Top eroge maker Nitroplus has announced it will be making its properties available in English in partner with English language localiser JAST, in a move which is likely to finally put an end to the notion that English language localisations consist chiefly of B-rank titles.
JAST and J-List president Peter Payne announced the venture thusly:
“As the leading producer of adult ‘dating sim’ games and visual novels in English, JAST USA is excited to take the bold step of forming this partnership, devoted to the release of high quality, English language versions of Nitroplus products.”
Nitroplus have opened an English language site, which will be carrying details of their releases.
Nitroplus are a highly respected eroge maker, with a long history of acclaimed releases, starting with Phantom of Inferno in 2000, and represent one of the most significant makers of visual novels to commit to a program of English language releases.
Their most recent title, Sumaga, has attracted much acclaim for its story and spectacular artwork; they also jointly produced the Blassreiter anime with Gonzo…
Their first English release is set to be Zanma Taisei Demonbane.
JAST themselves have long been releasing digitally and physically distributed English language eroge, with their substantial catalogue available through a variety of retailers, with digital downloads available from J-List. Their localisations have thus far always been of a high standard.
With the increasing credibility of English language visual novel releases, and the development of the international market for such games, it seems likely that even more quality titles await…

alright now I hope some other company follow like navel so I can play shuffle!.
This is good news indeed.
This is so awesome. I'm highly interested in Demonbane and Tre Donne Crudeli.
Now look you xenophobic bastards of eroge, this is the right course of actions you should've taken. Not only is it the right choice but it's also a smart one. Nitro+ shows that they truly are top-notch eroge producers.
Not to alienate users but to cooperate and stand together against a common enemy - people who want to restrict eroge work or "culture". To capitalize market and take benefits from it, make everyone happy. That's how it should be done.
Everyone here says that JAST's translations are decent, but aren't they mostly a distribution company?
I've only ever seen a handful of games directly attributed to them...
They are a localisation company. Most credit of course goes to the actual makers.
Now this is quite epic. I'm glad that not all eroge makers harbour a hatred for the west because of the recent ban. Hopefully this can be seen as a sign of goodwill and will lead to other companies to consider foreign sales as a viable source of income. That being said, the foreign sales of Nitroplus' english titles will be vital. If the sales aren't up to spec, then that is a good indication to other companies that foreign sales aren't worth the effort. So please, oh god please don't pirate the english releases when they come out. I know it's tempting but we have to look at the bigger picture here.
I'm glad this didn't happen earlier.
I wouldn't have the motivation to learn Japanese otherwise.
But I'm happy for those who haven't. Galges are wonderful things to share.
I've only downloaded VN's so far and never bought one, but im gonna start now, that's how fuckin epic this is.
Even though most of the official english translated eroge I've played have had decent translations, it still worries me whenever I hear that another one is being translated. I'm always afraid that eroge will start being translated like official english released hentai anime (changing the script during sex scenes to sound like generic american porn).
Since visual novels actually have well developed plots I would hope this is unlikely...
Who even plays plot-centered eroges for porn? If you wade through hours of story just to see five or so images and a scene that lasts 5-15 minutes, then you should try something else.
I play them for the plot AND the porn.
Chaos;Head English. can't wait for that if ever it is being translated. and I sure hope prices for EN localization is good and not just like the price that in Japan. hehe. :)
Hell yea! I still don't know what the fuzz about the sex stuff is all about (I only played 2 VN and both of them had less then 5% sex and they where simply bad from the "fap" perspective), but as long as they keep the beautiful CG and interesting stories I am all for it... as long as they don't fuck up on the translation department... like swapping "-sama" for Mr. or "-sensei" for teacher ¬¬
I mean, I am aware appealing to broad audience is a good thing, but quick translation notes are MUCH better then butchering the japanese subtleties.
A lot of official english released eroge I've played had words like "-sama" and "-sensei" swapped out, though some kept it. The ones that remove it are usually handled better than english dubbed anime. They don't say "Teacher X", they say it the way a normal american would, "Mr./Miss/Mrs. X". They don't translate "X-onii/onee-chan" into "big brother/sister X" either, they just use the person's name.
I do agree that they should just leave them in and include translation notes. I really doubt that any one that buys these won't already be familiar with these words. I think that trying to make eroge appeal to a broader audience when it's released in english is a stupid move because the only people that will ever be interested in eroge are otaku and taking out honorifics won't change that.
Other than that the stories seem to be accurately translated so nothing major is lost. The cg are uncensored so it's better than the original version in that regard. Companies have learned not to remove any cg since the ones that have tried that before had come under heavy criticism and their games didn't sell well. IIRC the only times that cg was removed before was for underage characters. Now they just say that the person is at least 18, though if you know japanese numbers then you can tell their real age if they say it out loud (or you can look online for their real age).
Take that, UNICEF, equality now.
This is great news!
