The thousand year old Chinese practice of foot binding may be long since abolished, but its grotesque legacy lives on in the few surviving ladies who were subjected to this crippling treatment.
Some of the last victims still live on, and the nature of the practice can be readily ascertained from the graphic photos below:
The excruciating practice involved binding the feet ever tighter in the girl’s youth, until the bones were broken and crushed into the desired shape. Such “shapely” feet were the subject of great aesthetic appreciation and were proudly displayed with the sort of fine footwear seen here.
Contrary to what might be thought, such crippled women could still be expected to work in the fields and retain relative mobility.
These ladies were born in the 1930s, and it can only be hoped that they were amongst the very last to be so afflicted…

I once watch on TV a young woman, a model if I remember well, that thought that this ancient fashion relly looks good and start to practice it.
Well like a thousand years ago a chinese emperor had a daughter or something whose feet were messed up or something. To make sure this wouldn't be something shameful for a princess he did some proganda or something to make small feet into something elegant. So of course everyone wanted to look elegant so foot binding became the way to go. I think I got the gist of the history, although I'm doing it from memory.

Hm. It appears to me that the ladies in the photos have had their feet "let out", that is, have long ago discarded the restraining bandages that made the shape and size of the feet fixed, and which will over time allow the feet to take on a more relaxed shape. As I recall, letting out is the norm for many of the survivors of foot binding left alive today.

Just about a relic of the past now. Thos women were featured on a documentary here in China on TV last year. There is only a half dozen of them left, and they all live together in the same village.

I fail to see how this can be perceived as hot or beautiful. Then, now or ever. How the bloody hell is deforming a human body a good thing? Almost as retarded as those african tribes that wear tightly placed neck rings to prolong their necks.
This has been said earlier, but this deformation of the body to conform to a society's standard of beauty was essentially no different than cosmetic surgery is today. The only difference lies in modern society's perception of the practice.
Women often feel pressured to deform their face, nose, lips, breasts, abdomen, etc. with -elective- surgery so that they can conform to what Western society views as "beautiful".
Every culture has different opinions on what the ideal female (and male as well) form should be. Occasionally these "ideals" involve deforming or decorating the body in unnatural ways that may seem grotesque or even cruel to outsiders.
A wiser man than I once said, "No man can ever truly understand any culture but his own."

Though the nerve endings are at the feet and affects most of the body system, I don't think it directly causes death. Perhaps arthiritis or other feet problem arises.
They died from infections due to their weakened immune system, and the torture they were being subjected to when they didn't comply to carry heavy weights around while walking on their bound feet.
