Final Fantasy VII is overrated, period. Take off your nostalgia goggles.
I loved VIII most, but Final Fantasy IX was probably the best.

IX?? Seriously?? It's the one I like the least, I think. Followed by VII, it was pretty but I found the plot too facepalm-inducing, and the fight gameplay was completely broken. Also, the card minigames are great if you get into them, but sadly for me I couldn't stand them. Either way, to each their own, a lot of factors are largely subjective.
And VII is very overrated, but it's still great. My favourites are probably V, VI, VII, and (gasp) XII.