While I welcome their decision to finally localize some Nitro+ games...JAST's productions hasn't always been top of the line(not that we have any choices here)...I remembered buying Thunder Warrior Raidy from them a while back. The game itself was really small but there was a buttload of advertisements for their other games. The Japanese counterpart looked better in comparison, even with the damned mosaics. It must be some weird, lossy compression format that they used which degraded the graphics quality. Hopefully they will work on that department. Otherwise, the translation itself is pretty faithful for the most part. And no dub so that's good. Wouldn't mind blowing some cash on games like 塵骸魔京 or 斬魔大聖デモンベイン.
Lets see those feminazis try to ban this. Americans aren't spineless pushovers like those elevens are.
Out of all the bad news we had with the feminazi bitches, we just got some great news. Im so happy.
This is the best damn news ever!
BONER HAS BEEN ACTIVATED..
Preparing launch sequence..
*sits back and watches as major fail ensues*
Localization is all well and good, but there are some things that just cannot be fully translated. Literature is one of them (of course this probably means nothing to those seeking the ero alone).
訳文尊重主義 vs 原文尊重主義
The fact of the matter is that while translations break down language barriers between 'simple fans', they also create ideological barriers between 'elite otaku' (in this case, especially those that value galge as literature).
The word translation is very deceiving in literature because technically the end product will be an 'English VERSION'. (For those of you that have seen Japanese otaku reaction to such things as the Chinese 'Sader' figurine or the live action dragon ball movie... it is not very difficult to extrapolate such reaction to localized galge.
eg: such comments as, 'they butchered our galge literature', 'oh so horrible, my lovely ____-chan, what have they done to you', 'this was comedy game?!?! wwww' style responses popping up in 2chan threads and nikoniko douga videos anyone?)
オタクだって主張するぐらいなら、エロゲ文学のために日本語を勉強するんだな┐(´д`)┌ヤレヤレ
Was your post translated? It's not very coherent.
Damn right I study Japanese to read eroge, and only eroge for that matter (well, light novels too I guess). That's also why I can read but I can't write since I never bothered with the writing part. Honestly, I don't see any purpose in learning all of it since it wouldn't really be of any practical use. First of all, there aren't that many native japanese people around me that can't talk in english anyway, and second, I have no intention of going to Japan to live. I'll probably get persecuted for being gaijin anyway (although I might go visit though).
This is pretty cool, actually.
looks like demonbane will be an epic too!
Saya no Uta please.
Is there any possibility Saya no Uta is even gonna get an anime? I don't understand why they haven't, it is one of the most popular Nitro games, right?
i cant wait to purchase a disk copy of saya no uta =Q;
with nitroplus, who needs "xenophobic" publishers.. hope there'd be more that would try to export their visual novel games.
We'll soon hear UNICEF and feminist groups knocking on Nitro+ and JAST's doors
yes we will, metatron....and then we'll hear their yelps as they're booted from the premises for trespassing. ;)
UNICEF and Feminists Groups cannot fight the US Constitution(nor the current LIVE PORN INDUSTRY which gives a better example/argument of "female exploitation and degradation" then their so-called outcry over eroge games and the like).
This is the 2nd greatest birthday present I have ever received....
OH HELL YEAH! The happiest 4th of July to me.......hmmmmmmm what about the branch company 'Nitro+CHiRAL, will they participate as well?
now we just need a localization of RAPELAY and my life will be complete.
I love you, Petey..
Here i came, Al Azif...
Puck You, Feminist and Unicef!!!!
Sweet, finally can see more commercial eroge in other languages.
cool story bro
Thank christ!!! Something to be thankful for! Thank you Nitroplus! Not like the companies that are blocking access for the rest of the world...
Though the majority of Jast USA titles seems to be 'Do you like bunnies 1+2+3' I'm just happy they're collaborating with a nice big company!!
So excited!
Events like this reminds me that there are still sensible people out there.
HOLY FUCKCOCKS BATMAN! I AM INCOHERENTLY EXCITED!
A dream comes true x333 ♥
At least some companies in japan aren't complete idiots...
The Japanese otaku must be mad at this. Hahahaha.
DON'T RELEASE IN THE WEST, IT WILL MAKE MORE FEMINISTS PROTEST!! AND SINCE WE DON'T FIGHT BACK, WE JUST BLAME THE FOREIGNERS FOR THEIR PRESSURE!!
FUCKING TRAITORS!
Hahahah.
And since they won't do anything either, we're screwed.
Fuck yes Nitro+. This is the best news since Ryukishi07 said that fan-translations of his stuff have his full support.
This is great news. Although Gekkou no Carnevale is strangely missing. I know it wasn't as popular but still....Kyon...
Saya no Uta when????????
Also they can take english fan-translation, get it through editor and release it with it as official. Its not like they make money from translation, but from game itself. I think most translators would take it as compliment..
I don't know what is JAST's policies on Guro subjects but I am afraid a localization of 沙耶の唄 would likely to be contextually censored. A great game nonetheless.
Translators will probably want money, though
No, most translators would probably be very offended. They made that release for free, for the fans... and then some company takes it, edits it, and uses it to make money?
No, sounds like a terrible idea to me.
This would work if they payed the fan-translators for their work. After all, that patch was meant to work with the game, not without it.
Technically the fan translators have already "stolen" the work by violating the copyright though unauthorised translation.
AND distributing it...
