can’t handle illegal goods!)”
It looks as if Nintendo faces an uphill struggle…

I love it, way to go Nintendo haha better luck next time. Seriously while I do play games and try to buy legally (imports are to expensive most of the time) I despise heavy handed tactics.
I see a DSTT. That's my baby. Let me tell you, ever since I found out that you can play Visual Novels on a ds with one of these babys, I never went back.
i must say i second that, TTDS i have never ever had issues with... R4 on the other hand... fat load of MEH.

I finished playing Fate/Stay Night on that and is now replaying on PC to see the CGs and effects.
I was going to buy an R4 the currently most popular of those but now the DSTT looks like a much better option.

Wow! Convenient! I'm in the US, and yesterday bought a used Phat DS for US$60.00 at a local shop. I don't care about games, but want to do homebrew, and now I need something like this (R4).
But the price in the vending machine -- 8000 yen is (currently) US$83.33 - more than I paid for the DS.
Also, I see two models in the machine. I believe the company which made the R4 issued firmware for their newest model which will brick your DS if you don't have a genuine R4 (there are knock-off companies making them now). This was an attempt to prevent the clone-makers from stealing their profits.
How do you tell which (if either) of the two shown in the vending machine is the "real deal"?
I'd take this. I bought my two M3s when they were still a fairly new product and pain some 50 AUD for each including shipping (bought it from and Australian shop). The same items were only available a year later in local stores, and for 3x-4x the price.
Nintendo must realize this policy is a step in the wrong direction. Region locks and banning hardware for use with homebrew software are both against freedom of information and that will not please the gamers. I'm a Nintendo fan or a long time, but this is plain wrong. There's nowhere to shift focus to instead, though.
Try to remember that the R4 is illegal there compared to totally OK here in the US... R4s go for 40$ here.

Homebrew is pretty fun, if you have the time to get into it. (I too got an R4, but it was several years ago, I spent about 60$ on it, got it online)
As far as I know, it hasn't been touched here in the USA. The "usual" rules still apply to it though... Using it with your DS void's the DS's warranty (oh god no. Just don't tell them and they'll never find out) and having digital copies of roms is still illegal. I wouldn't be too worried about it. I've sent in a flashed DS before, to get it replaced... they actually accepted it.
theyll never know you cracked open your ds and inserted a microchip? they found out pretty fast when i turned in my 360 that i opened it. i didnt even mod it, i just opened it and even replaced the void sticker.

DSTT (even if they are fake) can be had for less than 10$ on the international market.
